This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prayers of the Hours, known in the Coptic language as the Agpeya, are popular prayers used by the vast majority of the Christians of Egypt, the Copts. The Agpeya is in fact, Bible-centered prayers, composed for the most part of a selection of psalms from the Old Testament, and gospel readings from the New Testament, with some added hymns of praise and other prayers. The Agpeya prayers are usually recited by both individuals and families for prayers at home, as well as for communal prayers at Church as introductory prayers recited prior to Mass. The present book presents the "Bohairic-Coptic" text of the Agpeya. It is written according to the rites of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, Egypt, and follows the prayers and order of the contemporary Agpeya. It is presented in "Coptic-only" using the same text format used by contemporary liturgical books of the Coptic Orthodox Church. The text has been compiled from different sources, each of which based on extant and documented primary sources. It was further reviewed against a primary source, a 19th century Coptic-Arabic Agpeya manuscript hand-written by Pope Cyril V(1874-1920), one the eminent Fathers of the Coptic Orthodox Church, and a recognized authority of a high stature.

Book excerpt: Prayer is one of the important practices in the Christian faith, by which we inform God our faith, our thanksgiving, and our requests. Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed and has giving us the greatest prayer, "Our Father." In our Coptic Orthodox Church, the Agpeya is the prayer book of the hours in which the Church had set prayers for individuals, families, and congregants to be prayed at specific times of the day. The book includes all canonical hours' prayers including the Veil, as well as the Absolution of the Priests, and some personal prayers. Coptic text for some selected prayers and some of the hours' litanies has also been included. All Scripture readings are according to the NKJV while all other texts are what has been used in St. Mark's, Jersey City for many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the complete Book of the Psalms, a Contemporary Prayer Book of the Hours, called the Agpeya in the Coptic language, and a few select Doxologies. The text is presented in both English and the Bohairic dialect of the Coptic language, according to the traditions of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, Egypt. The Coptic language is in fact the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language. The English text presented is the equivalent available English text of the Coptic. The Prayer Book of the Hours, the Agpeya, is primarily based on selections of the Psalms, appropriate selections of the New Testament Gospel readings, and some hymns of praise. The presentation of the Agpeya Prayers accordingly refers to the psalms already included in the Book of the Psalms. The editor and scribe of the book, has strived to use scientific methods of enquiry to the maximum extent possible to come up with Coptic text. He used reliable sources based on available primary sources, and compared it directly with primary sources to obtain an accurate text. As ancient texts were written mostly without spacing between the words and without the aid of modern punctuation marks, the editor has attempted to present the Coptic text using punctuation marks, as used in American English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thought-provoking collection of magical texts from ancient Egypt shows the exotic rituals, esoteric healing practices, and incantatory and supernatural dimensions that flowered in early Christianity. These remarkable Christian magical texts include curses, spells of protection from "headless powers" and evil spirits, spells invoking thunderous powers, descriptions of fire baptism, and even recipes from a magical "cookbook." Virtually all the texts are by Coptic Christians, and they date from about the 1st-12th centuries of the common era, with the majority from late antiquity. By placing these rarely seen texts in historical context and discussing their significance, the authors explore the place of healing, prayer, miracles, and magic in the early Christian experience, and expand our understanding of Christianity and Gnosticism as a vital folk religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare and engaging encounter with Egyptian cloistresses Contemporary Coptic Nuns reveals a world rarely seen by outsiders--the world of nuns who worship and serve as part of the largest community of indigenous Christians in the Middle East. One of the few people unaffiliated with the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church to observe these women, Pieternella van Doorn-Harder offers a compelling portrait of the nuns who devote their lives to this conservative faith. Van Doorn-Harder traces the current vitality of the Coptic monastic tradition to a church-wide renaissance of the mid twentieth-century. She credits Coptic mother superiors with harnessing the revival's energy to usher in an era of expanded opportunity for Egyptian Christian women. At that time they transformed convents into centers of Coptic faith and culture and began providing pastoral, educational, and medicinal services to the community. In depicting the nuns' daily lives, van Doorn-Harder describes their work, their role in the Coptic resurgence, their influence on the Coptic laity, and their position in the larger Islamic society. In presenting their spiritual lives, she attests to the vigor of their prayer, fasting, and devotions as well as to their spiritual gifts, which include clairvoyance, intercession, and healing.

Book excerpt: 'In liturgical study, and especially in English liturgical study, the subject of the daily office has always been something of the poor relation', writes the author in his preface. This volume aims to do something to fill that gap. It begins with a detailed examination of the Jewish background and of the practice of daily prayer in the first three centuries of the Church, and goes on to trace the evolution of the divine office in both its monastic and secular forms in East and West down to the time of St. Benedict. Intended as a replacement for The Influence of the Synagogue upon the Divine Office by C. W. Dugmore (Alcuin Club Collection No. 45), it not only incorporates the results of recent research by continental scholars and others but also challenges traditional assumptions at a number of important points, offering a fresh interpretation of the evidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2008, the Coptic Orthodox Centre in Stevenage, UK organised a conference on Coptic Culture: Past, Present, and Future. The conference aimed to highlight the contributions and achievements of one of the most obscure periods of Egyptian history: the Coptic Period. The importance of this period lies in its valuable contributions to some of the most formative theological debates of Christianity. Strictly defined as a Late Antique culture, spanning only the third to the seventh centuries AD, the heritage of the Coptic Period still survives today in the artistic expression, liturgical services, and heritage of millions of Egyptian Christians who live in Egypt and abroad. This period's lasting contributions, however, remain underappreciated and many of its aspects remain unclear or unknown to the general public. For the first time, the conference at the Coptic Centre brought together specialists working on all aspects of Coptic culture, from its earliest phases to the present day. One of the aims of the conference was to highlight new research on Coptic art, writings, and archaeology. By bringing together specialists, academics and Coptic clergy, the conference fostered an active discussion of what defined Coptic identity in centuries past and what it means to be Coptic in contemporary culture, both in Egypt and abroad. It is important that we draw on, understand, and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of this period as we look to our past to inform our present and define our future. The conference drew scholars from Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Their papers were organised along 5 general thematic blocks that dealt with (1) The Egyptian roots of Coptic culture; (2) How do we know what we know: Archaeological Sites and Museum Collections; (3) Aspects of Early and Medieval Coptic Culture: Case Studies; (4) Current Trends in Coptic Studies; and (5) Coptic Culture Today and where it's heading. This volume contains their contributions.
