Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Salt abandoned his mastership at Eton in the 1880s to devote himself to causes including vegetarianism, socialism, animals' rights, conservation, and prison reform. He remained a literary critic of distinction, publishing in 1890 the initial version of Thoreau's Life. With the help of American friends, he revised the book and published it anew in 1896. This third version, never before published, gives us Salt's final reading of Thoreau based on important works published up to 1908, including Thoreau's complete Journal. Combining a concise narrative of Thoreau's life with a perceptive treatment of his ideas and writings, it stands as a penetrating study of Thoreau, stressing his distinctive individuality. Through analysis of the text and a concise biography, the editors illustrate Salt's growth as a scholar and his changing views on Thoreau and Thoreau's philosophy. The introduction details Salt's significant stylistic improvements to the 1908 edition as well as the inclusion of anecdotes and facts gathered from Samuel Arthur Jones, F. B. Sanborn, Ernest W. Vickers, Raymond Adams, Fred Hosmer, and Gandhi. This volume is made complete with Salt's updated bibliography and an index by the editors. It will appeal to scholars of Thoreau and to readers interested in Thoreau, American Transcendentalism, or American literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second supplement to DALB, the Dictionary of American Library Biography (1978), adds 77 notable, deceased members of the library and archival communities to the 302 entries in the main volume and the 51 entries in the first supplement (1990). The second supplement includes primarily those figures who died between 1987 and the end of the year 2000, though some 13 entries provide sketches for notable persons whose death dates are somewhat earlier and who were not included in earlier works. Among the entries are a number of African Americans, and nearly one-half of the entries are women. Some 80 contributors from the United States and Canada provided sketches, many based on original source material. This supplement follows the practice and format of the earlier volumes, though it allows presidents of the American Library Association to compete for inclusion with other nominations.

Book excerpt: Scott, the former head of cataloging with the U.S. Census Bureau, has devised truly useful, straightforward tables translating Library of Congress call numbers into Dewey Decimal class numbers and Dewey into LC. Aimed at both converting entire collections and the search for call numbers for individual records, this will prove to be an effective aid for catalogers. Starting with LC numbers in strict order, the Dewey equivalent is listed immediately to the right, followed by a brief, precise descriptor. This process is duplicated for the Dewey numbers. While not as inclusive or descriptive as the actual schedules, the coverage is comprehensive. If more precision is required, the citations will direct catalogers to appropriate areas of the actual schedules. Geographic and other standard extensions are included. This work should also be considered by reference departments for work with patrons familiar with one scheme but not the other.

Book excerpt: Class-tested and coherent, this textbook teaches classical and web information retrieval, including web search and the related areas of text classification and text clustering from basic concepts. It gives an up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the design and implementation of systems for gathering, indexing, and searching documents; methods for evaluating systems; and an introduction to the use of machine learning methods on text collections. All the important ideas are explained using examples and figures, making it perfect for introductory courses in information retrieval for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in computer science. Based on feedback from extensive classroom experience, the book has been carefully structured in order to make teaching more natural and effective. Slides and additional exercises (with solutions for lecturers) are also available through the book's supporting website to help course instructors prepare their lectures.
