Book Synopsis Handbook of Contact Mechanics by : Valentin L. Popov
Download or read book Handbook of Contact Mechanics written by Valentin L. Popov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book contains a structured collection of the complete solutions of all essential axisymmetric contact problems. Based on a systematic distinction regarding the type of contact, the regime of friction and the contact geometry, a multitude of technically relevant contact problems from mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and medical engineering are discussed. In addition to contact problems between isotropic elastic and viscoelastic media, contact problems between transversal-isotropic elastic materials and functionally graded materials are addressed, too. The optimization of the latter is a focus of current research especially in the fields of actuator technology and biomechanics. The book takes into account adhesive effects which allow access to contact-mechanical questions about micro- and nano-electromechanical systems. Solutions of the contact problems include both the relationships between the macroscopic force, displacement and contact length, as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and, if appropriate, within the half-space medium. Solutions are always obtained with the simplest available method - usually with the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR) or approaches which use the solution of the non-adhesive normal contact problem to solve the respective contact problem.
Download or read book Contact Problems written by L. A. Galin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L.A. Galin’s book on contact problems is a remarkable work. Actually there are two books: the first, published in 1953 deals with contact problems in the classical theory of elasticity; this is the one that was translated into English in 1961. The second book, published in 1980, included the first, and then had new sections on contact problems for viscoelastic materials, and rough contact problems; this section has not previously been translated into English. In this new translation, the original text and the mathematical analysis have been completely revised, new material has been added, and the material appearing in the 1980 Russian translation has been completely rewritten. In addition there are three essays by students of Galin, bringing the analysis up to date.

Book Synopsis Contact Problems in Elasticity by : N. Kikuchi
Download or read book Contact Problems in Elasticity written by N. Kikuchi and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of new results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes. Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials and mechanical engineering researchers studying wear, fretting, elastic indentation testing and other tribological processes frequently need closed-form solutions for various attributes of contacts. These characteristics include contact law, pressure distribution, internal state of stress induced and the influence of friction. Materials and mechanical engineering researchers studying wear, fretting, elastic indentation testing and other tribological processes frequently need closed-form solutions for various attributes of contacts. These characteristics include contact law, pressure distribution, internal state of stress induced and the influence of friction. These solutions, scattered throughout the applied mechanics literature, are difficult to locate, are presented using a range of solution techniques, and express results in a way that is suitable only for experts in the field. `Mechanics of Elastic Contacts' uses a consistent set of recipes for the solution of all relevant problems, presents results in the simplest possible forms, and contains summaries using tabulated data. This reference source will provide a clear guide to elastic contacts for engineering designers, materials scientists and tribologists irrespective of their level of expertise in this important subject.

Book Synopsis Tribology on the Small Scale by : C. Mathew Mate
Download or read book Tribology on the Small Scale written by C. Mathew Mate and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friction, lubrication, adhesion, and wear are prevalent physical phenomena in everyday life and in many key technologies. This book incorporates a bottom-up approach to friction, lubrication, and wear into a versatile textbook on tribology. This is done by focusing on how these tribological phenomena occur on the small scale — the atomic to the micrometer scale — a field often called nanotribology. The book covers the microscopic origins of the common tribological concepts of roughness, elasticity, plasticity, friction coefficients, and wear coefficients. Some macroscale concepts (like elasticity) scale down well to the micro- and atomic-scale, while other macroscale concepts (like hydrodynamic lubrication) do not. In addition, this book also has chapters on topics not typically found in tribology texts: surface energy, surface forces, lubrication in confined spaces, and the atomistic origins of friction and wear. These chapters cover tribological concepts that become increasingly important at the small scale: capillary condensation, disjoining pressure, contact electrification, molecular slippage at interfaces, atomic scale stick-slip, and atomic bond breaking. Throughout the book, numerous examples are provided that show how a nanoscale understanding of tribological phenomena is essential to the proper engineering of important modern technologies such as MEMS, disk drives, and nanoimprinting. For the second edition, all the chapters have been revised and updated to incorporate the most recent advancements in nanoscale tribology. Another important enhancement to the second edition is the addition of problem sets at the end of each chapter.

Book Synopsis Method of Dimensionality Reduction in Contact Mechanics by : Valentin L. Popov
Download or read book Method of Dimensionality Reduction in Contact Mechanics written by Valentin L. Popov and published by Technische Universität Berlin, Department of System Dynamics and Friction Physics. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is a collection of open-access papers describing the foundations and applications of the Method of Dimensionality Reduction (MDR), first published in the Journal “Facta Universitatis. Series Mechanical Enginerring” in the years 2014-2018. The Method of Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) is a method of calculation and simulation of contacts of elastic and viscoelastic bodies. It consists essentially of two simple steps: (a) substitution of the three-dimensional continuum by a uniquely defined one-dimensional linearly elastic or viscoelastic foundation (Winkler foundation) and (b) transformation of the three-dimensional profile of the contacting bodies by means of the MDR-transformation. As soon as these two steps are done, the contact problem can be considered to be solved. For axial symmetric contacts, only a small calculation by hand is required which does not exceed elementary calculus and will not be a barrier for any practically-oriented engineer. Alternatively, the MDR can be implemented numerically, which is almost trivial due to the independence of the foundation elements. In spite of its simplicity, all results are exact. The present book brings together papers covering the most important aspects of the MDR and providing a practical guide for its use.
