Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of officers with colleagues who perpetrate acts of domestic violence. This was a qualitative research design from a phenomenological perspective. The data was gathered by the use of face-to-face interviews using open-ended questions. The data was analyzed by the use of bracketing, horizonalization, clusters of meanings, textural and structural descriptions, and the invariant structure of the phenomena described by the study participants. Upon completion of the 30 interviews, the audio tapes were all transcribed, and loaded in to Atlas Ti for the purpose of coding the data for the major themes. A constant comparison method was used to analyze the data to help identify the similarities and differences between the study participants' perceptions with the phenomena. The five qualitative questions each depict a different area of experience with the phenomenon, to create a holistic picture of the perceptions of the thirty participants. The findings suggest that for some officers, the inability to separate their police role from their civilian role may be a factor in the perpetration of domestic violence by law enforcement officers. The findings also suggest that social workers may be able to play an important role in the remediation of the problem of domestic violence for those within and outside police social work settings.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The most recent research in police domestic violence has shown that officers may perpetrate domestic violence at a higher rate than the general population, 28% versus 16%, respectively (Sgambelluri, 2000). Traditional police sub-culture has been identified, in several studies, as contributing to higher work stress, and using force on the job (Alexander et al., 1993; Drummond, 1976; Johnson et al, 2005; Kop and Euwema, 2001; Sgambelluri, 2000; Wetendorf, 2000). This research, however, has not fully examined the link between adherence to the traditional police sub-culture and officer involvement in domestic violence. This study attempts to identify whether officers who adhere to the aspects of the traditional police sub-culture are more likely to use violence against their intimate partner using two types of domestic violence-physical assault and psychological violence-as well as examine gender's moderating influence on police domestic violence and traditional police sub-culture. Using a survey created from existing scales, 250 officers were contacted within several departments in Central Florida, of these, 90 officers responded. Using Tobit and Logistic Regression the study found that officers who adhere to aspects of the traditional police subculture are more likely to engage in psychological domestic violence. There was no relationship found between traditional police culture and physical domestic violence. A thorough discussion of the results and future research directions is also included.

Book excerpt: A survey of 425 police officers operating within fourteen police departments over a two countywide area of New Jersey examines police officers' attitudes and opinions concerning the enforcement of domestic violence laws. New Jersey is a jurisdiction with strict statewide mandatory arrest policies and procedures that apply to all police agencies. Extensive mandatory training is a key component to the New Jersey model of domestic violence enforcement. The first phase of the research examines similarities and differences by the setting in which officer's work: Urban, urban suburb, large suburban, and small suburban police agencies. The second phase examines six scenarios in which officers responded to questions as to how they would handle domestic situations. A follow-up question to each scenario explored the motivation and justification for the officer's action. The majority of police officers cited as their primary motivation in handling mandatory arrest situations of domestic violence that their actions were mandated under law. Yet, only about one-half of officers in the study had received all mandatory required training over the past four years. Police officers in a mandatory arrest jurisdiction for the enforcement of domestic violence laws rely heavily on their perception of the law to justify their enforcement activities. Significant correlations were found between a police officer's personal and professional positive opinions toward the enforcement of domestic violence legislation and his actions in mandatory arrest domestic violence situations. Police officers are more likely to make an arrest for a domestic violence offense in a mandatory arrest situation when they observe the offense as opposed to when they must rely on victim statements or physical evidence to establish probable cause.
