Book excerpt: A war that started under questionable pretexts. A president who is convinced of his country’s might and right. A military and political stalemate with United States troops occupying a foreign land against a stubborn and deadly insurgency. The time is the 1840s. The enemy is Mexico. And the war is one of the least known and most important in both Mexican and United States history—a war that really began much earlier and whose consequences still echo today. Acclaimed historian David A. Clary presents this epic struggle for a continent for the first time from both sides, using original Mexican and North American sources. To Mexico, the yanqui illegals pouring into her territories of Texas and California threatened Mexican sovereignty and security. To North Americans, they manifested their destiny to rule the continent. Two nations, each raising an eagle as her standard, blustered and blundered into a war because no one on either side was brave enough to resist the march into it. In Eagles and Empire, Clary draws vivid portraits of the period’s most fascinating characters, from the cold-eyed, stubborn United States president James K. Polk to Mexico’s flamboyant and corrupt general-president-dictator Antonio López de Santa Anna; from the legendary and ruthless explorer John Charles Frémont and his guide Kit Carson to the “Angel of Monterey” and the “Boy Heroes” of Chapultepec; from future presidents such as Benito Juárez and Zachary Taylor to soldiers who became famous in both the Mexican and North American civil wars that soon followed. Here also are the Irish Soldiers of Mexico and the Yankee sailors of two squadrons, hero-bandits and fighting Indians of both nations, guerrilleros and Texas Rangers, and some amazing women soldiers. From the fall of the Alamo and harrowing marches of thousands of miles in the wilderness to the bloody, dramatic conquest of Mexico City and the insurgency that continued to resist, this is a riveting narrative history that weaves together events on the front lines—where Indian raids, guerrilla attacks, and atrocities were matched by stunning acts of heroism and sacrifice—with battles on two home fronts—political backstabbing, civil uprisings, and battle lines between Union and Confederacy and Mexican Federalists and Centralists already being drawn. The definitive account of a defining war, Eagles and Empire is page-turning history—a book not to be missed.

Book excerpt: Before the Gold Rush of 1848-1858, Alta (Upper) California was an isolated cattle frontier--and home to a colorful group of Spanish-speaking, non-indigenous people known as Californios. Profiting from the forced labor of large numbers of local Indians, they carved out an almost feudal way of life, raising cattle along the California coast and valleys. Visitors described them as a good-looking, vibrant, improvident people. Many traces of their culture remain in California. Yet their prosperity rested entirely on undisputed ownership of large ranches. As they lost control of these in the wake of the Mexican War, they lost their high status and many were reduced to subsistence-level jobs or fell into abject poverty. Drawing on firsthand contemporary accounts, the authors chronicle the rise and fall of Californio men and women.

Download or read book Bear Flag Rising written by Dale L. Walker and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2000-05-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dale L. Walker, historian and author of Legends and Lies: Great Mysteries of the American West, takes on the conquest of California in this vivid portrait of America's manifest destiny. Bear Flag Rising traces the history of California from the Indians who inhabited the land before the first Europeans saw it through the warfare that would finally leave the province in American hands. The lives of the Californios in tranquil days before the advent of American trappers and the steady decline of the province under Mexico's neglectful rule are brought to life in this epic chronicle. Battles and skirmishes, such as the bitter fight on the San Gabriel River during the march to recapture Los Angeles, are meticulously re-created in all their vicious glory. Above all, Bear Flag Rising is rich with the personalities of the conquest--from John Charles Fremont, the ambitious, enigmatic explorer, to Commodore Robert Field Stockton, a wealthy, imperious, and ruthless naval officer, and Stephen Watts Kearny, who made a 2,000-mile overland march from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, annexing New Mexico on the way, and arrived in California to face Mexican lancers in battle. Bear Flag Rising reveals, through exacting research and masterful prose, the full story of how Mexico lost California and how this Pacific paradise went on to become "the greatest jewel in the crown of the American Empire." This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Stephen W. Kearny and the Conquest of California (1846-7): A Paper Read Before the Historical Society of Southern California, February 6, 1911 Who was the conqueror Of California? The question appears to be Simple enough to admit of a ready answer, but in reality it is a poser - at least for any one who is not satisfied to accept tradi tion unsupported by historic facts. The title rests, it may be said safely, among three men: John C. Fremont, Robert F. Stockton, and Stephen W. Kearny, all of whom contributed by their services, in varying degrees, to add the domain to the United States. Which one most nearly deserves the title, or whether it can be justly bestowed On one to the exclusion Of the other two, presents an interesting problem. F remont, with probably the least merit, made the deepest impression on the public. His name became a household word throughout the country as well as in California. To this day, indeed, the chief historic feature in the Old-time California town is invariably Fremont's Headquarters. Only Washington Seems to have had more abiding places, but then of course he had many more campaigns and battles to his credit. 'fremont was an active campaigner, in the sense that he covered much ground, but he did not happen to do much fighting. It may be news to many that he was never in a single battle on California soil. Yet on the strength of his claim to be regarded as the conqueror he was the first United States senator elected by the new State of Cali fornia, and the first candidate for president nominated by the new Republican Party. It has been Said, perhaps too harshly, that in most ways he was a man of no great ability, but he seems to have approached genius in his faculty for self-advancement. Commodore Stockton, whose claim to the title was asserted with equal vigor, and who sought to monopolize all the credit for the conquest, was only partially successful in his efforts. He, too, became a senator, for a short while, but his party chose Buchanan instead of him to run for president against Fremont. Although the Commodore has almost passed out of the popular mind he has remained in the histories. The writers thereof took him pretty much at his own estimation and have handed him down as the chief figure in the conquest. In California, of course, where an important city bears his name, he is by no means forgotten. A11 in all, he may be said to have fared reasonably well. Neither popular tradition, however.
