Book Synopsis The Confessions of Jeremiah in Context by : A.R. Pete Diamond
Download or read book The Confessions of Jeremiah in Context written by A.R. Pete Diamond and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Confessions' of Jeremiah have generally been interpreted as isolated poems interspersed among prophetic oracles. This book endeavours to read the Confessions in their present literary context. Diamond argues persuasively that the more the Confessions are isolated from their setting in the book of Jeremiah, the more opaque and indeterminate readings of them become. When they are allowed to function in the context determined for them by the editors of Jeremiah, they promote the editorial valuation of the prophet's mission-Israel's opposition to Jeremiah becomes the ground for a theodicy explaining the national disaster. Restoring the Confessions to their context in the book finally enables the author to demonstrate that chapters 11-20 form an integrated literary complex.

The first section contains studies of a more general nature, and helps situate Jeremiah in the scribal culture of the ancient world, as well as in relation to the Torah and the Hebrew Prophets. The second section contains commentary on and interpretation of specific passages (or sections) of Jeremiah, as well as essays on its genres and themes. The third section contains essays on the textual history and reception of Jeremiah in Judaism and Christianity. The final section explores various theological aspects of the book of Jeremiah.

Book Synopsis Reading the Book of Jeremiah by : Martin Kessler
Download or read book Reading the Book of Jeremiah written by Martin Kessler and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2004 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferment is the correct word by which to characterize current Jeremiah studies, a deep and broad stirring that relies on previous scholarship but that seeks to move beyond that scholarship in bold and new ways. This collection of fine essays not only reflects that ferment but in important ways contributes to it and advances the discussion. Most broadly, the current discussion seeks to move beyond the historical-critical categories of Sigmund Mowinckel and Bernhard Duhm and the classic formulation of three sources, A, B, and C. In Jeremiah as in other parts of biblical scholarship, the new questions concern the inadequacy of historical-critical readings of a positivistic kind and the prospect of synchronic readings, either through ideological analysis that seeks to show that ideology shapes the book, or through canonical readings that find a large theological intentionality to the whole of the book. It turns out, perforce, that ideological and canonical readings are closely twinned in their judgment about the literature. This present collection, which includes both new voices and some of the established major players in the discussion, merits important attention." From the preface, by Walter Brueggemann

Book Synopsis Celibacy in the Ancient World by : Dale Launderville
Download or read book Celibacy in the Ancient World written by Dale Launderville and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celibacy is a commitment to remain unmarried and to renounce sexual relations, for a limited period or for a lifetime. Such a commitment places an individual outside human society in its usual form, and thus questions arise: What significance does such an individual, and such a choice, have for the human family and community as a whole? Is celibacy possible? Is there a socially constructive role for celibacy? These questions guide Dale Launderville, OSB, in his study of celibacy in the ancient cultures of Israel, Mesopotamia, and Greece prior to Hellenism and the rise of Christianity. Launderville focuses especially on literary witnesses, because those enduring texts have helped to shape modern attitudes and can aid us in understanding the factors that may call forth the practice of celibacy in our own time. Readers will discover how celibacy fits within a context of relationships, and what kinds of relationships thus support a healthy and varied society, one aware of and oriented to its cosmic destiny. Dale Launderville, OSB, is professor of theology at Saint John's University School of Theology/Seminary, Collegeville, Minnesota. He is the author of Piety and Politics: The Dynamics of Royal Authority in Homeric Greece, Biblical Israel, and Old Babylonian Mesopotamia (Eerdmans, 2003) and Spirit and Reason: The Embodied Character of Ezekiel's Symbolic Thinking (Baylor University Press, 2007).
Book Synopsis Theology in Language, Rhetoric, and Beyond by : Jack R Lundbom
Download or read book Theology in Language, Rhetoric, and Beyond written by Jack R Lundbom and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Theology in Language, Rhetoric, and Beyond' places before a broad audience of students and general readers theological essays on both the Old and New Testaments. Theology is seen to derive from a number of sources: the biblical language, biblical rhetoric and composition, academic disciplines other than philosophy, and above all a careful exegesis of the biblical text. The essay on Psalm 23 makes use of anthropology and human-development theory; the essay on Deuteronomy incorporates Wisdom themes; the essay called Jeremiah and the Created Order looks at ideas not only about God and creation but also about the seldom-considered idea of God and a return to chaos; and the essay on the Confessions of Jeremiah examines, not the words thatthis extraordinary prophet was given by God to preach, but what he himself felt and experienced in the office to which he was called. One essay on Biblical and theological themes includes a translation into the African language of Lingala, which weaves together the story of early Christianity with the more recent founding of churches in Africa and Asia. Jack R. Lundbom argues eloquently through these essays that theology is rooted in biblical words, in themselves, in rhetoric and their different contexts.
Book Synopsis The Responsive Self by : Susan Niditch
Download or read book The Responsive Self written by Susan Niditch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Works created in the period from the Babylonian conquest of Judea through the takeover and rule of Judea and Samaria by imperial Persia reveal a profound interest in the religious responses of individuals and an intimate engagement with the nature of personal experience. Using the rich and varied body of literature preserved in the Hebrew Bible, Susan Niditch examines ways in which followers of Yahweh, participating in long-standing traditions, are shown to privatize and personalize religion. Their experiences remain relevant to many of the questions we still ask today: Why do bad things happen to good people? Does God hear me when I call out in trouble? How do I define myself? Do I have a personal relationship with a divine being? How do I cope with chaos and make sense of my experience? What roles do material objects and private practices play within my religious life? These questions deeply engaged the ancient writers of the Bible, and they continue to intrigue contemporary people who try to find meaning in life and to make sense of the world. The Responsive Self studies a variety of phenomena, including the use of first-person speech, seemingly autobiographic forms and orientations, the emphasis on individual responsibility for sin, interest in the emotional dimensions of biblical characters, and descriptions of self-imposed ritual. This set of interests lends itself to exciting approaches in the contemporary study of religion, including the concept of "lived religion," and involves understanding and describing what people actually do and believe in cultures of religion.
Book Synopsis The 'Uncertainty of a Hearing' by : Federico Villanueva
Download or read book The 'Uncertainty of a Hearing' written by Federico Villanueva and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interesting feature in the lament psalms is the sudden change of mood. Unfortunately, as the term that has come to be associated with the subject indicates – ‘Certainty of a Hearing’ – the change of mood is understood only in terms of a movement from lament to praise. This has led to a redefinition of lament in terms of petition and an overemphasis on praise. The present book seeks to redress this one-sided emphasis by drawing attention to the other movements in the Psalter – the reverse movement from praise to lament, return to lament after praise and the alternation between the two. We do not only have a ‘Certainty of a Hearing’; we also have an ‘Uncertainty of a Hearing’.
Download or read book Jeremiah Invented written by Else K. Holt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of the 20th century there was immense scholarly interest in the biography of the prophet Jeremiah as the background for understanding the development of the book of Jeremiah. Around the turn of the century this interest disappeared, but it has now resurfaced in a transformed configuration as work seeking to analyze the creation of the literary persona, Jeremiah the prophet. This volume examines the construction of Jeremiah in the prophetic book and its afterlife, presenting a wide range of scholarly approaches spanning the understanding of Jeremiah from Old Testament times via the Renaissance to the 20th century, and from theology to the history of literature.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Study of Jeremiah by : C.L. Crouch
Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Jeremiah written by C.L. Crouch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. L. Crouch provides a clear and concise introduction to the complex text of Jeremiah. Readers are introduced to the diverse approaches to the book, with attention paid to the way that these approaches differ from but also relate to one another. After a brief introduction, Crouch addresses the formation of the book, especially in relation to its Hebrew and Greek versions; the theological interests of the book and the challenges posed by attempts to link these to an actual man 'Jeremiah'; and the relationship of Jeremiah to other biblical prophets. Crouch focuses clearly on method and on approaches to the text, as is the mark of this series. This makes the book especially useful for students in the quest to navigate the diverse body of scholarly literature that surrounds this troublesome biblical book.
