Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conference of Orientalists Including Museums and Archaeology Conference Held at Simla, July 1911 A Conference of Orientalists was summoned at Simla by the Hon'ble Mr. S. Harcourt Butler, Member of Council for Education. It was decided to include in the discussion the subjects of Oriental studies, and (as kindred topics) of Museums and Archaeology. Distinguished scholars, specially interested in these subjects, Were invited from every part of India. The means for encouraging and improving Oriental studies were discussed in full Conference on the 12th, 13th and 14th J uly. On the last of these dates two subvcommit tees were formed Which discussed the proposal for a Central Research Institute and the system of language examinations respectively, and continued their sittings on the 15th. On the 17th the Conference (re-enforced by those specially interested in the subjects) discussed general questions connected With Museum and Archaeology, Whlle more special questions Were taken up by committees on the 18th and 19th. The following pages give the substance of the general debates and the recommendations of the committees and sub-committees. The ap ndices consist of a selection of the papers circulated and of notes handed in ymembers of the Conference and others they are grouped according to the five main heads of discussion - the general encouragement of oriental studies, the pmposal for a Central Research I nstitute, examinations, Museums and.
