Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey’s bid to join the European Union has lent new urgency to the issue of the Armenian Genocide as differing interpretations of the genocide are proving to be a major reason for the delay of the its accession. This book provides vital background information and is a prime source of legal evidence and authentic Turkish eyewitness testimony of the intent and the crime of genocide against the Armenians. After a long and painstaking effort, the authors, one an Armenian, the other a Turk, generally recognized as the foremost experts on the Armenian Genocide, have prepared a new, authoritative translation and detailed analysis of the Takvim-i Vekâyi, the official Ottoman Government record of the Turkish Military Tribunals concerning the crimes committed against the Armenians during World War I. The authors have compiled the documentation of the trial proceedings for the first time in English and situated them within their historical and legal context. These documents show that Wartime Cabinet ministers, Young Turk party leaders, and a number of others inculpated in these crimes were court-martialed by the Turkish Military Tribunals in the years immediately following World War I. Most were found guilty and received sentences ranging from prison with hard labor to death. In remarkable contrast to Nuremberg, the Turkish Military Tribunals were conducted solely on the basis of existing Ottoman domestic penal codes. This substitution of a national for an international criminal court stands in history as a unique initiative of national self-condemnation. This compilation is significantly enhanced by an extensive analysis of the historical background, political nature and legal implications of the criminal prosecution of the twentieth century’s first state-sponsored crime of genocide.

If that is the case, why is it still a topical issue, capable of causing diplomatic rows and heated debates? The short answer would be that the century old Armenian Genocide is much more than a historical question. It emerged as a political dilemma on the international arena at the San Stefano peace conference in 1878 and has remained as such into our days. The disparity between knowledge and acknowledgement, mainly ascribable to Turkey’s official denial of the genocide, has only heightened the politicization of the Armenian question. Thus, the memories of the WWI era refuse to be relegated to the pages of history but are rather perceived as a vivid presence. This is the result of the perpetual process of politics of memory. The politics of memory is an intricate and interdisciplinary negotiation, engaging many different actors in the society who have access to a wide range of resources and measures in order to achieve their goals. By following the Armenian question during the past century up to its Centennial Commemoration in 2015, this study aims to explain why and how the politics of memory of the Armenian Genocide has kept it as a topical issue in our days.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armenian Question Before the Peace Conference In the entire Armenian nation, whose elected Delegates from Armenia and from all the other parts of the world are now assembled in Conferenee in Paris, the Armenian National Delegation has the honor to submit to the Peace Conference this Memorandum, which summarizes the claims and aspirations of the Armenian Nation. Alter centuries of oppression and of suffering our nation, at the end of the World War, finds itself torn up and bleeding, but vibrating with life and determined with a faith stronger than ever before to set itself free and to attain the realization of its national ideal through the victory of the Associated Powers, which have inscribed on their banners the principles of Right, of Justice and of the right of peoples to dispose of their own destiny. Kelying upon these great principles, the Armenian National Delegation, interpreting the unanimous will of the entire nation, a part of which has already constituted itself into an Independent public in the Caucasus, proclaimed the independence of Integral Armenia and brought that fact to the attention of the Allied Governments by a note dated November 30, 1918 About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
