Set against the backdrop of economic downturn and struggle in the interwar years, in the years preceding the great depression, this is work of social, historical and economic interest.

Download or read book Reappraising J. A. Hobson (Routledge Revivals) written by Michael Freeden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. A. Hobson was one of the most influential social, economic and political theorists of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. In this volume, first published in 1990, eight scholars reassess the importance and relevance of his work today and affirm him as a major British thinker. These original studies place Hobson in context by explaining his intellectual antecedents: Cobden, Ruskin, nineteenth-century social and psychological theories and economic thought. The book provides an overview of the novelty and incisiveness of Hobson's contribution to British liberal theory and radical practice. Historians, economists, social and political theorists and students of international affairs will find this an important book for a fuller understanding of early twentieth-century British progressive thought.

Book Synopsis The Economic Basis of a Durable Peace (Routledge Revivals) by : James E. Meade
Download or read book The Economic Basis of a Durable Peace (Routledge Revivals) written by James E. Meade and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1940, this book suggested the basic principles upon which a new international economic order should be built at the end of the Second World War. Particular attention is paid to the possibility of constructing such an international order on the basis of divergent national economic systems – whether liberal or planned, capitalist or socialist. In undertaking this task the author combines theoretical analysis with a description of the immediate pre-war economic situation and writes in a language which is equally accessible to the economist and the layman.

Book excerpt: The argument of this book is addressed to those who desire to order their daily lives, in the homme, in the shop, in the factory, or on the farm, in conformity with the highest ethical standards, or in more familiar words, to live according to the will of God; and to them only. They constitute, I hope, a large proportion of mankind but be that as it ma, I know that there are at present among them many who are sorely perplexed in mind, and gravely disturbed in conscience, by the apparent contradiction between the precepts of ethics and the laws of economics. It is my earnest hope that in this book they mind some help towards the solution of their difficulties
Book Synopsis The Forging of the Modern State by : Eric J. Evans
Download or read book The Forging of the Modern State written by Eric J. Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this hugely ambitious history of Britain, Eric Evans surveys every aspect of the period in which the country was transformed into the world’s first industrial power. This was an era of revolutionary change unparalleled in Britain, yet one in which transformation was achieved without political revolution. The unique combination of transition and revolution is a major theme in the book, which ranges across the embryonic empire, the Church, education, health, finance, and rural and urban life. Evans gives particular attention to the Great Reform Act of 1832. The Third Edition includes an entirely new introductory chapter, and is illustrated for the first time.

Book Synopsis The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.
