He is best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate) and his commentaries on the whole Bible. Jerome was known for his teachings on Christian moral life. In many cases, he focused his attention on the lives of women and identified how a woman devoted to Jesus should live her life. Book excerpt: The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem. His most ambitious achievement was his Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint. He believed that mainstream Rabbinical Judaism had rejected the Septuagint as invalid scriptural texts, due to Hellenistic mistranslations. Jerome’s numerous biblical, ascetical, monastic and theological works went on to have a profound influence in the early Middle Ages. Download or read book The Principal Works of St. Jerome written by St. Jerome and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Jerome’s importance lies in the facts: (1) That he was the author of the Vulgate Translation of the Bible into Latin, (2) That he bore the chief part in introducing the ascetic life into Western Europe, (3) That his writings more than those of any of the Fathers bring before us the general as well as the ecclesiastical life of his time. It was a time of special interest, the last age of the old Greco-Roman civilization, the beginning of an altered world. It included the reigns of Julian (361–63), Valens (364–78), Valentinian (364–75), Gratian (375–83), Theodosius (379–95) and his sons, the definitive establishment of orthodox Christianity in the Empire, and the sack of Rome by Alaric (410). It was the age of the great Fathers, of Ambrose and Augustine in the West, of Basil, the Gregories, and Chrysostom in the East.

Download or read book Against Jovinianus written by St. Jerome and published by Dalcassian Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JEROME—or, to give him his significant Greek name, Eusebius Hieronymus—was born A.D. 345 at Stridon in Dalmatia, a small town near Aquileia, which was partly destroyed by the Goths during their invasion of 377. His father, Eusebius, and his mother were Christians of moderate wealth and were alive in 373 when Jerome first went to the East, but probably died when Stridon was taken by the barbarians. Jerome himself received a good education at his local school, and then, like most young provincials of talent, he was attracted to Rome, where he studied rhetoric under the great grammarian Aelius Donatus, returning with his friend Bonosus to Aquileia in 370. In that town he established his first society of ascetics, which lasted for three years until some event—referred to by him variously as ‘a sudden storm’ and ‘a monstrous rending asunder’—broke up the fellowship, and Jerome with a few of his closer associates went eastwards to Antioch. Book Synopsis St. Luke the Evangelist by : Kevin McCarthy
Download or read book St. Luke the Evangelist written by Kevin McCarthy and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know relatively little about St. Luke the Evangelist: that he was a Syrian of Antioch, a physician by profession, a disciple of the apostles of Jesus, and a follower of St. Paul on several of the latter's journeys. Looking closely at the third Gospel and at the Acts of the Apostles, as well as texts about ancient medicine, medical training, and the influence of Luke on subsequent writers and artists, we can begin to flesh out more details about his life. This book uses illustrations to better explain Luke's time and his later influence on many who followed him.
Book Synopsis The Slavic Letters of St. Jerome by : Julia Verkholantsev
Download or read book The Slavic Letters of St. Jerome written by Julia Verkholantsev and published by Northern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Slavic Letters of St. Jerome is the first book-length study of the medieval legend that Church Father and biblical translator St. Jerome was a Slav who invented the Slavic (Glagolitic) alphabet and Roman Slavonic rite. Julia Verkholantsev locates the roots of this belief among the Latin clergy in Dalmatia in the 13th century and describes in fascinating detail how Slavic leaders subsequently appropriated it to further their own political agendas. The Slavic language, written in Jerome's alphabet and endorsed by his authority, gained the unique privilege in the Western Church of being the only language other than Latin, Greek, and Hebrew acceptable for use in the liturgy. Such privilege, confirmed repeatedly by the popes, resulted in the creation of narratives about the distinguished historical mission of the Slavs and became a possible means for bridging the divide between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches in the Slavic-speaking lands. In the fourteenth century the legend spread from Dalmatia to Bohemia and Poland, where Glagolitic monasteries were established to honor the Apostle of the Slavs Jerome and the rite and letters he created. The myth of Jerome's apostolate among the Slavs gained many supporters among the learned and spread far and wide, reaching Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and England. Grounded in extensive archival research, Verkholantsev examines the sources and trajectory of the legend of Jerome's Slavic fellowship within a wider context of European historical and theological thought. This unique volume will appeal to medievalists, Slavicists, scholars of religion, those interested in saints' cults, and specialists of philology.
Book Synopsis Jerome's Commentary on Daniel by : Jerome
Download or read book Jerome's Commentary on Daniel written by Jerome and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary has high value for the academic world and is of particular value for research. It is equally valuable from a devotional point of view. Jerome was a Church Father and famous ecclesiastical author who died in A.D. 420. His writings cover nearly all the principal departments of Christian theology, but the most numerous and important belong to that of Biblical study. Among the latter is his Commentary on Daniel, which is one of the most interesting and significant of his expository works. It is frequently consulted by the learned even to this day. It here appears for the first time in the English language. The manuscript here published in book form won form Dr. Archer the much coveted Certificate of Award presented by the Christian Research Foundation for the year's most important manuscript in the field of Biblical Research.
