Book excerpt: “A dignified and impressive addition to your bookshelf that reveals James’s virtuoso performance in a genre he helped to define, refine and elevate.” — The Commercial Appeal This Library of America volume, the first of five of Henry James’s short fiction, brings together his first twenty-four published stories, thirteen never collected by James. Encompassing a wide range of subjects, settings, and formal techniques, they show the first explorations of some of James’s most significant themes: the force of social convention and the compromises it demands; the complex and often ambiguous encounter between Europe and America; the energies of passion measured against the rigors of artistic discipline. By his mid-twenties, James was a regular contributor to the most prestigious and popular magazines of his era. He is equally at ease writing historical tales, such as “Gabrielle de Bergerac,” a love story set in pre-Revolutionary France, as he is exploring contemporary events, as in the three stories that treat the effects of the American Civil War on civilians. James’s psychological acuity is already evident in “Master Eustace,” a study of the ruthlessness of a spoiled child, and in “Guest’s Confession,” where the comic portrayal of an arrogant businessman hints at his cruelty and self-absorption. In “The Romance of Certain Old Clothes,” and “The Last of the Valerii,” James begins to work with the supernatural and fantastic motifs that would continue to surface in his work. Early examples of James’s lifelong fascination with art and artists include “A Landscape Painter,” about a young painter’s attraction to a seemingly simple family living in a desolate coastal town, and “The Madonna of the Future,” where an aging artist avoids the unveiling of his masterpiece. Adumbrating later triumphs and compelling in their own right, these stories reveal and accomplished and cosmopolitan young talent mastering the art of the short story. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Robert Emmet Long demonstrates James' transformation of Hawthorne's romantic forms into realism, as one of the significant features of James' early career. Long shows that Hawthorne provided James ith a native tradition having its own conceptions of American psychological experience.

Book excerpt: Both James’s life and his literary career might be figured as a double spiral rooted at the one end in the American soil and in romanticism, contracting in its middle on contact with France and French naturalism and expanding again into the Anglo-Saxon world and into the twentieth century. The spiral—which also suggests the artist’s indirect approach to reality—strikes me as an adequate symbol for Henry James. From Bramante’s ramp in the Vatican to F.L. Wright’s in the Guggenheim Museum it has always been the favourite shape of all those who claimed greater freedom for the artist, rejected the fixity of academic rules and were convinced that art, like the spirit of man, is capable of endless progress.

Book excerpt: Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity aims to advance the field of studies on the life and work of Henry James by fully exploring the author’s use of duplicity, one of the key literary and rhetorical strategies within the author’s vast and infamous arsenal of techniques of ‘ambiguity’. The collection brings together essays by both long established and more recent Jamesian scholars from eleven different countries, the collective work of whom, through this publication, further enhances our grasp of the ever-elusive literary style of Henry James. The prefatory section of this volume provides a general overview of the myriad uses of ‘duplicity’ in the writings of Henry James. The collected essays are then divided into five sections, each providing an in-depth study of a particular use of duplicity as a rhetorical strategy. The first three sections focus on duplicitous devices employed within James’s works of fiction – including the author’s often underhanded use of undisclosed literary sources (‘Duplicitous Subtexts’), his staging of characters who rely on subterfuge and outright lying (‘Duplicitous Characters’), and his creation of doubles and doppelgängers – another key connotation of the term ‘duplicity’ – both within a single work and throughout his literary career (‘Duplicitous Representation’). The two final sections then focus the poetics of duplicity employed in works of non-fiction by James, including his autobiographies and his reviews of other authors, as well as in his personal writings and correspondence. This includes James’s guileful use of duplicity in his representation of himself, particular attention being paid to James’s late works of self-assessment (‘Duplicitous Self-Representation’), as well as in his assessments of other writers in his reviews or of certain places in his travel writing (‘Duplicitous Judgements’). Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity would thus be a great asset to scholars of James at all levels, from the student grappling with James’s literary sleight of hand for the first time, to specialists in the field of James who have long studied the masterful art of James’s literary trickery.

Book excerpt: In her persuasively argued study, Patricia Pulham astutely combines psychoanalytic theory with socio-historical criticism to examine a selection of fantastic tales by the female aesthete and intellectual Vernon Lee (Violet Paget, 1856-1935). Lee's own definition of the supernatural in the preface to Hauntings questions the nature of the 'genuine ghost', and argues that this figure is not found in the Society of Psychical Research but in our own psyches, where it functions as a mediator between past and present. Using D.W. Winnicott's 'transitional object' theory, which maintains that adults transfer their childhood engagement with toys to art and cultural artifacts, Pulham argues that the prevalence of the past in Lee's tales signifies not only an historical but a psychic past. Thus the 'ghosts' that haunt Lee's supernatural fiction, as well as her aesthetic, psychological, and historical writings, held complex meanings for her that were fundamental to her intellectual development and allowed her to explore alternative identities that permit the expression of transgressive sexualities.

Book excerpt: Henry James was the preeminent American writer of the late 19th century, a master of fiction who was also a subtle and audacious literary theorist. This volume brings together the most important of his short stories and novellas with his most significant critical writings. Selected from Library of America's authoritative five-volume edition of James's complete stories, the works collected here--among them "Daisy Miller," "The Aspern Papers," "The Beast in the Jungle," "The Turn of the Screw," and "The Great Good Place"--display his astonishing creative range, encompassing social comedy and supernatural horror, acute psychological portraiture and penetrating analysis of cultural conflict. A selection of James's criticism includes "The Art of Fiction," his declaration of the novelist's freedom, the celebrated preface to The Portrait of a Lady, and fascinating discussions of Hawthorne, Emerson, Whitman, Shakespeare, and Balzac.
