Book excerpt: Information on the typical costs of waterproofing a basement yourself and the steps it takes to complete this task. There are many ways to waterproof a basement. Waterproofing methods generally fall into three main categories or systems. Your first option is the barrier system. Barrier systems work by preventing moisture, condensation or water from invading your basement walls and flooring. A barrier system can be placed on the exterior of your home (the foundation of the house, where water can seep into the basement) or on the interior of the basement (walls, flooring, and wall joint). Your second option is a diversion system. A diversion system, as the name implies, collects and diverts water away from the affected area. Sump pumps are a prime example of an effective diversion system for basements. Water accumulates in a cavity known as the sump pit and a high-powered pump collects and diverts the water away from the basement. This is an excellent choice if your basement experiences heavy flooding during the rainy season. Your third option is a drainage system. Drainage systems are often used in conjunction with diversion systems. Drainage tiles and solid membranes are examples of drainage systems. A drainage system has two main functions: to separate the rest of the basement from the seeping water or moisture and to collect and transport the water to the basement drain.

Book excerpt: The Complete Guide to Home Water & Moisture Problems includes more than 80 colour illustrations and instructional diagrams covering maintenance and repair of wet and damp basements?the most common and frustrating problems that homeowners encounter?and other moisture problems in the home. The single most commonly reported problem from homeowners is a wet basement and the problems associated with it?weakening foundation walls, mold and mildew, loss of storage space, and odor. Professional fixes are expensive and often involve digging trenches and excavating?far beyond the reach of the average homeowner. Odds are, however, that the homeowner can cure the wet basement problem by attacking the problem in several easy ways, which are demonstrated in this easy-to-use guide. Other home water problems involve leaking roofs, leaking plumbing, and high humidity. This book is designed to solve these problems?and more?saving homeowners possibly thousands of dollars by demonstrating how moisture and water problems can be conquered by following relatively easy steps. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the arsenal of weapons against leakage has grown, so has confusion among architects and engineers attempting to select the best below-grade waterproofing systems and materials. Manufacturers literature offers little assistance during the selection process, as well as being biased in favor of a particular product. The first guide devoted exclusively to the subject, The Manual of Below-Grade Waterproofing Systems picks up where manufacturers manuals leave off. Written by an architect with more than twenty years of experience designing habitable underground spaces, it provides frank, unbiased appraisals of various waterproofing materials and systems. This manual presents architects and engineers with expert guidance on selecting, designing with, and specifying waterproofing materials and systems. Justin Henshell walks you step by step through the entire waterproofing process from determining waterproofing needs to selecting and specifying waterproofing systems to preparing detailed drawings for construction documents. And throughout, he offers architectural details which illustrate general design principles, as well as high-quality photographs of waterproofing failures that help you to more clearly comprehend common design errors and problems associated with various waterproofing materials. The Manual of Below-Grade Waterproofing Systems is an indispensable working resource for architects, civil engineers, contractors, specifiers, materials manufacturers, landscape architects, and all other professionals involved with the design and construction of habitable underground spaces.
