Book excerpt: "The Complete Letters of Nietzsche'' compiles the extensive correspondence of Nietzsche into a dingle collection, creating a window into Nietzsche's intellectual and emotional journey chronologically. This edition contains an index of the personalities mentioned in Nietzsche's letters to provide holistic context to Nietzsche's thoughts and personal interactions, including his mother Franziska, sister Elisabeth, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Wilhelm Fliess, Meta von Salis, Peter Gast (Heinrich Köselitz), Franz Overbeck, Heinrich von Stein and other personal friends. These letters contain fascinating context to Nietzsche's life and philosophical project, including commentary on his movement away from Protestantism, discussions on significant events and ideas, such as the transformation of the Oratory, thoughts on music and literature, and reflections on personal and philosophical dilemmas. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. This Reader's Edition also contains extra material that amplifies the manuscript with autobiographical, historical and linguistic context. This provides the reader a holistic view of this very enigmatic philosopher as both an introduction and an exploration of Nietzsche's works; from his general understanding of his philosophic project to an exploration of the depths of his metaphysics and unique contributions. This edition contains: • An Afterword by the Translator on the history, impact and intellectual legacy of Nietzsche • Translation notes on the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript • An index of Philosophical concepts used by Nietzsche with a focus on Existentialism and Phenomenology • A chronological list of Nietzsche's entire body of works • A detailed timeline of Nietzsche's life and works Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, poet, musician (briefly) and philologist whose work has had a profound impact on modern intellectual history. Known for his critiques of traditional European morality and religion, Nietzsche's ideas on the "will to power" and the "Übermensch" have influenced a wide range of philosophical, literary, and psychological thought including thinkers such as Michael Foucault and the entire Postmodern religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of personal correspondence provides a rare window into the private life of the toweringnineteenth-century philosopher. Friedrich Nietzsche was the most iconoclastic philosopher of modern history. He is known to the world as the scathingly brilliant provocateur behind such foundational works as Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and Twilight of the Idols. This was Nietzsche as he addressed himself to the public. But in this collection of his personal letters, we discover a very different man: Nietzsche the devoted son; the caring friend; the university student; the shy and distant lover. Comprised of correspondence between Nietzsche’s inner circle—including several revelatory letters to his sister—Unpublished Letters gives readers a never-before-seen look into the philosopher’s daily life.
Book Synopsis Dead Letters to Nietzsche, or the Necromantic Art of Reading Philosophy by : Joanne Faulkner
Download or read book Dead Letters to Nietzsche, or the Necromantic Art of Reading Philosophy written by Joanne Faulkner and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead Letters to Nietzsche examines how writing shapes subjectivity through the example of Nietzsche’s reception by his readers, including Stanley Rosen, David Farrell Krell, Georges Bataille, Laurence Lampert, Pierre Klossowski, and Sarah Kofman. More precisely, Joanne Faulkner finds that the personal identification that these readers form with Nietzsche’s texts is an enactment of the kind of identity-formation described in Lacanian and Kleinian psychoanalysis. This investment of their subjectivity guides their understanding of Nietzsche’s project, the revaluation of values. Not only does this work make a provocative contribution to Nietzsche scholarship, but it also opens in an original way broader philosophical questions about how readers come to be invested in a philosophical project and how such investment alters their subjectivity.

Download or read book Conversations with Nietzsche written by Sander L. Gilman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-06-20 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche's friend, the philosopher Paul Rée, once said that Nietzsche was more important for his letters than for his books, and even more important for his conversations than for his letters. In Conversations with Nietzsche, Sander Gilman and David Parent present a fascinating selection of eighty-seven memoirs, anecdotes, and informal recollections by friends and acquaintances of Nietzsche. Translated from the definitive German collection, Begegnungen mit Nietzsche, these biographical pieces--some of which have never before appeared in English--cover the entire span of Nietzsche's life: his boyhood friendships, his arrival at the University of Bonn, his appointment to professor at Basel at age twenty-four, the impact of The Birth of Tragedy, his friendship with Wagner, his life in Italy, his confinement at the Jena Sanatorium, and his death. They present the philosopher in dialogue with friends and acquaintances, and provide new insights into him as a thinker and as a commentator on his times, recounting his views on some of the greats of history, including Burckhardt, Goethe, Kant, Dostoevsky, Napoleon, and numerous others. In his selections, Gilman has carefully balanced documents concerning Nietzsche's personal life with others on his intellectual development, resulting in an entertaining and informative book that will appeal to a wide audience of educated readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Friedrich Nietzsche have fascinated readers around the world ever since the publication of his first book more than a hundred years ago. As Walter Kaufmann, one of the world’s leading authorities on Nietzsche, notes in his introduction, “Few writers in any age were so full of ideas,” and few writers have been so consistently misinterpreted. The Portable Nietzsche includes Kaufmann’s definitive translations of the complete and unabridged texts of Nietzsche’s four major works: Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist, Nietzsche Contra Wagner and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In addition, Kaufmann brings together selections from his other books, notes, and letters, to give a full picture of Nietzsche’s development, versatility, and inexhaustibility. “In this volume, one may very conveniently have a rich review of one of the most sensitive, passionate, and misunderstood writers in Western, or any, literature.” —Newsweek

Book Synopsis Nietzsche's Enlightenment by : Paul Franco
Download or read book Nietzsche's Enlightenment written by Paul Franco and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much attention has been lavished on Friedrich Nietzsche’s earlier and later works, those of his so-called middle period have been generally neglected, perhaps because of their aphoristic style or perhaps because they are perceived to be inconsistent with the rest of his thought. With Nietzsche’s Enlightenment, Paul Franco gives this crucial section of Nietzsche’s oeuvre its due, offering a thoughtful analysis of the three works that make up the philosopher’s middle period: Human, All too Human; Daybreak; and The Gay Science. It is Nietzsche himself who suggests that these works are connected, saying that their “common goal is to erect a new image and ideal of the free spirit.” Franco argues that in their more favorable attitude toward reason, science, and the Enlightenment, these works mark a sharp departure from Nietzsche’s earlier, more romantic writings and differ in important ways from his later, more prophetic writings, beginning with Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The Nietzsche these works reveal is radically different from the popular image of him and even from the Nietzsche depicted in much of the secondary literature; they reveal a rational Nietzsche, one who preaches moderation instead of passionate excess and Dionysian frenzy. Franco concludes with a wide-ranging examination of Nietzsche’s later works, tracking not only how his outlook changes from the middle period to the later but also how his commitment to reason and intellectual honesty in his middle works continues to inform his final writings.
