Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a student reference guide book for the MD/PhD application process. It begins with an overview of the structure of a typical MD/PhD program as well as student outcomes and career choices of MD/PhD graduates. Next is an outline of the academic and extracurricular prerequisites as well as the basic components of the application itself. The authors then address the factors that MD/PhD students should consider when selecting schools to which to apply. Continuing to the main application, examples are provided of all the different essay types that MD/PhD applicants will encounter along with comments on how to address the deliberately vague and abstract prompts while tailoring the responses to the combined-degree program. Most uniquely, included is a very detailed explanation of the many types of interviews that applicants will encounter and how to prepare for them by integrating extensive personal experience and first-hand discussions with MD/PhD program leaders. Lastly, there will be a discussion on how to cope with the year-long timeline that constitutes this application process and provide guidance regarding properly responding to acceptances and waitlist offers. Written by a team of authors each experienced with the MD/PhD application, this book aids the prospective applicant with navigating this challenging process.

This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A how-to book written from the perspective of an older brother giving helpful and 'real-talk' advice to a younger brother about to enter college concerning everything college life including: How to Handle a Roommate, How to Network, How to Meet Girls, How to Study, How to be Organized, How to get an A in Every Class, How to Stay Happy, How to Stay Focused, and How to be Successful in all Aspects of College Life. This book is first hand advice from Jake Carpenter-Thompson who graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA and Summa Cum Laude from his undergraduate university and went on to attend a prestigious MD/PhD program. This is hardcore straightforward advice from someone who has been there and done all that you or your friend/family member wants to accomplish in college. Get honest, straight forward VALUABLE advice from someone who has firsthand experience and knowhow. A must have book for any student at any level. This book is not written above you, or below you but rather it is written right at you. A tested and proven method to get an A in every class and to graduate ranked number one. This book will make college life enjoyable, amazing and easy for anyone who takes the time to read this short simple straightforward book. Jake said "Look this book could have been 300+ pages, but as a student myself, I do not want to be spending weeks trying to read through a book about college when I should be out there actually being a part of college. That is why I thought it was very important to keep the book short, sweet and jam-packed with all the critical, most important information students need so they can read the book in one afternoon then use the knowledge practically in college life." That is one of the major features of this book that sets it apart from those other so called college guides (more like time drains). The second major factor that sets this book apart is that all the information comes from Jake Carpenter-Thompson, a student that graduated with a perfect 4.0 in undergraduate earning the coveted title Summa Cum Laude, and is now enrolled in a prestigious MD/PhD program getting his medical tuition paid for by the university. If you want great advice that has been tried and proven, this book is the source to get it from. Think of it like this, if you want to be a movie star who would you rather talk to, a non-famous person who thinks they can help you because they have heard about how to be a movie star, or would you rather find out from a bonafide starlet. That is what this book is all about, information directly from Jake who has gotten a 4.0 in undergrad and gotten into a prestigious MD/PhD program.

Book excerpt: For decades, top scientists in colleges and universities pursued a clear path to success: enroll in a prestigious graduate program, conduct research, publish papers, complete the PhD, pursue postdoctoral work. With perseverance and a bit of luck, a tenure-track professorship awaited at the end. In today’s academic job market, this scenario represents the exception. As the number of newly conferred science PhDs keeps rising, the number of tenured professorships remains stubbornly stagnant. “Next Gen PhD: A Guide to Career Paths in Science is a practical and thorough manual for the entire career transition process, from defining personal interests and deciding on a career path all the way to day one of a new job. Written by experienced career counselor Melanie Sinche, it is geared toward postdocs and graduate students who may not have access to effective career counseling or mentorship or are not satisfied with what they have received thus far.” —Teegan A. Dellibovi-Ragheb, Science “With its focus on PhD level scientists, this book fills a gap in job search and career information literature. It’s a must-read for those contemplating or actively pursuing studies in the subject area, as well as those who provide guidance to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars.” —Alan Farber, Library Journal (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly known that the application process to medical school is competitive. From our experience, about 1% of students who express an interest in becoming a physician during their first year of undergraduate studies, eventually matriculate into medical school. While pursuing a career in medicine remains a dream for many and is considered the endpoint of a journey, many different paths can lead towards that destination. Given the significant time commitment required for a successful application, the decision to pursue medicine is one of the biggest decisions many high school and undergraduate students face. However, many applicants do not look beyond gaining the coveted admission letter and are then left with an incomplete understanding of what medical school entails, and the diverse career paths they can take after obtaining their MD. One of the primary reasons for this is that despite significant progress made in recent years, medicine remains a “closed door” career. A large proportion of students in our medical class had at least one immediate relative within the profession, which is also reflected in the literature. The barriers created by such exclusivity make it difficult for those who have not been socialized into the profession from a young age to navigate the unspoken pitfalls of the admissions process. This book attempts to break down some of those barriers. It focuses on every component of the medical school application process. It differs from the many other books written on this subject by taking an experiential approach. We believe that the best way to learn about medical school acceptance is to garner advice from those who have recently achieved that milestone, as well, as from individuals in related professions who can provide valuable insights. This guide is divided into ten chapters, each of them covering an important step along a premed's journey. While this book has a focus on North America, we have written this guide with a global audience in mind, as many of the concepts discussed are relevant to any medical school application process. As such, although the key components of the application process to medical school remain the same across various training systems, not every chapter will be equally relevant to every reader. Typically, an application is composed of academic performance, volunteer activities, research projects, medical college admission test performance, and extracurricular activities. We have combined the prescriptive style of most books of this type with detailed stories of how real people navigated their personal journeys to reach successful outcomes. This guide shares a broad range of perspectives on what it takes and means to be a physician. We are more convinced than ever that amongst applicants who have the academic credentials, those who seek mentors and network early within the profession, be it through family or friend circles, and those who learn from their mistakes are accepted earlier. This book will help you in that journey towards medical school acceptance and an exciting career in medicine! Jiayi Hu, MD Manveen Puri, MD, CCFP Sameer Masood, MD Aly Madhavji,CPA, CA, CMA, CIM
