Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1591, Giovanni Paolo Gallucci published his Della simmetria dei corpi humani, an Italian translation of Albrecht Dürer's Four Books on Human Proportion. While Dürer's treatise had been translated earlier in the sixteenth-century into French and Latin, it was Gallucci's Italian translation that endured in popularity as the most cited version of the text in later Baroque treatises, covering topics that were seen as central to arts education, connoisseurship, patronage, and the wider appreciation of the studia humanitatis in general. The text centres on the relationships between beauty and proportion, macrocosm and microcosm: relationships that were not only essential to the visual arts in the early modern era, but that cut across a range of disciplines - music, physiognomics and humoral readings, astronomy, astrology and cosmology, theology and philosophy, even mnemonics and poetry. In his version of the text, Gallucci expanded the educational potential of the treatise by adding a Preface, a Life of Dürer, and a Fifth Book providing a philosophical framework within which to interpret Dürer's previous sections. This translation is the first to make these original contributions by Gallucci accessible to an English-speaking audience. Gallucci's contributions illuminate the significance of symmetry and proportion in the contemporary education of the early modern era, informing our understanding of the intellectual history of this period, and the development of art theory and criticism. This is a valuable resource to early modern scholars and students alike, especially those specialising in history of art, philosophy, history of science, and poetry."--Publisher's website.

His drawings and studies reveal his interest in human proportions, anatomy, and perspective. Featured in this book are Dürer's drawings from the Albertina Museum's preeminent collection including family portraits, studies of animals and plants, and studies of the human body. This book showcases more than 100 of Dürer's drawings including Hare, Self Portrait at the Age of 13, and Melencolia I, along with paintings and prints. Featuring scholarly essays and beautifully reproduced works, this book shows the reader not only how important Dürer's drawings are to his own oeuvre, but also how he helped drawing become an appreciated medium in its own right.

As a means of elucidating the suspenseful interplay between Dürer and his contemporaries, the catalogue places Dürer’s works in their historical context and deliberately juxtaposes them with works by artists of the same period. The reader thus gains very direct insight into the superior technical mastery as well as the intensity of Dürer’s art."--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Artist of the Reformation by : Joyce McPherson
Download or read book Artist of the Reformation written by Joyce McPherson and published by Greenleaf Press (TN). This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of Albrecht Durer, one of the most influential artists of the Renaissance and Reformation. In addition to creating hundreds of engravings, woodcuts, drawings, and paintings, he wrote books on geometry, fortification, and human proportions. He explored the meaning of beauty in his art textbook, which was called Food for Young Artists. The Christian worldview which he brought to the field of art is still relevant today. Durer was counted among the leading intellectuals of the sixteenth century. He witnessed the coming Reformation and made the acquaintance of men such as Erasmus, Martin Luther, Melanchthon, and the Emperor Maximilian. Though he created works of art for wealthy patrons, he made his woodcuts affordable for ordinary people. In this way, Durer brought the Bible to a wide audience through his brilliant illustrations of the book of Revelation and other themes. This biography includes over twenty illustrations by Albrecht Durer, who wrote: "Painting is a useful art when it is of a godly sort and employed for holy edification." The life and art of Durer is food not only for young artists, but for all who seek beauty and truth. This book is written on a 5th-6th grade reading level, but younger children will enjoy having it read aloud to them."

Book Synopsis Human Proportions for Artists by : Avard Tennyson Fairbanks
Download or read book Human Proportions for Artists written by Avard Tennyson Fairbanks and published by Fairbanks Art and Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Proportions for Artists is a profusely illustrated reference book. It is intended for colege level students and serious artists. Avard Fairbanks made a proportion study of more than 100 measurements on each of 25 male and female adults. Detailed drawings were made illustrating these dimensions, including front and lateral fine features of the faces. Anatomical and anthropometric features are included and explained. These measurements are tabulated in life size and in different ratios from heroic, 3/2, to 1/12th life size in twelve columns. A presentation of relative proportions, using Leonardo da Vince's system, is included. This book is intended as an assistance for creating fine realistic and representational art, includ-portraits, from monumental to miniature sizes.
