Book Synopsis Communities and Caring by : Marjorie Mayo
Download or read book Communities and Caring written by Marjorie Mayo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1994-02-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities and Caring explores the theoretical background of social policy debates around the mixed economy of welfare in relation to community participation and community development. Whilst providing a critical analysis of New Right Theories, the book explores alternative approaches based on increasing accountability and democratic pluralism, within the framework of active community participation. Drawing upon different experiences both in Europe (including Eastern, as well as Western Europe), in the United States and in the Third World, Marjorie Mayo emphasises the importance of continuing public sector support and resources for community participation and development; without such underlying public sector support, community participation will be unable to meet community needs.

Distinctive features of the book include: two large digests of cases containing well over three hundred legal judgments and local ombudsman investigations; a chapter consisting of a practical checklist of questions - for managers, practitioners and users of services and their advisors - to check the lawfulness of policies, eligibility criteria and individual decisions; two overview, stand-alone chapters, one summarising the system, the other highlighting underlying themes and mechanisms; an inclusive approach embracing not only a range of both residential and non-residential care services, but also equipment and home adaptations, carers, direct payments, NHS services generally and continuing care, moving and handling law, legislation and guidance (old and new) underlying joint working and joint finance; avoidance of jargon.

Book Synopsis Complex Policy Planning by : Philip Haynes
Download or read book Complex Policy Planning written by Philip Haynes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book examines recent developments in the application of chaos and complexity theory to the applied social sciences and the implications for the government planning of social care services. The study argues that there are fundamental limitations to traditional government political and managerial planning structures. Chaos and complexity theory shows that the effects of time and space are critical aspects for planners to consider. Small changes in isolated social or individual factors can have larger scale effects on the future validity of a policy programme. In particular, rigid linear statistical calculations like the Government Standard Spending Assessment can undermine the ability of local authorities to make realistic plans. It is proposed that government political strategies and managerial methods of analysis need to better understand the complexity of information available to them. New political and institutional typologies are required if planning activity is to evolve to be of optimal social value.

Book Synopsis Caring and Coping by : Anthony Douglas
Download or read book Caring and Coping written by Anthony Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caring and Coping provides a clear and accessible explanation of the history, politics, management, funding and day-to-day work of the social services in Britain. Social Care now encompasses a wide range of increasingly specialised professions. Caring and Coping aims to improve the practitioner's (and the general public's) understanding not only of what these various professions do, but also what the legal, political, ethical and financial constraints are upon them. It succinctly addresses issues such as: the terms and effects of the Children Act and the Community Care Act the role of charities in the modern welfare state the role of management relationships with other agencies and the place of social work within the community Social services are so often portrayed in the media in a sensationalist way and this book counterbalances the hype by providing solid research and a more down-to-earth picture. It is an ideal introductory text for those training to be social workers.
