Download or read book Music Therapy in Palliative Care written by David Aldridge and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last decade music therapists have developed their work with people who have life-threatening illnesses and with those who are dying. This book presents some of that work from music therapists working in different approaches, in different countries, showing how valuable the inclusion of music therapy in palliative care has already proved to be. It is important for the dying, or those with terminal illness, that approaches are used which integrate the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of their being. The contributors to this book emphasize the importance of working not only with the patient but with the ward situation, friends and family members. By offering patients the chance to be creative they become something other than patients - they become expressive beings, and there is an intimacy in music therapy that is important for those who are suffering. Many of the contributors write in their own personal voice, providing a particular insight which will be valuable not only to other music therapists seeking to enrich their own ways of working, but to all those involved in caring for the sick and the dying. Contributors describe their work with both children and adults living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that music therapy, and songwriting in particular, have on the family members of hospice patients. Participants (N=8) were chosen from an available group of families who experienced songwriting in hospice care, whether the patient wrote all or part of a song, or the family wrote a song about the patient. Individual interviews were conducted with each participant, and each participant answered a series of questions regarding their hospice experience, their perception of their loved one's experience, their bereavement, and their experience with music therapy. Results showed that families found hospice overall to be a very positive experience, and that music therapy played a large role in all their perceptions of hospice care. All participants initiated discussion of music therapy and their family's song early in the interview, and all had many positive things to say about the music therapist, the song, and the meaning the song had for them and their family. In the majority of cases, the song written in music therapy was played at the memorial or funeral service. Other common themes noted were that for many, the song sent a message, embodied their loved one, or gave their loved one a sense of purpose. Many of the participants knew nothing or little of music therapy prior to their experience in hospice, and they all found it to be rewarding, and much more involved than they expected. Many of the participants still listen to the song, although a few indicated that it was difficult for them or that they could not listen to it yet. However, they all said that the song has a special meaning for them.

Book Synopsis Receptive Music Therapy In Palliative Care by : Cordula Dietrich
Download or read book Receptive Music Therapy In Palliative Care written by Cordula Dietrich and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-18 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are currently facing very challenging times. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, death and dying came very close to everybody, regardless of age or cultural background. Many people had to face the sudden, often unexpected passing of a dear person. Death breaks into people ́s lives, not asking, if they are prepared for it or if it is the right time. Many questions arise with this fact, and one of them often is the concern of how to die with dignity when the end of life is nearing. Dying in dignity is a concern of palliative care, which aims to care and not to cure, focusing on the life quality of a patient who is facing the last days of their life. Sound and music can play an important role in this process. This book is meant to encourage all those working in a palliative care team to consider music as a powerful tool in dealing with the challenges surrounding the end of life. The book will inspire the reader to examine the healing power of sound and music more deeply and serves as a useful support for students in palliative care approaches.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate Spanish language repertoire with Spanish-speaking patients, as well as specific techniques and challenges used by music therapists in the hospice setting. An electronic survey was sent out to music therapists via email and social media, whereby 17 music therapists completed the survey. The first section of the survey asked what Spanish language songs music therapists use most frequently in the following genres: Traditional/folk; Patriotic; Religious; Popular; Children0́9s; and Other. The second section of the survey consisted of approaches and techniques music therapists used in their practice with Spanish-speaking patients, as well as well as challenges they have encountered. The results of this study revealed a total of 49 songs used by music therapists. Results also indicated the music therapy intervention, 0́−singing for reminiscence,0́+ as their most frequently used. Regarding challenges faced when working with Spanish-speaking patients, language barrier was a common factor that music therapists faced. Further results are discussed in the paper. Download or read book Relationship Completion in Palliative Care Music Therapy written by Amy Clements-Cortés and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationships are significant in end-of-life care. Music therapy research and descriptive writing have built a body of knowledge supporting efficacy, enabling clinicians to implement evidence-based practices in their work. While relationships and relationship completion have been studied in end-of-life care, there are no written guidelines based on the best practices of relationship completion in palliative care music therapy. Thus, this is the impetus for this book.Relationship Completion in Palliative Care Music Therapy provides foundational information on relationships, relationship completion in end-of-life care, locations of care, and the scope of the continuum of music experiences. It is written by an international group of experts who collaborated over two years to develop this resource. With particular attention to the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusivity, intercultural competence and anti-oppressive practices are threaded throughout the text with a focus on music therapy techniques for the patient and caregivers. Step by step guidelines are provided for work with children and adults, which are divided into receptive, improvisational, compositional, and recreative categories. Further, a chapter on education and training guidelines is provided, alongside considerations in end-of-life care such as funeral planning, medical assistance in dying, dying alone, and bereavement. This text is a must-read for clinicians, educators and researchers working with the dying and bereaved.

Book Synopsis The Use of Lullabies in Hospice Music Therapy by : Samantha Lawrence
Download or read book The Use of Lullabies in Hospice Music Therapy written by Samantha Lawrence and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of lullabies as an intervention in hospice music therapy. A 15-question survey was electronically disseminated to board-certified music therapists (MT-BCs) with clinical experience working as music therapists in the hospice setting. Potential participants were located through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) database. A total of 86 participants responded to the survey, and the data from 82 of the participants was analyzed. Participants indicated that they use all four methods of music therapy and many different types of music experiences as a lullaby intervention in hospice music therapy. Hospice music therapists use lullaby interventions as indicated by a variety of patient/family needs. The most common needs were those related to comfort/relaxation (73.17%), pain/discomfort (60.98%), and anxiety (57.32%). These correlate to the most common intended outcomes of lullaby intervention in hospice music therapy, which are increasing relaxation/comfort (76.83%), decreased stress and anxiety for patients and/or families (74.39%), and decreasing pain/pain perception (37.80%). Participants indicated in an open-ended question their opinions about how using lullabies differs from other hospice music therapy interventions. Themes of how these interventions differ include comfort and relaxation, family and familiarity, and meeting specific patient needs. Results of this survey indicate that music therapists are using lullaby interventions in the hospice setting to meet the needs of hospice patients and their families." -- Page 5.
