Book excerpt: A dazzling epic that follows two very different families in Cleveland across generations, beginning with their patriarchs, who become irrevocably intertwined one fateful night A blistering dark comedy, Rafael Frumkin's The Comedown is a romp across America, from the Kent State shootings to protest marches in Chicago to the Florida Everglades, that explores delineating lines of race, class, religion, and time. Scrappy, street smart drug dealer Reggie Marshall has never liked the simpering addict Leland Bloom-Mittwoch, which doesn’t stop Leland from looking up to Reggie with puppy-esque devotion. But when a drug deal goes dramatically, tragically wrong and a suitcase (which may or may not contain a quarter of a million dollars) disappears, the two men and their families become hopelessly entangled. It’s a mistake that sets in motion a series of events that are odd, captivating, suspenseful, and ultimately inevitable. Both incendiary and earnest, The Comedown steadfastly catalogs the tangled messes the characters make of their lives, never losing sight of the beauty and power of each family member’s capacity for love, be it for money, drugs, or each other.

Book excerpt: After Queer Studies maps the literary influences that facilitated queer theory's academic emergence and charts the trajectories that continue to shape its continued evolution as a critical practice. It explores the interdisciplinary origins of queer studies and argues for the prominent role that literary studies has played in establishing the concepts, methods, and questions of contemporary queer theory. It shows how queer studies has had an impact on many trending concerns in literary studies, such as the affective turn, the question of the subject, and the significance of social categories like race, class, and sexual differences. Bridging between queer studies' legacies and its horizons, this collection initiates new discussion on the irreducible changes that queer studies has introduced in the concepts, methods, and modes of literary interpretation and cultural practices.

This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD. thesis reports eight studies into the determinants of ecstasy use behaviours. Although all prior quantitative studies into ecstasy use determinants have examined the generic behavioural category 'using ecstasy', these studies may not be able to inform the development of interventions aiming to prevent ecstasy use or to promote cessation. The studies reported in this thesis indicate that the key determinants of 'using ecstasy' are not also the key determinants of 'trying out ecstasy' and 'ceasing ecstasy use'. Furthermore, ecstasy use cessation usually seems to be prompted by life style changes (e.g. job/work, relationships, losing interest in the dance scene), rather than by fear of ecstasy's health effects. This means that health promotion efforts would do better to adopt a harm reduction approach, rather than to focus on abstinence. The current thesis reports the studies on which these conclusions are based, and the first study into the determinants of a harm reduction strategy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Affinitive Life and, in conjunction, The Book of Life Part 2 are mainly about life on the earth concerning hate as an affinitive life of unprovoked attacks by raw signals of hate uninvited. As a consequence of a shock attack of trauma, terror, or horror, respectively, in your conscious mind at the threshold level, you are thereby forced to run into your subconscious mind of darkness just below the threshold of consciousness of light for psychological cover, safety, or protection characterized by your emotions. In conjunction, you are involuntarily forced to express a hate gene that is a bad gene that becomes a bad spirit principal part grudge, hate, or hatchet of hatred, and its bad spirit constituent part grudge, hate, or hatchet of hatred. For that reason, the name of this book is The Book of Affinitive Life and, in conjunction, the Book of Life. It is The Book of Affinitive Life to the Natural Side of Life, and the Book of Life to the Spirit Side of Life. It is called The Book of Affinitive Life as it refers to and relates to the natural side of life first, and then to the same degree, it relates to the spirit side of life second, which characterizes the Book of Life. Affinitive life is not one life you live but rather many individual lives as an integral part of your natural life by its acquired spirit grafted into your natural spirit. By means of which, addictive life is distinguished as not having roots in your natural spirit, and for that reason, it is just a natural process of cleanliness of addiction out of the brain as genotypic addiction in response to phenotypic addiction. Your spiritual life is no exception to the rule of the process of affinitive lives, because it too, like affinitive life, is an integral part of your natural life. On the contrary, your spiritual life centers on spiritual love for the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, whereas affinitive life of invited signals from a particular person, place, thing, activity, event experienced in the environment centers on affinitive love for whom or what it derived. This is what The Book of Affinitive Life and, in conjunction, The Book of Life Part 1 is all about. Otherwise, affinitive life centers on hatred of an unprovoked attack by a raw signal of hate uninvited from a particular person, place, thing, activity, or event experienced or witnessed. The Book of Affinitive Life Part 2 brings to light the impact affinitive lives of hatred have on our natural life and society in general as a hate spirit. Its only aim is violence, death, and/or destruction against you and/ or whom or what your principal part bad spirit hatred is for. Therefore, nature's principal remedy for hatred is to bury your entire bad spirit principal part grudge or hatred. All affinitive lives are lived out optionally in conjunction with natural life as an integral part, as a habitual lifestyle or habit in natural life of affinitive life. This book is to show you how hate functions in your life as a living spirit in response to Satan the devil as the prince of the air influences on it and homogeneous people, places, things, activities, or events experienced or witnessed. So as to evoke awareness in you and thereby give you a conscious effect in your subconscious mind to remind you of your unprovoked attack and by which stir up hatred within you.

As the frontman of Bring Me the Horizon, one of the most polarising bands to emerge from the UK rock scene, he is the commander-in-chief of a band as uncompromising as it is unpredictable, and has led his comrades in a daring assault on the mainstream. But the band has been the source of much controversy to match its acclaim. In just over a decade they have endured drug addiction, brushes with the law, press hostility and even onstage assaults. But nothing has slowed their ascent from underground notoriety to the upper reaches of superstardom. Behind the noise, there is a restless creative energy which has seen Bring Me the Horizon take huge strides from album to album. This book tells their story for the first time, including their first steps into the hardcore scene of Sheffield, emerging from and then outgrowing the so-called 'deathcore' movement and the creation of their defining records. This is how Bring Me the Horizon took on the world and came out on top. Throw me to the Wolves

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note that this is the complete and final version of The Drug Users Bible. People are dying because of ignorance. They are dying because unremitting propaganda is denying them vital safety information. They are dying because legislators and the media are censoring the science, and are ruthlessly pushing an ideological agenda instead. They are dying because the first casualty of war is truth, and the war on drugs is no different. This book makes a significant contribution in confronting this harrowing and tragic narrative. Over a 12 year period the author of this book self-administered over 180 psychoactive substances; both chemicals and plants. For each he recorded the life-sensitive safety data, including the anticipated onset times, the common threshold doses, the routes of administration, and the expected duration of the experience. In addition, for every compound he also produced a trip report, detailing the qualitative experience itself. This delivered another invaluable insight, enabling, for example, an objective assessment of the extent of any loss of judgement and self-control. This is a substantial body of work, embracing a wealth of direct support material, including addiction/overdose advice, relative harm tables, and legal briefings. Its contents also extend to cover aspects such as drug tourism, psychedelic exploration and drug related culture. It is crammed with detailed reference data, and even includes its own drug dictionary. The Drug Users Bible is a unique and unprecedented volume of encyclopaedic research, embracing the full extent of the drugscape. Its objective is to provide, without fear or compromise, core and critical information to support the health, welfare and well-being of the 250 million people in the world who use drugs. The book itself is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of photographs, taken by the author himself. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS The first section comprises a comprehensive introduction to crucial drug concepts and practices. This, in itself, is indispensable prior-reading for anyone who chooses to use a psychoactive substance. It contains, for example, a detailed risk mitigation procedure: 'The 10 Commandments of Safer Drug Use'. This presents a generic set of easily understood steps to aid personal safety, inclusive of an illustrated explanation of how to identity test the substances themselves. THE PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS The full gamut of psychoactive chemicals and botanicals is meticulously covered. Well known examples include heroin, cannabis, xanax, kratom, cocaine, DMT, methamphetamine, ketamine, LSD, ayahuasca, alcohol, and MDMA. Lesser known examples include 4-ho-met, calea, ephenidine, mad honey, mapacho, a-PHP, and yohimbe. The scope also extends well beyond the most common categories, of psychedelics, stimulants, depressants and dissociatives. Included, for example, are dream herbs and nootropics. The investigation of psychoactivity was unbounded and unfettered. THE WORLDSCAPE Drug use does not occur in a vacuum, so the final section considers the wider context, with in-depth examination of everything from travel to the horrors of the war on drugs. Facts, science and genuine statistics replace the myths, fabrications and propaganda of the prevailing social order, again with welfare and safety emphasized. EDUCATION SAVES LIVES Education underpins harm reduction, and is the primary driver throughout. Indeed, personal safety is the first and last message, and guides the entire narrative. This is a book for drug users and their families. It is a book which will help to avert tragedy. It is a book which will save lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning tale of suburbia's darker underbelly by the critically acclaimed author of I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone, Stephanie Keuhnert. Ballads are the kind of songs that Kara McNaughton likes best. Not the clichéd ones where a diva hits her dramatic high note or a rock band tones it down a couple of notches for the ladies, but the true ballads: the punk rocker or the country crooner reminding their listeners of the numerous ways to screw things up. In high school, Kara helped maintain the "Stories of Suburbia" notebook, which contained newspaper articles about bizarre, tragic events from suburbs all over America, and personal vignettes that Kara dubbed "ballads" written by her friends in Oak Park, just outside of Chicago. But Kara never wrote her own ballad. Before she could figure out what her song was about, she left town suddenly at the end of her junior year. Now, four years later, Kara returns to her hometown to face the music, needing to revisit the disastrous events that led to her leaving, in order to move on with her life. Intensely powerful and utterly engaging, Ballads of Suburbia explores the heartbreaking moments when life changes unexpectedly, and reveals the consequences of being forced to grow up too soon.
