Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Combined Treatment in Diseases of the Eye That which is at the present time giving to the Medical Profession such an increased hold upon the confidence of the public, and causes its expressed opinion to have so much weight, is the great advancement made of late years in our power of curing disease. For a long time it has been the custom of our teachers to devote themselves to the study of the symptoms, pathology, diagnosis, &c., of disease, and to give to the treatment, that with which the people are the most con cerned, a superficial notice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of Diseases of the Eye IN presenting Dr. Hanke's manual of diseases of the eye to English-speaking readers the translators feel that no apology is required. It is hoped that it may supply to the student and general practitioner a somewhat full, yet condensed summary of modern ocular therapeutics, together with some notes on matters of importance in diagnosis and differential diagnosis. The book provides a Mum of the methods adopted in Professor Fuchs's Clinic at Vienna, and it is therefore behaved that ophthalmic surgeons will also find it of interest and utility. Numerous illustrations have been introduced to better elucidate the conditions and Operations described, and such as are not original have been selected from the standard works on ophthalmology, as well illustrating the points presented Colored lithographs from the admirable atlas of Sichel and others have been added in the endeavor to more fully depict the diseases described and thus enable the Student or practitioner to readily diagnose the various affections when presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye: And Their Treatment The fifth edition of this book was issued in January, 1895, and has been for some months out of print. In this edition the pages in the first chapter of former editions on Some Elementary Optics have been omitted to make room in the book for other matter. After all, it may be reasonably expected that the student will bring with him to the study of eye disease, not only a good knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, but also that acquaintance with optical laws which is required for the proper understanding of the refraction and accommodation of the eye, and of the theory of the ophthalmoscope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye: Their Pathology and Treatment The rapid advancement of medicine during the present century has rendered it impossible to acquire a proper knowledge of its different departments, during the brief time usually allotted by students to its study. We have deemed it expedient, therefore, to present this branch in a condensed form; at the same time trying to preserve whatever has been actually acquired to the science of ophthalmology. The book is divided into two parts: the first includes the pathology and treatment of eye-diseases; and the second, the operative surgery of the eye. The practical portions of the work are given with as much detail as possible, and from the experience of the author; and it is hoped they will prove a useful guide, not alone to those entering this interesting department of medicine, but also to the busy practitioner, who finds himself unable to peruse the more elaborate treatises on this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases and Injuries of the Eye: With Their Medical and Surgical Treatment Those who remember the last edition of this work, which was published in 1885, will scarcely recognise it in its new dress. The great success that attended former editions decided me to make an attempt to place it once more on a sound basis. Much care and labour has been taken to make the work as practical as possible. It was chiefly owing to the attention paid to the clinical features, and to the treatment of the various eye diseases, that the book obtained its former popularity; and to these portions, and especially to treatment, a much larger space has been allotted than is usually the case. At the same time, much more attention has been paid to the anatomical, pathological, and theoretical aspects, and, as a consequence, and owing partly to the great strides made of late years in ophthalmic surgery, the book has greatly increased in size. My endeavour has been, briefly, to present a work which will serve not only for the student of Ophthalmology, but will also prove useful as a book of reference for the general practitioner, who is more concerned with the practical relief of disease than with the theory of it. I can only hope that, in some measure at least, this attempt has been successful, and if so, the labour which has occupied the greater part of the leisure time of three years will be amply rewarded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Eye IN preparing this volume it has been the design of the author to produce a treatise on ophthalmology that will enable the undergraduate in medicine to obtain a sufficiently comprehensive and trustworthy knowledge of the subject, a book to which the practitioner of medicine may refer for information regarding questions concerning the eye, and also a book which may be of use to the specialist in ophthalmology. The work includes a description of the embryology and anatomy Of the eye and the principles of optics, as well as the clinical aspects Of the subject, as, in the opinion of the author, a knowledge of these is necessary to a full understanding of the pathological processes discussed, and it is convenient to have them embodied in one volume. As little theory as possible has been given, and this only when facts were not sufficient to explain the phenomena described. The endeavor has been made to present the subject in as direct a manner as possible, describing conditions and accepted methods of treatment as briefly as is compatible with a full exposition of each topic. Due weight has been given to recent developments in Ophthalmology, including the role Of microorganisms. The application of modern methods of treatment in affections of the eye has been fully considered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A "stunning achievement" that remains a "classic for our generation." (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score). Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. Hailed by the New York Times as "one of the most important psychiatry works to be published since Freud," Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed.
