Book Synopsis The Colour Divine by : Devdutt Pattanaik
Download or read book The Colour Divine written by Devdutt Pattanaik and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian tradition of colour has two branches–the vairagya (the ascetic) which keeps things simple, and the grihastha (the householder) which features a riot of colours to rival the rainbow. Colours signify well-being, prosperity and good luck. Perhaps that’s why Indian gods are steeped in a tradition of colour symbolism. Why is Krishna as blue as the sky, and Shiva the grey of ashes? Why do Laxmi and Durga wear bold red saris while Saraswati wears white? Why is black considered inauspicious by some, but the colour of Kali Ma? Walk through the many shades of meaning in this short, sweet read from Devlok.

Download or read book Approaching the Divine written by Margaret Loewen Reimer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching the Divine is a handbook on signs and symbols in the Christian tradition, written from a Mennonite perspective. It provides a window into the meaning behind liturgical practices and art forms developed by the church through the ages. It also explores the seasons of the church year and observances related to special "Holy Days" in the Christian tradition. Included is a section on more universal signs and tokens, such as numbers and shapes, and some "popular"expressions of faith. The last section draws on articles and sermons related to the subject of symbols and rituals in the Christian tradition. The book is based on a column entitled "Signs and Symbols" that appeared in the Mennonite Reporter and later Canadian Mennonite. That material has been expanded and updated for this book, with an introduction to the meaning of symbols within the life of the church and a bibliography of sources and suggestions for further reading. The book is intended as a resource to help individuals and congregations explore the meaning of worship and its artistic expressions. It is written with the hope that it will inspire a greater appreciation for the richness of the Christian tradition and stimulate thinking.

Download or read book The Divine written by Boaz Lavie and published by First Second. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark's out of the military, these days, with his boring, safe civilian job doing explosives consulting. But you never really get away from war. So it feels inevitable when his old army buddy Jason comes calling, with a lucrative military contract for a mining job in an obscure South-East Asian country called Quanlom. They'll have to operate under the radar-Quanlom is being torn apart by civil war, and the US military isn't strictly supposed to be there. With no career prospects and a baby on the way, Mark finds himself making the worst mistake of his life and signing on with Jason. What awaits him in Quanlom is going to change everything. What awaits him in Quanlom is weirdness of the highest order: a civil war led by ten-year-old twins wielding something that looks a lot like magic, leading an army of warriors who look a lot like gods. What awaits him in Quanlom is an actual goddamn dragon. From world-renowned artists Asaf and Tomer Hanuka (twins, whose magic powers are strictly confined to pen and paper) and Boaz Lavie, The Divine is a fast-paced, brutal, and breathlessly beautiful portrait of a world where ancient powers vie with modern warfare and nobody escapes unscathed.

Book Synopsis Gregory of Nyssa's Tabernacle Imagery in Its Jewish and Christian Contexts by : Ann Conway-Jones
Download or read book Gregory of Nyssa's Tabernacle Imagery in Its Jewish and Christian Contexts written by Ann Conway-Jones and published by Oxford Early Christian Studies. This book was released on 2014 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intergrating patristics and early Jewish mysticism, this book examines Greogry of Nyssa's tabernacle imagery, as found in Life of Moses 2. 170-201. Previous scholarship has often focused on Gregory's interpretation of the darkness on Mount Sinai as divine incomprehensibility. However, true to Exodus, Gregory continues with Moses's vision of the tabernacle "not made with hands" received within that darkness. This innovative methodology of heuristic comparison doesn't strive to prove influence, but to use heavenly ascent textsas a foil, in order to shed new light on Gregory's imagery. Ann Conway-Jones presents a well-rounded, nuanced understanding of Gregory's exegesis, in which mysticism, theology, and politics are intertwined. Heavenly ascent texts use descriptions of religious experience to claim authoritative knowledge. For Gregory, the high point of Moses's ascent into the darkness of Mount Sinai is the mystery of Christian doctrine. The heavenly tabernacle is a type of the heavenly Christ. This mystery is beyond intellectual comprehension, it can only be grasped by faith; and only the select few, destined for positions of responsibility, should even attempt to do so.
