Book excerpt: Sir Seretse Khama, the first President of Botswana and heir apparent to the kingship of the Bangwato people, brought independence and great prosperity to his nation after colonial rule. But for six long years from 1950, Seretse had been forced into exile in England, banned from his own country. His crime? To fall in love and marry a young, white English girl, Ruth Williams. Delving into newly released records, Susan Williams tells Seretse and Ruth's story - a shocking account of how the British Government conspired with apartheid South Africa to prevent the mixed-race royal couple returning home. But it is also an inspiring, triumphant tale of hope, courage and true love as with tenacity and great dignity Seretse and Ruth and the Bangwato people ovecome prejudice in their fight for justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Struggle and Service of My People describes the growing up and education of a boy in the Anglo Egyptian Sudan in a missionary dominated environment. This memoir explains the economic political educational policies of the Anglo Egyptian Sudan, dominated by the British, which marginalized the South Sudanese. Through Hilary Paul Logali’s story one can see the awakening up of the South Sudanese to political realities only to find out that they have been railroaded, fait accompli, into a country without their knowledge and consultation. It shows the struggle of the Southerners as the underdogs in the struggle for a breathing space in Sudan with more mature, educated, sophisticated and dominant Northern Sudanese. You can however see how the new and better educated South Sudanese began to articulate Southern aspirations better than their parents. This political memoir explains the effects of coups and military rule as well as one party systems, which were in the vogue in Africa in those years, resulting in the stifling of democracy. It also demonstrates the scourge and the inimical effect of tribalism as an impediment to political development which is also rampant in many parts of Africa. You also will see the negative effect of political Islam in the country, which eventually drove the Sudan into the bad books of the international community and especially of the United States. Through all this can be seen the character of a person, Hilary Paul Logali, the Southern nationalist who sacrificed his education and career for the sake of the political service he undertook for his people.

For nearly 100 years, The Crisis has been the magazine of opinion and thought leaders, decision makers, peacemakers and justice seekers. It has chronicled, informed, educated, entertained and, in many instances, set the economic, political and social agenda for our nation and its multi-ethnic citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1930s and moving into the post millennium, Newton provides a historical analysis of policies invoked, and practices undertaken as the Service attempted to assist white Britons in understanding the impact of African-Caribbeans, and their assimilation into constructs of Britishness. Management soon approved talks and scientific studies as a means of examining racial tensions, as ITV challenged the discourses of British broadcasting. Soon, BBC2 began broadcasting; and more issues of race appeared on the screens, each reflecting sometimes comedic, somewhat dystopic, often problematic circumstances of integration. In the years that followed however, social tensions such as the Nottingham and Notting Hill riots led to transmissions that included a series of news specials on Britain’s Colour Bar, and docudramas such as A Man From the Sun that attempted to frame the immigrant experience for British television audiences, but from the African-Caribbean point of view. Subsequent chapters include an extensive analysis of television programming, along with personal interviews. Topics include current representations of race, the future of British television, and its impact upon multiethnic audiences. Also detailed are the efforts of black Britons working within the British media as employees of the BBC, writers, producers and actors.

An intimate history of Africa and its ancient civilizations, the book opposed the stereotyped and often racist histories of Africa. Today, a half century after its initial publication, African Glory still provides a vivid and dynamic connection to the African past.
