Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Field Report of the United States Geological Survey of Colorado and New Mexico, 1869 Sir: In accordance with your instructions dated Washington, April 1, 1869, I have the honor to transmit my preliminary field report of the United States geological survey of Colorado and New Mexico, conducted by me, under your direction, during the past season. A portion of your instructions is as follows: "You will proceed to the field of your labors as soon as the necessary arrangements can be made and the season will permit, and your attention will be especially directed to the geological, mineralogical and agricultural resources of the Territories herein designated; you will be required to ascertain the age, order of succession, relative position, dip, and comparative thickness of the different strata and geological formations, and examine with care all the beds, veins, and other deposits, of ores, coals, clays, marls, peat, and other mineral substances, as well as the fossil remains of the different formations; and you will also make full collections in geology, mineralogy, and paleontology, to illustrate your notes taken in the field." In accordance with the above instructions I proceeded to Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory, where my preparations and outfit were made. My assistants were selected as follows: 1. James Stevenson, managing director and general assistant. 2. Henry W. Elliott, artist. 3. Rev. Cyrus Thomas, entomologist and botanist. 4. Persifer Frazer, jr., mining engineer and metallurgist. 5. E. C. Carrington, jr., zoologist. 6. B. H. Cheever, jr., general assistant. Five men were also employed, three of them as teamsters, one as laborer, and the other one as cook. As soon as my preparations were completed, my field labors commenced, June 29, at Cheyenne. Limited somewhat as to time and means, I arranged my plans so as to cover as much ground as possible and secure the greatest amount of geological information. On the plains the geological structure is very simple, and frequently over large areas the basis rocks are concealed by superficial deposits. It seemed best, therefore, to make my examinations southward along the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains for the purpose of studying the upheaved ridges, or "hog backs," as they are called in this country. These ridges afford peculiar facilities for working out the geological structure of the country. Indeed, they are like the pages of an open book upon which the geologist can read what the Creator has written upon each formation known in the country from the granite mass that forms the nucleus of the loftiest mountain range to the most recent tertiary formation inclusive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colorado Plateau Region Except for the Archean and Algonkian formations at the bottom of the Grand Canyon the Colorado Plateau province is essentially a region of sedimentary rocks - a pile of Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Tertiary strata, chiefly sandstone, more than 10 000 feet (3, 050 meters) thick and exposed over an area exceed ing square miles (388, 500 square kilometers). The sedimentary beds of the region are representatives of broadly defined stratigraphic groups that extend northward in Utah to the Uinta (you-in' tah) Mountains, eastward into Colorado and New Mexico, southward to central Arizona, and westward beyond the utah-nevada boundary line. Like the Permian (kaibab) limestone that now constitutes the surface rock on both sides of the Grand Canyon, beds of Triassic, Jurassic, and Tertiary age, similar to those exposed in the cliffs of the High Plateaus and in buttes and mesas in northern Arizona, are believed to have been once continuous across the Colorado, providing a cover twice as thick as the present canyon is deep. The stratigraphic section exposed reveals evidence of extended intervals of earth movements and erosion. In the walls of the Grand Canyon the Algonkian beds rest on the eroded surface of a mountain range and are unconformably overlain by the Cambrian; the Ordovician and Silurian are lacking, the Devonian is present in patches only, and ancient surfaces of erosion are represented by unconformities at the base of the Redwall (mississippian) and the base and top of the Supai (permian). In the rocks that form the plateaus north and south of the Colorado there are unconformities of regional significance be tween the Kaibab (permian) and the Moenkopi (mo-en ko 'pi) (triassic), between the Moenkopi and the Shinarump (shin air 'ump) (triassic), and between the Cretaceous and the Tertiary, besides breaks that indicate shorter lapses between other formations. The Colorado Plateau is a broadly elevated region in the southern part of the Western Interior of the United States that has exceptionally fine exposures of upper Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic rocks. The quality of exposures is a product of regional uplift in the middle and late Tertiary that caused rapid erosion and deep canyon incision in a semi-arid to arid climate. The structure of the Plateau consists of broad basins, uplifts, and platforms locally bordered by monoclines. Although elevated in Tertiary time, the Plateau region was a distinct crustal block by the beginning of Mesozoic time when it was largely surrounded by tectonically distinct regions. Upper Paleozoic to Cenozoic strata contain the record of marine and continental sedimentologic processes complicated in varying degrees by the interplay between sea-level changes and tectonism, both within the Plateau region and in bordering regions. The field excursion will provide an opportunity to see the spectacular geologic scenery of the Colorado Plateau and to discuss the regional sedimentologic and structural history.
