Download or read book The Governor and the Colonel written by Don Carleton and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 1033 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William P. “Will” Hobby Sr. and Oveta Culp Hobby were one of the most influential couples in Texas history. Both were major public figures, with Will serving as governor of Texas and Oveta as the first commander of the Women’s Army Corps and later as the second woman to serve in a presidential cabinet. Together, they built a pioneering media empire centered on the Houston Post and their broadcast properties, and they played a significant role in the transformation of Houston into the fourth largest city in the United States. Don Carleton’s dual biography details their personal and professional relationship—defined by a shared dedication to public service—and the important roles they each played in local, state, and national events throughout the twentieth century. This deeply researched book not only details this historically significant partnership, but also explores the close relationships between the Hobbys and key figures in twentieth-century history, from Texas legends such as LBJ, Sam Rayburn, and Jesse Jones, to national icons, including the Roosevelts, President Eisenhower, and the Rockefellers. Carleton's chronicle reveals the undeniable impact of the Hobbys on journalistic and political history in the United States.

Download or read book Exit the Colonel written by Ethan Chorin and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Exit the Colonel, Ethan Chorin, a longtime Middle East scholar and one of the first American diplomats posted to Libya after the lifting of international sanctions, goes well beyond recent reporting on the Arab Spring to link the Libyan uprising to a flawed reform process, egregious human rights abuses, regional disparities, and inconsistent stories spun by Libya and the West to justify the Gaddafi regime's "rehabilitation." Exit the Colonel is based upon extensive interviews with senior US, EU, and Libyan officials, and with rebels and loyalists; a deep reading of local and international media; and significant on-the-ground experience pre- and post-revolution. The book provides rare and often startling glimpses into the strategies and machinations that brought Gaddafi in from the cold, while encouraging ordinary Libyans to "break the barrier of fear." Chorin also assesses the possibilities and perils for Libya going forward, politically and economically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • “Colonel Roosevelt is compelling reading, and [Edmund] Morris is a brilliant biographer who practices his art at the highest level. . . . A moving, beautifully rendered account.”—Fred Kaplan, The Washington Post This biography by Edmund Morris, the Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning author of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex, marks the completion of a trilogy sure to stand as definitive. Of all our great presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is the only one whose greatness increased out of office. What other president has written forty books, hunted lions, founded a third political party, survived an assassin’s bullet, and explored an unknown river longer than the Rhine? Packed with more adventure, variety, drama, humor, and tragedy than a big novel, yet documented down to the smallest fact, this masterwork recounts the last decade of perhaps the most amazing life in American history. “Hair-raising . . . awe-inspiring . . . a worthy close to a trilogy sure to be regarded as one of the best studies not just of any president, but of any American.”—San Francisco Chronicle
Book Synopsis Colonel Sanders and the American Dream by : Josh Ozersky
Download or read book Colonel Sanders and the American Dream written by Josh Ozersky and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The James Beard Award–winning food writer serves up “a quirky and rewarding exploration of a ‘very real time, place, product, and person’” (TriQuarterly). Among the most recognizable corporate icons, only one was ever a real person: Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken/KFC. From a 1930s roadside café in Corbin, Kentucky, Harland Sanders launched a fried chicken business that now circles the globe, serving “finger lickin’ good” chicken to more than twelve million people every day. But to get there, he had to give up control of his company and even his own image, becoming a mere symbol to people today who don’t know that Colonel Sanders was a very real human being. This book tells his story of a dirt-poor striver with unlimited ambition who personified the American Dream. Acclaimed cultural historian Josh Ozersky defines the American Dream as being able to transcend your roots and create yourself as you see fit. Harland Sanders did exactly that. At the age of sixty-five—after failed jobs and misfortune—he packed his car with a pressure cooker and his secret blend of eleven herbs and spices and began peddling the recipe for “Colonel Sanders’ Kentucky Fried Chicken” to small-town diners. Ozersky traces the rise of Kentucky Fried Chicken from this unlikely beginning, telling the dramatic story of Sanders’ self-transformation into “The Colonel,” his truculent relationship with KFC management as their often-disregarded goodwill ambassador, and his equally turbulent afterlife as the world’s most recognizable commercial icon. “Nobody finishing this book will look at their local KFC in the same way again.” —The National

Book Synopsis Battles And Victories Of Allen Allensworth, A.M., Ph.D., Lieutenant-Colonel, Retired, U.S. Army [Illustrated Edition] by : Charles Alexander
Download or read book Battles And Victories Of Allen Allensworth, A.M., Ph.D., Lieutenant-Colonel, Retired, U.S. Army [Illustrated Edition] written by Charles Alexander and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The story of Allen Allensworth is one of true strength and courage in adversity to become the first African-American to attain the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Army; this was not his only singular distinction by any means. Born into slavery, he escaped by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers and later served two years in the Navy. Having studied theology, he was ordained as a minister, and in 1886 he gained an appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers and served in the US Army for the next 20 years. He was also notable for founding the township of Allensworth, California in 1908; it was intended as an all-black community to be free of the racial discrimination faced by so many at the turn of the 20th century. Although the town failed due to the environmental conditions that surrounded its founding, the remains are preserved as the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. A fascinating biography of an influential and pioneering African-American.
