Book excerpt: The Collie is a breed of dog that originates from Scotland, primarily from the Highland regions. The breed's name has two potential points of origin. Some historians believe that the name 'Collie' is based upon the Anglo-Saxon word 'coll' which means black. Other historians believe that the breeds name is based upon the Scottish black-faced sheep named 'Colley, ' as the Collie was used to guard these sheep on a regular basis. However most historians agree that the Collie is probably descended from breeds of dog introduced to the United Kingdom by Roman conquerors almost two thousand years ago! Traditionally the Collie was predominately black coated and was much closer in size and shape to today's Border Collie. The breed traditionally had no standardized appearance due to it being bred for intelligence, herding and working ability rather than looks. The breed was widely employed as a herding dog and was known to herd, and guard, cattle, pigs, sheep and goats on a regular basis. In the 1860's Queen Victoria of England fell in love with the good natured temperament and appearance of the Collie and introduced them into English culture, where the breed was known as the 'Scottish Sheep-Dog.' The Collie comes in two potential coat variants: rough and smooth. The rough coated variant has a long, abundant and straight outer coat that is rough to the touch and a soft, thick and furry undercoat. The smooth coat variant has a shorter, dense and flat outercoat and a thick undercoat. The breed's coat comes in four colors: tricolor (black with white and tan markings), white, blue merle (silvery blue and black) and sable (which is commonly known as the 'Lassie' coat coloration). As a whole the breed is known to be incredibly good natured, affectionate and gentle. The Collie thrives in a household environment and enjoys spending time with its family unit. The Collie is also incredibly good around children as they are both protective and playful. The Collie is highly intelligent and is known to be willing to risk its own wellbeing to protect members of its family. The breed was originally developed to be capable of herding livestock, especially sheep, and to be highly intelligent and obedient. The Border Collie is a descends from the Landrace collies that originate from the British Isles. The Border Collie has a double coat, soft dark eyes, a well-defined stop and a athletically built body. The breeds double coat can come in two texture variations: smooth and rough. The rough coat variation is of a medium to long length and has feathering on the dog's legs, chest and belly. The smooth coat variation is short all over and has minimal feathering. The breed will most commonly have a black coat with white patches on its face, neck, feet, legs and tail. However it is not uncommon to find Border Collies with bicolored, tricolored, merle or solid coat colorations. As a whole, the Border Collie is known to be a intelligent, loyal and affectionate breed. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Gentle Giant, ' the 'Gentle Lion, ' and as simply the 'Leo.' The Leonberger's name is derived from the city of Leonberg which is in the Baden-Wurttemberg region of Germany. The Leonberger is believed to have come into existence in the mid-1850s when a Landseer Newfoundland was mixed with a Saint Bernard, and later a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Traditionally the Leonberger has a long white coat, which was considered very fashionable at the time. The modern Leonberger has a much darker coat and will usually have a black mask covering most of its face and muzzle. The breed's numbers suffered dramatically during World War I and World War II as most of the Leonberger breeders were killed, fled Germany or enrolled in the military. During the World Wars, the Leonberger was mainly used to pull carts full of ammunition to and from the front line. Traditionally the Leonberger breed was employed as a general purpose farm dog or a guard dog. The Leonberger has a very unique water-resistant double coat on its body and very short fine hairs on its muzzle and limbs. The breed's durable outer coat is relatively straight and lies flat to the dog's body. Interestingly the Leonberger is a dimorphic breed as it possesses either a strongly masculine or elegantly feminine form, which allows the breed's gender to be immediately discernible.
