Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The College Man and the College Woman Now that we have about sixty thousand men and thirty thousand women in the colleges of the United States, the College Man and the College Woman deserve sympathetic interpretation and intelligent appreciation. To reveal to themselves and to the world these college men and women as they are, and as they are capable of becoming, is the purpose of this book. It deals with the personal, ethical, spiritual side of college life, and with organization and administration only incidentally. It presents as the best spiritual drink for college youth a blend of Greek sanity and Christian service. Nearly everything in it has been presented to college audiences at Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania, Syracuse, Chicago, Northwestern, Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Williams, Haverford, Colgate, Mount Holyoke, Rockford, Smith, Vassar, or Wellesley. Nearly all of it has been printed in "The Atlantic Monthly," "Scribner's Magazine," "The Educational Review," "The International Monthly," "The Outlook," Crowell's "What is Worth While" Series, or pamphlets published by colleges to which the addresses were delivered. Severe criticism, public and private, and a formal protest in 1882 from the alumnae in Boston had stimulated investigation and modification. Attendance was fall ing Off and Vassar was not holding her own with other colleges for women. Whether this loss was due to conservatism within the college or to the attraction Of the other colleges, the alumnae did not know, but they were sure the condition could be relieved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of the Woman's College, Duke University, 1930-1972 The idea that a book of this nature should be written came to me through my own inability to answer the frequent questions posed by library patrons about various art objects in the library or about why the library has the particular types of books that make up its collection. My usual response was to ask Miss Harrison, whose first-hand knowledge goes back to the beginning of the Woman's College Library in 1930, but the information that she supplied always made me wish to know more. From the time that the Woman's College at Duke ceased to exist in 1972, I frequently mentioned that someone should write a history of the Woman's College Library. When I made that comment to Professor Robert Durden in December 1975, he suggested that I undertake the project. So, I began the research with my goal to complete the book by the summer of 1978 in order to honor Miss Harrison at the time of her retirement. The research for this book has been extremely rewarding. Now I know the answers to most questions about the library asked by patrons and visitors, as well as having a better knowledge of the history of Duke University in general. I hope that those who read this book also will appreciate learning about some of the interesting events in the history of this one facet of Duke University. For Girls Thus all unconsciously does the college girl pass happily through the four years of college life; and at its close she finds herself suddenly confronted with blank nothingness, especially if she is the daughter of parents in easy circum stances, and lives outside of the large cities. Were the secrets of hearts revealed, it could surely be shown, that in the case of thousands of educated girls and women, not only of our own day, but of all the years that have gone by since anything worthy the name of a liberal education was afforded to women, the first year or years after leaving school or college were years of deep and perplexing unhappiness.
