Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.K. Chesterton was a master essayist. But reading his essays is not just an exercise in studying a literary form at its finest, it is an encounter with timeless truths that jump off the page as fresh and powerful as the day they were written. The only problem with Chesterton's essays is that there are too many of them. Over five thousand! For most GKC readers it is not even possible to know where to start or how to begin to approach them. So three of the world's leading authorities on Chesterton - Dale Ahlquist, Joseph Pearce, Aidan Mackey - have joined together to select the "best" Chesterton essays, a collection that will be appreciated by both the newcomer and the seasoned student of this great 20th century man of letters. The variety of topics are astounding: barbarians, architects, mystics, ghosts, fireworks, rain, juries, gargoyles and much more. Plus a look at Shakespeare, Dickens, Jane Austen, George MacDonald, T.S. Eliot, and the Bible. All in that inimitable, formidable but always quotable style of GKC. Even more astounding than the variety is the continuity of Chesterton's thought that ties everything together. A veritable feast for the mind and heart. While some of the essays in this volume may be familiar, many of them are collected here for the first time, making their first appearance in over a century.
Download or read book Father Brown written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2005-04-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown may seem a pleasantly doddering Roman Catholic priest, but appearances deceive. With keen observation and an unerring sense of man’s frailties–gained during his years listening to confessions–Father Brown succeeds in bringing even the most elusive criminals to justice. This definitive collection of fifteen stories, selected by the American Chesterton Society, includes such classics as “The Blue Cross,” “The Secret Garden,” and “The Paradise of Thieves.” As P. D. James writes in her Introduction, “We read the Father Brown stories for a variety pleasures, including their ingenuity, their wit and intelligence, and for the brilliance of the writing. But they provide more. Chesterton was concerned with the greatest of all problems, the vagaries of the human heart.”
Book Synopsis The Collected Works G.K. Chesterton, Vol. 21 by : G. K. Chesterton
Download or read book The Collected Works G.K. Chesterton, Vol. 21 written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Chesterton's commentaries and reflections on what he saw on his travels in America and Rome, plus an appendix on how America saw Chesterton. On January 10, 1921, Gilbert and Frances Chesterton began a three month tour of the United States. During their first stop in the City of New York, Chesterton examined the lights of Broadway and proclaimed: "What a glorious garden of wonders this would be to anyone who was lucky enough to be unable to read." In his writing on America, Chesterton shows a remarkable ability for sympathetic appreciation of the principle traits of America. He would acquire an uncanny clear-sightedness about many things in America that it would not be an exaggeration to call clairvoyant. One greatness recognized another greatness, and one can say that Chesterton truly knew something profound about America. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's, Chesterton's travels included Jerusalem, Ireland, North America and Rome. This volume contains his reflections on his 1921 and 1930-31 tour of North America and his 1929 trip to Rome. Readers will enjoy the great man's impressions of city skyscrapers, rural America, the politics of Washington, as well as his views of Pope Pius XI, the Eternal City, Mussolini and Fascism. The introduction to this volume was written by Dr. Robert Royal, Vice President of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington, D.C. The appendix was compiled by the late Chairman of the Northeastern Chapter of the G.K. Chesterton Society, Mr. Robert Knille. The appendix gives the newspaper accounts of Chesterton's 1921 trip to America. It contains generous excerpts of the speeches, interviews and comments G.K.C. made during his tour. Most of the material provided has never appeared in book form.

Book Synopsis The Complete Father Brown Stories by : G K Chesterton
Download or read book The Complete Father Brown Stories written by G K Chesterton and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 1087 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete adventures of the well-loved clerical sleuth, collected in one brilliant volume. Shabby and lumbering, with a face like a Norfolk dumpling, Father Brown makes for an improbable super-sleuth. But his innocence is the secret of his success: refusing the scientific method of detection, he adopts instead an approach of simple sympathy, interpreting each crime as a work of art, and each criminal as a man no worse than himself. This complete edition brings together all of the Father Brown stories, including two not previously available in Penguin: 'The Donnington Affair', in which Chesterton rises to the challenge of solving a murder-mystery half written by someone else (Max Pemberton), and 'The Mask of Midas', which was found in Chesterton's papers after his death. It also includes an introduction and notes by Michael D. Hurley. G.K. Chesteron was born in 1874. He attended the Slade School of Art, where he appears to have suffered a nervous breakdown, before turning his hand to journalism. A prolific writer throughout his life, his best-known books include The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904), The Man Who Knew Too Much(1922), The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) and the Father Brown stories. Chesterton converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922 and died in 1938. Michael D. Hurley is a Lecturer in English at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of St Catharine's College. He has written widely on English literature from the nineteenth century to the present day, with an emphasis on poetry and poetics. His book on G. K. Chesterton was published in 2011.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heretics, Orthodoxy, and The Everlasting Man are all three of G. K. Chesterton's Chesterton Apologetics collected in one volume. Heretics - In his defence of God, Chesterton addresses views from his time by H. G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Kipling, and others. It features wonderful ideas from the 1905 British edition, such these: There are many men in the current world who adhere to dogmas despite being completely unaware of them. Orthodoxy - Organized around a conundrum and its solution, it describes how Chesterton transformed from a pagan to a devout Christian. from the British Edition of 1908 In The Everlasting Man, Chesterton successfully refutes the notion that Jesus Christ was merely a human being and that man is merely another animal that has evolved. It was the most effective popular defence of the complete Christian stance, according to C. S. Lewis. It contains wonderful ideas from the 1925 British Edition, including the following: According to our understanding, even the story of God can be described as an adventure story. Atheists may still fight Christianity, but it will be on a par with their battles against other aspects of nature, such as the sky and the environment. This classic book should not be missed by any student of thinking since it is witty, insightful, and genuinely enjoyable. This edition is offered in a compact book with the entire text at a reasonable price.
