Book Synopsis The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Lettice Galbraith by : Lettice Galbraith
Download or read book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Lettice Galbraith written by Lettice Galbraith and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange stories by a little known Victorian writer Lettice Galbraith not only wrote works on supernatural themes, she was apparently something of a mystery in her own right. She appeared on the literary scene with little pedigree in 1893, published two or three stories in quick succession, and then disappeared from public view. Whilst she was probably British, based on the paucity of information about her, no one can be certain that she wrote under her own name. Six of her ghost stories were gathered together in one small volume, New Ghost Stories, which appears in its entirety here with one additional story. Most experts in the field agree that this author made a fine contribution to the fiction of the supernatural in the style of the late Victorian era, and that her only fault was that she decided not to produce more offerings for her satisfied readership. In this Leonaur edition readers will discover 'The Blue Room', 'The Trainer's Ghost', 'The Seance Room', 'The Ghost's Revenge' and others. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
Book Synopsis The Shadow on the Blind and Other Stories by : Louisa Baldwin
Download or read book The Shadow on the Blind and Other Stories written by Louisa Baldwin and published by Wordsworth Editions. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Victorians had an insatiable appetite for the macabre and sensational: stories of murder and suspense, ghosts, the supernatural and the inexplicable were the stuff of life to them. The two writers in this volume well represent the last decade of the nineteenth century, and are of interest in themselves as well as for their contribution to the chilling of the Victorian spine. Mrs. Alfred Baldwin attempted as a child to contact her dead sister through a seance, and took to writing when stricken by a mysterious illness six weeks after marriage. She was also the mother of the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin. Lettice Galbraith is herself no less mysterious than the stories she wrote. She appeared on the literary scene in 1893, published a novel and two collections of stories in that year, a further story ("The Blue Room") in 1897, and then nothing more. Readers of 'The Empty Picture Frame', 'The Case of Sir Nigel Otterburne', 'The Trainer's Ghost' and 'The Seance Room' will recognise the Victorian spirit at its finest.

Book excerpt: As the fog thickens and the smoky dark sweeps across the capital, strange stories emerge from all over the city. A jilted lover returns as a demon to fulfill his revenge in Kensington, and a seance becomes a life and death struggle off Regents Canal. In the borough of Lambeth, stay clear of the Old House in Vauxhall Walk and be careful up in Temple--there's something not right about the doleful, droning hum of the telegram wires overhead . . . Join Elizabeth Dearnley on this atmospheric tour through the Big Smoke, a city which has long fueled the imagination of writers of the weird and supernormal. Waiting in the shadowy streets are tales from writers such as Charlotte Riddell, Lettie Galbraith, and Violet Hunt, who delight in twisting the urban myths and folk stories of the city into pieces of masterful suspense and intrigue. This collection will feature a map motif and notes before each story, giving readers the real-world context for these hauntings and encounters, and allowing the modern reader to seek out the sites themselves--should they dare.

A unique selection ranging from the spooky haunted houses of Victorian Christmastime to experimental twentieth-century horrors. It offers a truly international scope of stories, from the pine forests of Canada to the peaks of the Alps. Like any other boy I expected ghost stories at Christmas, that was the time for them. What I had not expected, and now feared, was that such things should actually become real. Strange things happen on the dark wintry nights of December. Welcome to a new collection of haunting Christmas tales, ranging from traditional Victorian chillers to weird and uncanny episodes by twentieth-century horror masters including Daphne du Maurier and Robert Aickman. Lurking in the blizzard are menacing cat spirits, vengeful trees, malignant forces on the mountainside and a skater skirting the line between the mortal and spiritual realms. Wrap up warm - and prepare for the longest nights of all.

Download or read book Witch-Cult Abbey written by Mark Samuels and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in 1940, Saul Prior receives a letter from Lady Caroline Degabaston to catalogue the library of Thool Abbey in Hertfordshire, he jumps at the chance. But he soon finds himself in a realm that seems cut off from the real world. In the cryptic fastnesses of the abbey, Prior is beset by bizarre dreams and seems incapable of leaving the place. Lady Caroline proves to be a baleful and mysterious presence, and Prior is mired in a landscape that mingles Gothic terror and surrealism. The actual books that Prior is tasked with cataloguing are themselves a farrago of occultism, psychological aberration, and cosmic horror. And when other presences manifest themselves in and around the castle, Prior knows that he has stumbled into an adventure that is unlikely to end short of death or madness. Mark Samuels has knitted together many of the themes that appear in his previous work into a grand synthesis of dread and awe. Impeccably written, with careful attention to historical detail and the portrayal of the strange characters he puts on stage, Witch-Cult Abbey is a triumph of supernatural terror.

Book excerpt: It is too often accepted that during the 19th and early 20th centuries it was the male writers who developed and pushed the boundaries of the weird tale, with women writers following in their wake--but this is far from the truth. This new anthology follows the instrumental contributions made by women writers to the weird tale, and revives the lost authors of the early pulp magazines along with the often overlooked work of more familiar authors. See the darker side of The Secret Garden author Frances Hodgson Burnett and the sensitively-drawn nightmares of Marie Corelli and Violet Quirk. Hear the captivating voices of Weird Tales magazine contributors Sophie Wenzel Ellis, Greye La Spina, and Margaret St Clair, and bow down to the sensational, surreal, and challenging writers who broke down the barriers of the day. Featuring material never before republished, from the abyssal depths of the British Library vaults.
