Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Essays and Papers of George Saintsbury, Vol. 1: 1875 1920 When Mr Dent (who had originally published a certain part of this collection) asked me to collect still further from other volumes published some thirty years ago but long out of print, and to refresh the whole with yet other essays, papers, lectures (not class-lectures) and the like, I had to make up several minds - my own and other people's - on, as far as my own was concerned, several points. The "other people" gave me no trouble: my requests for permission to reprint were in every case granted in the kindest manner, details of which will be found annexed to this Preface. It was not quite so easy to make up my own mind as to the constituents of the collection. As far as quantity went there was not the slightest difficulty. I never thought of reproducing or asking permission to reproduce here the numerous and sometimes bulky "Introductions," which I have at different times contributed to editions of Thackeray, Balzac, Dryden, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, Richardson, Donne, Herrick, Miss Austen, Marmontel, Moliere and others, though I should rather like to see them together. And if I had begun to sort the chaos of old reviews and miscellaneous articles dating from my twenty years' general service to the Press there would have been no end to it. The present collection - itself somewhat laboriously sifted - consists, in addition to the reprints, of papers separately written or in a few cases delivered, some if not all of these latter having never been printed before. It seemed unnecessary to go through these and alter things like "You know" or "You will see" into "It is generally known" or "It will be seen."
