Despite their ubiquity, the origin and evolution of magnetic fields remains an outstanding question in astrophysics. In this thesis, I present new observations towards the construction of the cosmological timeline of magnetic field evolution. With the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, I probe a new physical depth into the magnetic field structure of the nearside halo of spiral galaxy NGC 6946. By combining these data with previous observations at other frequencies, I model the magnetic field structure along the line of sight from the midplane to the halo. I find that the galaxy is best described by a clumpy turbulent medium that extends from the midplane to the thick synchrotron disk (~1 kpc), and estimate the scale and strength of the turbulent fields in the halo. From the isolated NGC 6946, I move to the loose galaxy group, NGC 2563, to study the magnetic fields in the intragroup medium. By comparing the Faraday rotation of distant sources behind NGC 2563 to the rotation measures of sources with sightlines surrounding it, I am unable to detect signs of large-scale fields as was previously observed in galaxy clusters. I show evidence for a radial decrease in the Faraday dispersion, as well as an increase in the magnitude of the Faraday rotation with impact distance to a known galaxy member. These last two observations suggest the presence of magnetic fields in the intragroup medium as well as a mechanism for magnetizing that medium. Lastly, I present new observations of the Faraday rotation of 149 QSOs at 0.6

Observations of magnetic fields in the Milky Way show that magnetic fields are an important force acting on gas in the interstellar medium. Observing magnetic fields outside of the Milky Way is challenging, and the most reliable observations of extragalactic magnetic fields are in galaxies similar to the Milky Way. This dissertation focuses on results from observations of magnetic fields in galaxies at a very different stage of their evolution than the Milky Way. There are two main types of galaxies described here: starburst galaxies and early-type galaxies. Starburst galaxies are galaxies that are very rapidly forming stars as a result of a merger, and represent a short lived, but dramatic, phase during galaxy evolution. Early-type galaxies have limited star formation, and typically have little remaining gas. The three main approaches I use to study extragalactic magnetic fields are: (i) directly measuring magnetic fields via Zeeman splitting, targeting starburst galaxies that host such strong OH maser lines that they are called OH megamasers (OHMs); (ii) exploring the excitation of OH in both starburst galaxies and early-type galaxies, in order to understand how and where OHMs are produced; and (iii) assessing the quality of an alternative method of measuring magnetic fields in galaxies based on measuring synchrotron fluxes, looking in starburst galaxies and one early-type galaxy. Using both single dish and interferometric observations of Zeeman splitting in OHMs, I find that magnetic fields are dynamically important within starburst galaxies, both on scales relevant to star formation (roughly a parsec), and on larger scales with the interstellar medium of starburst galaxies. I discuss observations of OH lines in starburst galaxies and in early-type galaxies, and conclude that they support models in which OHMs are excited radiatively through far-infrared emission. I present evidence that estimates of magnetic fields from applying the minimum energy argument to observations of synchrotron fluxes are wrong in two very different environments: the interstellar medium of starburst galaxies and a radio jet in an early-type galaxy.

Because of their large sizes the nature of magnets such as the Earth and the Sun is entirely different from the nature of a horseshoe magnet. The source of cosmic magnetism is associated with the hydrodynamic motions of a highly conductive medium. In this aspect, cosmic magnets resemble a dynamo. However, currents in the dynamo flow along properly ordered wires, while chaotic, turbulent motions are dominant inside stars and liquid planetary cores. This makes more intriguing and surprising the fact that these motions maintain a regular magnetic field. Maintenance of magnetic fields is even more impressive in huge magnets, i.e. galaxies. In fact, we are living inside a giant dynamo machine, the Milky Way galaxy. Although the idea of the global magnetic field of our Galaxy was clearly proposed almost 40 years ago, firm observational evidence and definite theoretical concepts of galactic magnetism have been developed only in the last decade. This book is the first attempt at a full and consistent presentation of this problem. We discuss both theoretical views on the origin of galactic magnetism and the methods of observational study. Previous discussions were on the level of review articles or separate chapters in monographs devoted to cosmic magnetic fields (see, e.g., H. K. Moffatt, 1978, E. N. Book excerpt: A key yet poorly understood component to galaxy evolution models is the influence of the local environment, and is a particularly important aspect to understanding the evolution in galaxy clusters. Galaxy clusters are not only host to significant overdensities of galaxies, but these galaxies are embedded in a hot, diffuse Intracluster Medium (ICM). The ICM has long been observed to have important and lasting impacts on the properties of their constituent galaxies, which are commonly attributed to a number of unique astrophysical processes such as the stripping of galaxy gas by the ICM due to ram pressure and repeated tidal interactions. The galaxies in turn have also been observed to play an important role in the evolution of the ICM, especially near the centers of galaxy clusters where powerful outbursts from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can provide a quasi-steady source of heating to the surrounding ICM, a process known as AGN feedback. Although great progress has been made in recent years to understand the connection between galaxies and the ICM, the precise influence of the ICM on cluster galaxies and the astrophysical processes that drive galaxy evolution in clusters are still subject to important uncertainties. It is clear from the data, however, that the predictions of the simplest models of ram pressure stripping, tidal encounters, and AGN feedback are inconsistent with observations; in particular observations taken with the modern generation of X-ray telescopes such as Chandra and XMM-Newton. These telescopes, with their superb angular resolution, large collecting areas, and wide fields of view, have revolutionized our understanding of galaxies in clusters, in particular for AGN. In this thesis, I will present a series of results regarding the nature of ram pressure stripping, harassment, and AGN feedback in cluster member galaxies driven primarily by X-ray observations. These results include multiwavelength observations of one of the most extreme cases of AGN feedback currently known, a mosaic of galaxies in the nearby Virgo Cluster which are all undergoing different variants of ramp pressure stripping, and the first set of results from one of the largest X-ray AGN surveys ever undertaken with Chandra. All of these results suggest an intricate choreography between the gas reservoirs initially hosted by galaxies and the surrounding ICM, with tests that investigate length scales ranging from 10 kpc to 1 Mpc.

It was found that structure formation plays an important role in amplifying large-scale magnetic fields and that the magnetic properties of the obtained cluster were in good agreement with recent observations. The initial field was amplified by a factor of up to 1000 during the formation of the cluster, and the field strength was seen to be well correlated with the gas density. We further found a magnetic energy power spectrum that is well described by -5/3 Kolmogorov-type turbulence. Near the accretion shocks on the outskirts of the cluster, the magnetic field is amplified well beyond the value expected from mere compression of gas. Here, shear flows lead to a substantial increase in field strength. Realistic Faraday rotation measures were obtained from the simulation data, which was however not resolved well-enough to allow for a more quantitative analysis.
