Book excerpt: Bare represents the gamut of my existence and accomplishments which would not have otherwise come to fruition absent challenges that I faced. Writing is beneficial and helps me to strike a balance between daily activities and my inner self. It provides calm during raging storms which seem to be endless. Among them is sexual abuse and single parenting. Add to this equation caretaker for aging and terminally ill parents twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Having been assaulted, raped, and physically beaten to take away my will in this century was both devastating and alarming. This web of collusion caused me to constantly seek intricate and flexible solutions to combat underemployment and isolation. Lines like fluent fountains continue to flow and finally there are so many verses that I was asked to publish them. My perspective reflects the struggle against an unforgiving systematic sociological structure which needs revision. Resolute to triumph, I conquer ignorance through both the word of God and academic subjects. My prayer for America is that in the present moment, our leadership will be more inclusive of opportunities for women, especially black women. The environmental forces and circumstances surrounding our success is different. Change for the betterment of the nation and revisit the way employers treat and view all older workers.

Book excerpt: Set in Vancouver's Chinatown in the 1930s and 1940s, Choy continues the story of the Chen family household, this time narrated by First Son, Kiam-Kim. We first meet Kiam-Kim at the age of eight, staring at the yellowed photograph of his mother, who died in China when he was just a baby. Kiam-Kim, Poh-Poh (his larger-than-life grandmother) and Mr. Chen, his demure and honest father, journey to a new life in Vancouver's Old Chinatown. Following the dream of finding gold and then one day returning to China -- wealthy -- they, like many Chinese families around them, find themselves in a country on the brink of the Second World War, struggling to survive in a foreign land and keep alive the traditions of an older world. Finely crafted, and rich in historical detail, All That Matters depicts 1930s Vancouver in the haunting hues of memory, and sees in the Chen family a fragile miniature of a larger world. Dwelling on Kiam-Kim's sense of responsibility to his community, Choy unfolds the Chen family's secrets in thoughtful and luminous prose, leading the reader to a breathtaking conclusion that far transcends the limits of its time and place, and gestures towards all humanity.

Anabel Lee and her father have made a middle-of-the-night move from their former home to a remote hilltop house in Missouri. Anabel is glad that she was able to finish high school before the move, but has resigned herself to the fact that her father's bootlegging business has made them nomads and left her with a life of loneliness. So when a young boy named Jack Jones comes to the door, hungry and looking for work, Anabel eagerly invites him in. And Anabel's father quickly recruits him for his operation. Meanwhile, Jack's older sister is looking for her runaway brother and begs law officer Corbin Appleby to find him. Corbin does so easily, but he also stumbles across the rumrunners-and Anabel, who attracts him immediately. What's an honest lawman to do?

Book excerpt: From his earliest days as a culture-beat reporter, through a wildly successful four decades in the book business, to his latest philanthropic ventures, Stephen Rubin has witnessed up close the highs and lows of publishing, music, and entertainment over the last half-century. Now, in this refreshingly forthright and uninhibited memoir, he shares the stories and secrets of a legendary career. Freshly graduated from New York University, Rubin parlayed what had been a music column in his college paper into a freelance writing gig, covering culture, pop and classical music, and Hollywood. This landed him spots in major newspapers and put him in the company of fabulous opera divas, pop singers, and other unforgettable personalities (including his future wife Cynthia, a talent manager). Here, he shares his adventures with such varied and iconic figures as Luciano Pavarotti, Judy Garland, Pierre Boulez, Burt Lancaster, Dimitri Shostakovich, and Gregory Peck. Rubin recounts how, after joining Bantam Books in 1984, he rose steadily through the ranks of the publishing business, taking readers behind the scenes of the publication of record-breaking bestsellers such as John Grisham’s The Firm and Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. With an uncanny ability to right the ship of floundering houses and imprints, he stepped into roles (and on some toes) at Bantam, Doubleday, Transworld, Henry Holt, and Simon & Schuster. He spares no details or feelings as he recounts corporate missteps and personal feuds at the highest levels of the literary world. Full of riveting detail, engagingly told, and generously leavened with insider dish, this is an unparalleled look at the culture industry from the man who’s seen it all first-hand.

Book excerpt: The simplicity of Ojai farm girl Meggie Baxter's life is shattered when she must choose between loyalty to her rough-hewn friend, Rusty, and the dashing Charles. As the decades of her life unfold, she faces the elemental dangers of floods and fire as well as the colorful high-jinks radiating from Pop Soper's Fight Camp, the steam baths at Matilija Hot Springs, a leaning post office tower, a corrupt councilman and Libbey's plans to modernize the town. Amid tragedy and loss, Meggie clings to the one constant in her life, the promise of God's love. It is the "pink moment", the evening sunset casting a rosy hue like a prayer across the Topa Topa Mountains, that points her again and again to faith and courage. Midst the idyllic beauty of the Ojai Valley and the crushing forces of change, will Meggie and her beloved Ojai stay true to their rural roots of faith and family? Will the ultimate sacrifice that spares Rusty's life be enough? Or will the winds of destiny destroy both the people and the indomitable spirit of the Ojai?

Here are 55 tried-and-true story hour programs with a thematic approach. All are highly flexible and adaptable across the full preschool age range. There are also 18 individual holiday and seasonal programs. All story hours provide ideas for name tags, suggested audiovisual materials, recommended story, poetry and song selections, additional titles and a full description of the activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back on the Farm is a collection of 176 humorous stories Harold Sullivan wrote for his grandchildren about growing up on a farm in Comet, West Virginia, during the '30s and '40s. The moments that were the basis of the stories were frozen in time for the author, and his fond retelling--"When I was a boy, back on the farm"--recreates that life in the reader's mind too. His stories are of small triumphs, giant failures, and a few in between. They are funny tales of his relationship with his younger sister, whom as one story recounts, he convinced to let him shoot her with a homemade BB gun. This sister then pretended it didn't hurt so she would shoot him too! Many of the stories are about his hardworking mother, such as the time Harold and his sister made mud pies with eggs from the farm (a huge financial loss in the Depression) and Momma spanked them twice--once for the act and again when she found they had taken all the eggs. The hero of many of his stories was his father, a "big man" in many ways, whose battle with the "pushy cow" showed the personality of the man--and of the cow. Harold's stories are of a way of life that doesn't exist anymore in the tiny community of Comet, West Virginia, which doesn't exist anymore either. But for the people who lived there, or for anyone who has lived on a farm, the tales from Harold's memory bring back a simpler time worth revisiting. These stories, of a boy growing up among hardworking and close-knit family and community, are a love song to life, Back on the Farm.

Book excerpt: Meet Jack Brennan, a twenty-one-year-old educational greenhorn armed with a bachelor's degree in secondary science education, a reasonable degree of intelligence, and a woefully shallow pool of experience. He easily lands a job with the Buffalo Public School District and realizes too late that he's been tossed into the meat grinder that is urban education. As his first year progresses, the school of hard knocks introduces him to inept administrators, burned-out teachers, asocial children, apathetic parents, a naïve court system, and a seriously flawed bureaucracy. Jack's tribulations include a riotous school invasion, the theft of his car by a student, and a desperate drive through a blizzard while attempting to return his students from an ill-fated camping trip. When a major tragedy strikes, Jack plods numbly along in the wake of the school community's loss. He must decide if all the heartache is worth the effort. Success could make teaching a life's career. Failure will make him desperate for a way to support his life. Advance Praise for Schooling Mr. Brennan "I think Schooling Mr. Brennan should be required reading to teachers and parents. It's a solid, compelling read." -Hayward Allen, Author, Editor, and Literary Critic
