Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of nonstrictly hyperbolic conservation laws is emerging as an important field, not only because it developed from applications of current interest, such as reservoir simulation, visco-elasticity, and multiphase flow, but also because the subject raises interesting mathematical questions of well-posedness, the structure of solutions, and admissibility criteria for weak solutions. The papers in this collection are based on talks presented at an AMS Special Session, held in Anaheim, California, in January 1985. Requiring some background in conservation laws, this collection will be of interest to research mathematicians working in the field of nonstrictly hyperbolic partial differential equations, as well as students who are learning the area and are looking for new applications and challenging problems in this field. The collection provides an overview of the field, examples of applications, descriptions of available techniques, and a bibliography of the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High dimensional integration arises naturally in two major sub-fields of statistics: multivariate and Bayesian statistics. Indeed, the most common measures of central tendency, variation, and loss are defined by integrals over the sample space, the parameter space, or both. Recent advances in computational power have stimulated significant new advances in both Bayesian and classical multivariate statistics. In many statistical problems, however, multiple integration can be the major obstacle to solutions. This volume contains the proceedings of an AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Statistical Multiple Integration, held in June 1989 at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. The conference represents an attempt to bring together mathematicians, statisticians, and computational scientists to focus on the many important problems in statistical multiple integration. The papers document the state of the art in this area with respect to problems in statistics, potential advances blocked by problems with multiple integration, and current work directed at expanding the capability to integrate over high dimensional surfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its genesis more than thirty-five years ago, the field of computer vision has been known by various names, including pattern recognitions, image analysis, and image understanding. The central problem of computer vision is obtaining descriptive information by computer analysis of images of a scene. Together with the related fields of image processing and computer graphics, it has become an established discipline at the interface between computer science and electrical engineering. This volume contains fourteen papers presented at the AMS Special Session on Geometry Related to Computer Vision, held in Hoboken, New Jersey in Ooctober 1989. This book makes the results presented at the Special Session, which previously had been available only in the computer science literature, more widely available within the mathematical sciences community. Geometry plays a major role in computer vision since scene descriptions always involve geometrical properties of, and relations among, the objects of surfaces in the scene. The papers in this book provide a good sampling of geometric problems connected with computer vision. They deal with digital lines and curves, polygons, shape decompositions, digital connectedness and surfaces, digital metrics, and generalizations to higher-dimensional and graph-structured "spaces". Aimed at computer scientists specializing in image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition - as well as mathematicians interested in applications to computer science - this book will provide readers with a view of how geometry is currently being applied to problems in computer vision.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for category theorists and logicians familiar with basic category theory, this book focuses on categorical model theory, which is concerned with the categories of models of infinitary first order theories, called accessible categories. The starting point is a characterization of accessible categories in terms of concepts familiar from Gabriel-Ulmer's theory of locally presentable categories. Most of the work centers on various constructions (such as weighted bilimits and lax colimits), which, when performed on accessible categories, yield new accessible categories. These constructions are necessarily 2-categorical in nature; the authors cover some aspects of 2-category theory, in addition to some basic model theory, and some set theory. One of the main tools used in this study is the theory of mixed sketches, which the authors specialize to give concrete results about model theory. Many examples illustrate the extent of applicability of these concepts. In particular, some applications to topos theory are given. Perhaps the book's most significant contribution is the way it sets model theory in categorical terms, opening the door for further work along these lines. Requiring a basic background in category theory, this book will provide readers with an understanding of model theory in categorical terms, familiarity with 2-categorical methods, and a useful tool for studying toposes and other categories.

Book excerpt: Although Bessel functions are among the most widely used functions in applied mathematics, this book is essentially the first to present a calculus associated with this class of functions. The author obtains a generalized umbral calculus associated with the Euler operator and its associated Bessel eigenfunctions for each positive value of an index parameter. For one particular value of this parameter, the functions and operators can be associated with the radial parts of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space objects. Some of the results of this book are in part extensions of the work of Rota and his co-workers on the ordinary umbral calculus and binomial enumeration. The author also introduces a wide variety of new polynomial sequences together with their groups and semigroup compositional properties. Generalized Bernoulli, Euler, and Stirling numbers associated with Bessel functions and the corresponding classes of polynomials are also studied. The book is intended for mathematicians and physicists at the research level in special function theory.
