Book Synopsis Biology of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica by : J.M. Ferris
Download or read book Biology of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica written by J.M. Ferris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume was conceived as a companion to 'Antarctic Oasis: Terrestrial environments and history of the Vestfold Hills' edited by J. Pickard and published in 1986 by Academic Press, Sydney. Pickard's book contains accounts of the Vestfold Hills' climate (N. A. Streten) and recent geomorphological history (D. A. Adamson & J. Pickard) which provide a valuable context for understanding their present day biology. Pickard also gives a history of human discovery and occupation of the Vest fold Hills. There is some overlap in the coverage, to the extent that both this volume and Pickard's book describe the terrestrial flora and fauna. The reader specifically interested in the terrestrial ecosystems of the Vestfold Hills should draw from both sources. Together, these works present a broad and descriptive account of the largest truly coastal antarctic oasis: a region that holds a unique variety of opportunities for future scientific investigation. There are several tasks I wish to accomplish here, apart from expressing my sincere thanks to the many people who have contributed to the completion of this volume. I wish to briefly introduce the Vestfolds and to list some of the features that, in my opinion, make them biologically varied, and unique in the context of other coastal ice-free areas. I wish to describe the phases of biological research in this region, including the directions that have been pursued since the 1984 symposium and to comment upon the future of the Vestfold Hills.
Book Synopsis Microbial Ecosystems of Antarctica by : Warwick F. Vincent
Download or read book Microbial Ecosystems of Antarctica written by Warwick F. Vincent and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A structured account of the full range of environments in Antarctica and of the microbial communities that live within them. The author examines the major features of the chemical and physical environment in each habitat, and the influence of these features on the population structure and dynamics of their microbiota. Each chapter considers a specific type of environment, the microbial species that dominate, their community structure and dynamics, and the microbial processes that operate and have been measured in the ecosystem. The chapters conclude with an overview of the ecosystem trophic structure and an introduction to the larger organisms that depend on the microbiota. Separate chapters examine the range of cellular strategies adopted by microorganisms within the Antarctic environment, and the increasing influence of humans on these communities.

Download or read book Salt Lakes written by W.D. Williams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is composed of papers presented at an International Symposium on Athalassic (Inland) Salt Lakes, which was hosted by the University of Adelaide, South Australia, during a week in October 1979. The genesis of the Symposium was at the Copenhagen Congress of the International Association of Limnology (S.1. L.) where it was noted that a number of papers concerned with inland saline lakes were distributed throughout sessions in such a way as to make it difficult to attend all of them. A number of participants at the Congress felt that the ecology of salt lakes had greater homogeneity or cohesiveness than this sort of distribution would suggest, and it was decided that a symposium on salt lakes be held. The symposium was the first under the aegis of the S.l. L. to be held in Australia, and it was very well attended, with participants coming from many countries. The week long programme produced a number of lively and interesting sessions on all aspects of athalassic saline lakes. Participants stayed on after the Symposium for an expedition to Lake Eyre, in the nQrth of South Australia, and were given one of the best of all possible introductions to the Australian environment.
Book Synopsis Diatoms of the Saline Lakes of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica by : Donna Roberts
Download or read book Diatoms of the Saline Lakes of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica written by Donna Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diatoms are an important element of many polar marine microbial communities and particularly abundant in Antarctic lakes. However, few comprehensive studies, such as the study presented in this volume are available on Antarctic communities. The diatom floras encountered in surface sediment samples from 33 lakes of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica are presented. 67 distinct diatom species were identified in these sediments. They include cosmopolitan, Southern Ocean, endemic Antarctic and new diatoms. Each species encountered is described and illustrated; autecological information on the species is included where possible. Epilimnion water chemistry of the lakes sampled was determined to investigate their influence on diatom distribution. The studied lakes span a very large range of salinities from 0.5 to 165 permil. The authors show that salinity seems to have a strong influence on the observed diatom taxa.
Book Synopsis Antarctic Earth Science by : R. L. Oliver
Download or read book Antarctic Earth Science written by R. L. Oliver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth international symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences took place in Adelaide, South Australia during the week 16-20 August 1982. This volume contains a record of the centenary activities celebrating Sir Douglas Mawson and the one hundred and seventy-four papers that were presented by delegates for discussion over the five days. Sir Douglas Mawson was part of the first team to reach the magnetic South Pole, a leading geologist and scientific figure during the heroic age of of antarctic exploration. The papers presented during the symposium were divided into fifteen categories covering east and west Antarctica, marine, land and glacial geology, plate tectonics, islands, peninsulas, climatic change and Precambrian and Cenozoic era activity. The two hundred persons from sixteen countries who attended the symposium brought together a wide range of the most current expertise and research to share, of which this volume provides a record.
Book Synopsis GLACIAL LANDSYSTEMS by : David J.A. Evans
Download or read book GLACIAL LANDSYSTEMS written by David J.A. Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive overview of the ever-captivating field of glaciation from the perspective of glacial landsystems. This approach models the many processes, forms and interactions that can be found in glaciated landscapes throughout the world. Landsystems models allow the glacial geologist and geomorphologist to evaluate these landscapes in relation to the dynamics of glaciation and to climate and geology. Glacial Landsystems brings together the expertise of an international range of specialists to provide an up-to-date summary of landsystems relevant to both modern and ancient glacier systems and also in the reconstruction and interpretation of former glacial environments. The models are applicable at all scales from ice sheets to small valley glaciers. This book is an essential reference for anyone embarking upon research or engineering surveys in glaciated basins and provides a wide-ranging handbook of glacial landsystem types for students of glaciation.
