It focuses on a dynamic, integrated, and disaggregated analysis of how land, water and energy interact in the biophysical and economic systems. The report provides projections for the biophysical and economic consequences of nexus bottlenecks until 2060, highlighting that while the LWE nexus is essentially local, there can be significant large-scale repercussions in vulnerable regions, notably on forest cover and in terms of food and water security. The analysis is based on coupling a gridded biophysical systems model with a multi-regional, multi-sectoral dynamic general equilibrium modelling assessment. Numerical insights are provided by investigating a carefully selected set of scenarios that are designed to illustrate the key bottlenecks: one scenario for each resource bottleneck, plus two scenarios that combine all bottlenecks, with and without an overlay of climate change.

Book excerpt: The existence of water, energy, and food (WEF) is critical for people to fulfil their basic needs, to achieve welfare, and to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The WEF security topic is becoming widely discussed in developing and developed countries. Major components of WEF security i.e. availability, accessibility, and quality should be achieved integratedly to avoid unexpected impacts. The interconnectedness among endogenous and exogenous variables such as environmental, socio-economic, and political factors makes this issue immensely complex. The nexus approach attempts to integrate management and governance across sectors and scales to improve WEF security. This study aims to grasp WEF security in a local context and evaluate the implications of planned local interventions by developing a conceptual and quantitative analysis with local stakeholders. Karawang Regency in Indonesia is chosen as the case study. Several strategies for WEF-related sectors are formulated using location quotient (LQ) and competitive position (CP) methods. In addition, qualitative and quantitative system dynamics models are established by involving related stakeholders through group model building. Finally, a nexus-based framework for WEF security is developed to assist local policymakers in doing the evaluation and planning of WEF resources in the region.

They have long been harvested by local people to meet their daily needs. Since the 1970s, a combination of demographic, economic and policy factors has driven forest exploitation at the industrial scale and resulted in growing deforestation. Key factors behind the forest loss and land use change in present-day Indonesia are the expansion of oil palm, plywood production and pulp and paper industries. Oil palm has been one of the fastest-growing sectors of the Indonesian economy, increasing from less than 1 million hectares in 1991 to 8.9 million hectares in 2011. The plywood and pulp and paper industries have also expanded significantly since the log export ban in 1985. All three sectors have contributed to deforestation. Several measures are being taken to reduce the loss of tropical forests in Indonesia. These measures are driven by growing global concern about the impact of deforestation on biodiversity and global warming and the Indonesian governments commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A major policy initiative revolves around developing renewable energy from biomass that can be sourced from oil palm, sugar, cassava, jatropha and timber plantations. This paper analyzes these measures and assesses the conditions under which they may be most effective.

The presentation is presented comprehensively without letting go of the details and context regarding sustainability and the global picture. I am sure that many people, especially those in a strong position, can benefit and be given references from the essential things presented in this book, the great work of both authors, which I am proud of. Prof. Rachmat Witoelar, Indonesia’s President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change (2015 -2019), and advisor to I-SER UI and CAIPSDCC) The concept of sustainable development is a development concept that ensures the fulfillment of the human needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. That is, the idea of sustainable development emphasizes the development of technologies that can increase productivity and reduce the level of damage. The concept of sustainable development is an effort to integrate three aspects of life, namely social, economic, and environmental, in a synergistic relationship supported by infrastructure and institutions. It is among the countries with the most complete and extensive natural resource base, perhaps trailing only Brazil. Still, using natural resources as input for current production processes has increased yearly depletion. With its abundant natural resources, Indonesia should have become a prosperous country from an economic perspective. But yearly rising levels of natural resource depletion in many regions of the country have occurred without an increase in equitable human welfare—those words that I picked up from Prof. Jatna Supriatna and his friend’s book. While in global level two third of the emission comes from fossil fuel combustion, in nation scale almost half of the greenhouse gas emission (GHG) comes from deforestation and degradation. To curb with this, Government of Indonesia's pledge in Copenhagen Accord that Indonesia will reduce its emission level in 2020 from 26% based on domestic funding and up to 41% (with international support at 18 billion USD). In 2006, the Indonesian government enacted a new energy policy, which aims to partially shift from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources in particular biofuels. While the main objective of this policy is to secure the domestic energy supply by partially shifting oil demand to biofuels, in particular in the transportation sector, biofuels are also expected to create jobs for poverty alleviation, to generate income for export and to lead to a net reduction in GHG emissions. This paper use analytical framework to measures the implication of the new climate policy and existing energy policy on deforestation in Indonesia. This study provides an analysis for understanding the political context wherein sustainable development might be applied at local and national level. These conflicts are elaborated upon, in particular the problem associated with land allocation, low carbon technology, climate change mitigation and carbon finance, and the result of this study is to provide the 'win-win' solution in optimum way without sacrifice the economic development.

Therefore, Indonesia is participating in the Paris Agreement and implementing the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation program, role of conservation, sustainable management of forest and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+). In an effort to increase the prosperity of the State, many forests have been transferred to other uses such as the development of oil palm plantations, agricultural land and urban expansion etc. In fact, many agricultural lands have changed their function into settlements. If this happens, the forest area will continue to decrease again because after the agricultural land has turned into residential land, the forest land is converted again for agricultural expansion, this happens continuously. When viewed from the CO2 flux, there will also be changes in the basic CO2 flux from forest land, plantation land, agriculture and urban areas. The problem of deforestation and forest degradation is inseparable from the large number of forest conversion functions into oil palm plantations, expansion of agricultural areas and other uses such as urban development and infrastructure. Opportunities for climate change mitigation and adaptation include the implementation of the REDD+ program, financing of climate change mitigation and availability of climate information. The challenges faced include the lack of synergy in the policy framework and implementation of climate change control, recognition of indigenous peoples,Äô rights and uncertainty in the implementation of the REDD+ program.
