Book excerpt: Every day, ceramic artists encounter techniques, processes, materials, problems, and more that leave them with questions such as: How? Why? Where? Clay: A Studio Handbook answers those questions with authoritative, comprehensive coverage of topics ranging from studio safety, finding, making, and improvising tools and equipment, firing processes and theory, and much more. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in ceramics, Pitelka has created the most practical, all-inclusive studio handbook for students, studio artists, educators, and all those interested in the art of clay. Ten chapters, addressing the full range of ceramic processes, bring a lifetime of ceramic knowledge directly into the hands of potters. Written with concern for safe and efficient studio operation, diligent attention is paid to safety practices. A thorough table of contents, glossary, and index make finding answers quick and convenient. Numerous step-by-step illustrations guide readers through the many techniques.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clayworker's Hand-Book: A Manual for All Engaged in the Manufacture of Articles From Clay During recent years the manufacture of bricks, tiles, pottery, and other articles from clay has extended considerably, and along with the growth of numerous factories has sprung up a considerable literature on the subject of clayworking. This information is, however, contained almost entirely in a number of large and expensive volumes (which are beyond the reach of most of those engaged in the actual manufacture), and in a large number of trade and scientific journals and papers, many of which, being in French and German, are quite inaccessible to the ordinary worker. The present volume embodies an attempt to sift out from this mass of material such information as an extensive experience in clayworking has shown to be of value, and to express it as far as it is possible to do so, in language which will be understood by any intelligent man. Various matters, especially in the section devoted to Tests and Control, are inserted chiefly with a view to showing something of the amount of checking and control which is possible. The trouble and exactitude required in order to carry out several of the tests mentioned may be beyond the power of the ordinary reader, but may prove useful to that increasing class of clayworkers - those who have passed through some training in a technical school. The information is necessarily somewhat condensed, and those who wish for more detailed information are referred to the larger standard works - a list of which is given; but it will be found that much of the material (being original contributions of the author and others to various learned societies and technical papers) is not contained in any of those books. Although care has been taken to mention authors and discoverers whenever their names have been known, it is not possible to include all in so short a volume; but the author hereby acknowledges his thanks to all those clayworkers, known and unknown, who have enabled him to place this information before the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clay Work: A Handbook for Teachers Well-planed modeling boards, twelve by fourteen inch es, are very useful for flat work; however, school slates, or the ordinary roofing tiles may serve the same purpose. If the work is to be carried on in the schoolroom, the desks may be protected with pieces of oilcloth the size of a modeling board. The work may be built upon this, if desired. The same piece of cloth may be wrapped about the unfinished work, thus keeping it in good condition for the next lesso/n./ A few wooden tools made by anyone handy with a knife will be needed, but the most useful of all tools is that supplied by nature - the thumb. In the earlier stages of a model, the fingers and thumb will give the general form desired, and the tool will only be needed in refining the work later on.
