Book excerpt: This experimental study reviewed the efficacy of a new classroom tool known as the Showcase Assignment. This assignment reduces public speaking anxiety in the public speaking classroom. This assignment asked students to pick a talent (poetry reading, singing, etc.) that is important to them in some way, give a brief description of what their talent is, disclose its importance to them, and perform it in front of the class. This study was based on literature related to communication apprehension, experiential learning and self-disclosure theories, and classroom environment. This study used pre-test post-test survey methodology of 179 students, split into treatment and control groups, enrolled in speech courses at two mid-sized universities in the Southern United States to answer five research questions: (1) How does the implementation of the Showcase Assignment affect public speaking anxiety as it relates to speech classrooms? (2) How does the Showcase Assignment impact grades on speaking assignments compared to those that are not exposed? (3) How do students describe the Showcase Assignment in relation to a supportive classroom environment? (4) How do students describe the Showcase Assignment in relation to creative learning? (5) How do perceived instructor personality and implementation of the Showcase Assignment compare to the students' perception of instructor personality and implementation of the Showcase Assignment? The study found that the Showcase Assignment did not have a significant impact on students' self-reports of anxiety overall but, the instructor teaching the Showcase Assignment did impact those reports. The Showcase Assignment did improve student́'s observed anxiety levels, meaning that students in the experiment group appeared more confident when speaking. The assignment also showed an improvement in student grades on speaking assignments. The study found that students reported positive feedback concerning the Showcase Assignment including its benefits in creating a supportive classroom environment and in enhancing creativity skills to help with other speech class presentations. Finally, the study showed that positive instructor personality and implementation of the Showcase Assignment will result in positive student feedback.

Book excerpt: The research investigated instructor verbal and nonverbal immediacy behaviors that reduce perceived distance and foster closeness between the professor and the students, which may influence anxiety reduction among students experiencing speech anxiety (Bolkan, Goodboy, & Myers, 2016; Chesebro & McCroskey, 2001; Velez & Cano, 2008). A survey of student perceived public speaking anxiety and verbal and nonverbal instructor immediacy, which combined the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) (McCroskey, 1970) and the Immediacy Behavior Scale (IBS) (Gorham, 1988), was conducted among undergraduate college students in two colleges in the Northeast United States who had completed a college course in public speaking. The findings indicated a significant relationship between instructor immediacy behaviors and speaking anxiety reduction. A stronger relationship appears to exist between nonverbal immediacy and reduced public speaking anxiety than does verbal immediacy. College professors seeking approaches for lowering student speaking anxiety may want to consider the enhancement and addition of, or the intentional practice of, immediacy behaviors to their pedagogical toolkits. Further study is needed to identify and investigate the extent to which other intervening variables may account for public speaking anxiety reduction among college students.

Book excerpt: For a long time I have wanted to put together a book about sodal and evaluation anxiety. Sodal-evaluation anxiety seemed to be a stressful part of so many people's everyday experience. It also seemed to be apart of so many of the clinical problems that I worked with. Common terms that fit under this rubric include fears of rejection, humiliation, critidsm, embarrassment, ridicule, failure, and abandonment. Examples of sodal and evaluation anxiety include shyness; sodal inhibition; sodal timidity; public speaking anxiety; feelings of self-consdousness and awkwardness in sodal situations; test anxiety; perfor mance anxiety in sports, theater, dance, or music; shame; guilt; separation anx iety; sodal withdrawal; procrastination; and fear of job interviews or job evalua tions, of asking someone out, of not making a good impression, or of appearing stupid, foolish, or physically unattractive. In its extreme form, sodal anxiety is a behavior disorder in its own right sodal phobia. This involves not only feelings of anxiety but also avoidance and withdrawal from sodal situations in which scrutiny and negative evaluation are antidpated. Sodal-evaluation anxiety also plays a role in other clinical disorders. For example, people with agoraphobia are afraid of having a panic attack in public in part because they fear making a spectacle of themselves. Moreover, even their dominant terrors of going crazy or having a heart attack seem to reflect a central concern with sodal abandonment and isolation.
