Book Synopsis How New York Breaks Your Heart by : Bill Hayes
Download or read book How New York Breaks Your Heart written by Bill Hayes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Hayes's critically acclaimed memoir Insomniac City provided a first look at his unique street photography. Now he presents an exquisite collection that captures the full range of his work and the magic of chance encounters in New York City. Hayes's "frank, beautiful, bewitching" street photographs "unmask their subjects' best and truest selves" (Jennifer Senior, New York Times): A policeman pauses at the end of a day. Cooks sneak in cigarette breaks. A pair of movers plays cards on the back of a truck. Friends claim the sidewalk. Lovers embrace. A flame-haired girl gazes mysteriously into the lens. And park benches provide a setting for a couple of hunks, a mom and her baby, a stylish nonagenarian . . . How New York Breaks Your Heart reveals ordinary New Yorkers at their most peaceful, joyful, distracted, anxious, expressive, and at their most fleeting--bringing the texture of the city to vivid life. Woven through with Hayes's lyric reflections, these photos will, like the city itself, break your heart by asking you to fall in love.
Book Synopsis I Speak of the City by : Stephen Wolf
Download or read book I Speak of the City written by Stephen Wolf and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Speak of the City is the most extensive collection of poems ever assembled about New York. Beginning with an early piece by Jacob Steendam (from when the city was called New Amsterdam) and continuing through poems written in the aftermath of 9/11, this anthology features voices from more than a dozen countries. It includes two Nobel Prize recipients, fifteen Pulitzer Prize winners, and many other recognizable names, but it also preserves the work of long-neglected poets who celebrate the wild possibilities and colossal achievements of this epic city. Poets capture New York's major moments and transformations, writing of Hudson's arrival, Stuyvesant's prejudice, and the city's astonishing growth and gentrification. They speak of the thrills of a skyscraper's observation deck and the privations of teeming tenements. They portray the immigrant experience at Ellis Island and the decay, fear, and unexpected kindness on a subway ride. They take place on sidewalks, bridges, and docks; in taxis, buses, and ferries; and even within nature. The Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, and other familiar landmarks are recast through the prism of individual experience yet still reflect the seeming invincibility of New York and its status as a cultural magnet for the freethinking and experimental. While certain subjects and themes can be found in all urban verse, poems about New York have their own restless rhythm and ever-changing style, much like the city itself. Whether writing sonnets, epics, or experimental or imagistic verse, each of these poets has been inspired by the marvels and madness, humor and heartbreak of an enduring city.

Book Synopsis Looking Back at the Jazz Age by : Nancy von Rosk
Download or read book Looking Back at the Jazz Age written by Nancy von Rosk and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Britain’s Downton Abbey and Dancing on the Edge to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, the Jazz Age’s presence in recent popular culture has been striking and pervasive. This volume not only deepens the reader’s knowledge of this iconic period, but also provides a better understanding of its persistent presence “in our time.” Situating well-known Jazz Age writers such as Langston Hughes in new contexts while revealing the contributions of lesser-known figures such as Fannie Hurst, Looking Back at the Jazz Age brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who draw on a wide range of academic fields and critical methods: New Historicism, biography, philosophy, queer theory, psychoanalytical theory, geography, music theory, film studies, and urban studies. The volume includes provocative new readings of the flapper, an intricate examination of the intersections between literature and music, as well as some reflections on the twenty first century’s preoccupation with the Jazz Age. Building on recent scholarship and suggesting avenues for further research, this collection will be of interest to scholars and students in American literature, American history, American studies, cultural studies, and film studies.

The New Yorker calls it “the wittiest essay, and one of the most perceptive, ever done on the city.”

Book Synopsis Paratextuality in Anglophone and Hispanophone Poems in the US Press, 1855-1901 by : Ayendy Bonifacio
Download or read book Paratextuality in Anglophone and Hispanophone Poems in the US Press, 1855-1901 written by Ayendy Bonifacio and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing examples from over 200 English-language and Spanish-language newspapers and periodicals published between January 1855 and October 1901, Paratextuality in Anglophone and Hispanophone Poems in the US Press, 1855-1901 argues that nineteenth-century newspaper poems are inherently paratextual. The paratextual situation of many newspaper poems (their links to surrounding textual items and discourses), their editorialisation through circulation (the way poems were altered from newspaper to newspaper) and their association and disassociation with certain celebrity bylines, editors and newspaper titles enabled contemporaneous poetic value and taste that, in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, were not only sentimental, Romantic and/or genteel. In addition to these important categories for determining a good and bad poem, poetic taste and value were determined, Bonifacio argues, via arbitrary consequences of circulation, paratextualisation, typesetter error and editorial convenience.
