Book Synopsis The City Beyond Architecture by : Alessandro Martinelli
Download or read book The City Beyond Architecture written by Alessandro Martinelli and published by Listlab. This book was released on 2021-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas in the Western world suburbanism has finally come to dominate the landscape and the life of most of the people, in Asia activities are all mixed; one can find agricultural production sitting side by side homes, temples, or high-tech factories. It is a new kind of mixitè and, if properly managed, it seems to be more sustainable than a European periphery. In this context, a new movement is developing, one for public space capable of structuring such particular landscape; providing both social spaces and a sense of identity to the communities living in these places. In a way, what is now developing is what landscape urbanism has been theorizing for some time. Specifically, it is happening in places such as Taiwan, where some form of direct democracy is possible. In a way, it is similar to what happened at the onset of the Tessiner school in South Switzerland, or at the time of the Barcelona Olympics, those rare occurrences of city-making, when innovations in planning and design are put forward. But here, it is something that tells us about what the design culture of most of the world's future urbanization could become.

Download or read book Beyond the City written by Felipe Correa and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, the South American continent has seen a strong push for transnational integration, initiated by the former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who (with the endorsement of eleven other nations) spearheaded the Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America (IIRSA), a comprehensive energy, transport, and communications network. The most aggressive transcontinental integration project ever planned for South America, the initiative systematically deploys ten east-west infrastructural corridors, enhancing economic development but raising important questions about the polarizing effect of pitting regional needs against the colossal processes of resource extraction. Providing much-needed historical contextualization to IIRSA’s agenda, Beyond the City ties together a series of spatial models and offers a survey of regional strategies in five case studies of often overlooked sites built outside the traditional South American urban constructs. Implementing the term “resource extraction urbanism,” the architect and urbanist Felipe Correa takes us from Brazil’s nineteenth-century regional capital city of Belo Horizonte to the experimental, circular, “temporary” city of Vila Piloto in Três Lagoas. In Chile, he surveys the mining town of María Elena. In Venezuela, he explores petrochemical encampments at Judibana and El Tablazo, as well as new industrial frontiers at Ciudad Guayana. The result is both a cautionary tale, bringing to light a history of societies that were “inscribed” and administered, and a perceptive examination of the agency of architecture and urban planning in shaping South American lives.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Kale by : Kristin Reynolds
Download or read book Beyond the Kale written by Kristin Reynolds and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban agriculture is increasingly considered an important part of creating just and sustainable cities. Yet the benefits that many people attribute to urban agriculture-fresh food, green space, educational opportunities-can mask structural inequities, thereby making political transformation harder to achieve. Beyond the Kale argues that urban agricultural projects focused explicitly on dismantling oppressive systems have the greatest potential to achieve substantive social change. Through in-depth interviews and public forums with prominent urban agriculture activists and supporters-primarily people of color and women, whose strategies have often been underrespresented in the literature Kristin Reynolds and Nevin Cohen illustrate how urban farmers and gardeners not only grow food for their communities but also use their activities and spaces to disrupt the dynamics of power and privilege that perpetuate inequity. Beyond the Kale provides recommendations for these in philanthropy, government, nonprofit organizations, and academia to support such initiatives. Book jacket.
Book Synopsis The Informal American City by : Vinit Mukhija
Download or read book The Informal American City written by Vinit Mukhija and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every day in American cities street vendors spread out their wares on sidewalks, food trucks serve lunch from the curb, and homeowners hold sales in their front yards—examples of the wide range of informal activities that take place largely beyond the reach of government regulation. This book examines the “informal revolution” in American urban life, exploring a proliferating phenomenon often associated with developing countries rather than industrialized ones and often dismissed by planners and policy makers as marginal or even criminal. The case studies and analysis in The Informal City challenge this narrow conception of informal urbanism. The chapters look at informal urbanism across the country, empirically and theoretically, in cities that include Los Angeles, Sacramento, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Kansas City, Atlantic City, and New York City. They cover activities that range from unpermitted in-law apartments and ad hoc support for homeless citizens to urban agriculture, street vending and day labor. The contributors consider the nature and underlying logic of these activities, argue for a spatial understanding of informality and its varied settings, and discuss regulatory, planning, and community responses"--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis Beyond Smart Cities by : Tim Campbell
Download or read book Beyond Smart Cities written by Tim Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of competitiveness and economic growth in so-called smart cities is widely advertised in Europe and the US. The promise is focussed on global talent and knowledge economies and not on learning and innovation. But to really achieve smart cities – that is to create the conditions of continuous learning and innovation – this book argues that there is a need to understand what is below the surface and to examine the mechanisms which affect the way cities learn and then connect together. This book draws on quantitative and qualitative data with concrete case studies to show how networks already operating in cities are used to foster and strengthen connections in order to achieve breakthroughs in learning and innovation. Going beyond smart cities means understanding how cities construct, convert and manipulate relationships that grow in urban environments. Cities discussed in this book – Amman, Barcelona, Bilbao, Charlotte,Curitiba, Juarez, Portland, Seattle and Turin – illuminate a blind spot in the literature. Each of these cities has achieved important transformations, and learning has played a key role, one that has been largely ignored in academic circles and practice concerning competitiveness and innovation.
Book Synopsis Beyond the Walled City by : Guadalupe Garcia
Download or read book Beyond the Walled City written by Guadalupe Garcia and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Once one of the most important port cities in the New World, Havana was a model for the planning and construction of other colonial cities. This book tells the story of how Havana was conceived, built, and managed and explores the relationship between colonial empire and urbanization in the Americas. Guadalupe García shows how the policing of urban life and public space by imperial authorities from the sixteenth century onward was explicitly centered on politics of racial exclusion and social control. She illustrates the importance of colonial ideologies in the production of urban space and the centrality of race and racial exclusion as an organizing ideology of urban life in Havana. Beyond the Walled City connects colonial urban practices to contemporary debates on urbanization, the policing of public spaces, and the urban dislocation of black and ethnic populations across the region"--Provided by publisher.
Book Synopsis Beyond the Metropolis by : Louise Young
Download or read book Beyond the Metropolis written by Louise Young and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond the Metropolis, Louise Young looks at the emergence of urbanism in the interwar period, a global moment when the material and ideological structures that constitute “the city” took their characteristic modern shape. In Japan, as elsewhere, cities became the staging ground for wide ranging social, cultural, economic, and political transformations. The rise of social problems, the formation of a consumer marketplace, the proliferation of streetcars and streetcar suburbs, and the cascade of investments in urban development reinvented the city as both socio-spatial form and set of ideas. Young tells this story through the optic of the provincial city, examining four second-tier cities: Sapporo, Kanazawa, Niigata, and Okayama. As prefectural capitals, these cities constituted centers of their respective regions. All four grew at an enormous rate in the interwar decades, much as the metropolitan giants did. In spite of their commonalities, local conditions meant that policies of national development and the vagaries of the business cycle affected individual cities in diverse ways. As their differences reveal, there is no single master narrative of twentieth century modernization. By engaging urban culture beyond the metropolis, this study shows that Japanese modernity was not made in Tokyo and exported to the provinces, but rather co-constituted through the circulation and exchange of people and ideas throughout the country and beyond.
Book Synopsis World Cities Beyond the West by : Josef Gugler
Download or read book World Cities Beyond the West written by Josef Gugler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was the first systematically to cover those cities beyond the core that most clearly can be considered world cities: Bangkok, Cairo, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Mexico City, Moscow, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai, and Singapore. Fourteen leading authorities from diverse backgrounds bring their expertise to bear on these cities across four continents and consider the major regional and global roles they play in economic, political, and cultural life. Conveying how these cities have followed various pathways to their present position, they offer multiple perspectives on the interplay of internal and external forces and demonstrate that any comprehensive discussion of world cities has to engage a multiplicity of perspectives. With an introduction by Josef Gugler and an afterword from Saskia Sassen, this substantial volume makes a major contribution to the world cities literature and provides an important impetus for further analysis.

With unwavering imagination and heart, Janalyn Guo delivers a cast of characters who find their own unusual ways to endure. "These stories take the gestures of new wave fabulism and make it newer and even more wavy, by being genuinely international. Here's a book that shivers with possibility and wonder and surprise, where plants grow from people's bodies, where ghosts exist even before someone is dead. Guo isn't afraid to take on even the thoroughly weird in the most delightful way. This is what it's like to see a genre revivified."--Brian Evenson "OUR COLONY BEYOND THE CITY OF RUINS is an absolute delight, a wild collection that unsettles as much as it entertains. Guo shows an impressive range and deep emotional intelligence--this is a rare book of both strangeness and heart."--Kelly Luce
