Book excerpt: This is a study of the legal and historical role of the warrior who is, first of all a citizen employed in any of a vast number of civilian occupations and professions, and who is, secondarily, a soldier prepared to defend his homeland. The concept is essentially as old as recorded history and as modern as national guards in contemporary nations. Citizen-soldiers constitute a reservoir upon which a nation can draw for defense, for civic action, or for a multitude of other duties. What began as an obligation that all males owed to their sovereigns also developed into a right to keep and bear arms.

Book excerpt: This book examines the Reserve Officers Training Corps program as a distinctively American expression of the social, cultural, and political meanings of military service. Since 1950, ROTC has produced nearly two out of three American active duty officers, yet there has been no comprehensive scholarly look at civilian officer education programs in nearly forty years. While most modern military systems educate and train junior officers at insular academies like West Point, only the United States has relied heavily on the active cooperation of its civilian colleges. Michael Neiberg argues that the creation of officer education programs on civilian campuses emanates from a traditional American belief (which he traces to the colonial period) in the active participation of civilians in military affairs. Although this ideology changed shape through the twentieth century, it never disappeared. During the Cold War military buildup, ROTC came to fill two roles: it provided the military with large numbers of well-educated officers, and it provided the nation with a military comprised of citizen-soldiers. Even during the Vietnam era, officers, university administrators, and most students understood ROTC's dual role. The Vietnam War thus led to reform, not abandonment, of ROTC. Mining diverse sources, including military and university archives, Making Citizen-Soldiers provides an in-depth look at an important, but often overlooked, connection between the civilian and military spheres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Arrived in Bellaire at 3P.M. There is trouble in the neighborhood of Grafton..." Thus begins the extraordinary journals of a modest, humble man. John Beatty (1848-1914) left his work and his home to join the Ohio volunteers in 1861. He began as most do, as a lowly private, but rose through the ranks to become a Brigadier General by 1862. Beatty faithfully recorded his daily life and experiences in what has become one of the best resources for exploring the day-to-day life of a Union soldier during the Civil War. This is so much more than just a recounting of military action. Beatty took note of everything... fellow soldiers, camp routine, military duties, prisoners, slaves, and civilians as well as the battles he participated in. Presented as it was originally published in 1879, The Citizen Soldier is the book of John Beatty's keen observations from June 1861 to January 1, 1864. He also includes a brief recounting of the capture and subsequent escape from Libby Prison of his friend, Colonel Harrison Hobart of the Twenty-First Wisconsin Volunteers.

I am reminded of this by that broth of an Irish lad, Conway, who says, in substance, and with a broad Celtic accent, that their noses have to be sharpened every morning to enable them to pick a living among the rocks.Colonel Marrow informs me that an attack is apprehended to-night. We have sent out strong pickets. The cannon are so placed as to shoot up the road. Our regiment is to form on the left of the turnpike, and the Dutch regiment on the right, in case the secession forces should be bold enough to come down on us.9. Moved from the Middle Fork of the Buckhannon river at seven o'clock this morning, and arrived at Roaring creek at four P. M. We came over the hills with all the pomp and circumstance of glorious war; infantry, cavalry, artillery, and hundreds of army wagons; the whole stretching along the mountain road for miles. The tops of the Alleghanies can now be seen plainly. We are at the foot of Rich mountain, encamped where our brothers of the secRead More

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is filled with wars. We dream the victories and defeats, great and small, and note how they have shaped our world. Wars and social movements have made our civilization as we know it. Man's religion and past wars gives us an understanding of the present. In 1075, a militia loyal to the crown was used against the Norman rebellion. A militia in 1285, and later a Law of Trusts, reorganized the militia. In 1471, with the aid of the militia, towns in Sweden returned to reforms. The University of Uppsala was founded (1477) and printing was introduced. The civic humanist ideal of the militia was spread through Europe by the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli. The militiaman in times of crisis left his civilian duties and became a soldier. When the emergency was over, he returned to his civilian status. Militias continued in England, Italy, Germany, and the United States through the Middle Ages. The first US militia was in Boston. Militias soon followed in the Colonies. Militias were valuable in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Mexican War, and both sides of the Civil War. There was further growth into the 1900's and on into the Present. "Thou art also victory and law When empty terrors overawe." (Wordsworth)
