When cold is applied to certain definite regions of the skin in pigeons, they exhibit retrograde movements alter nating with fits of stupor. The agent, so far, has been rhigolene, to produce the necessary cold. Ether, when vaporized, was totally unable to produce any effect. The region to which the cold must be applied is the skin of the back of the neck. These phenomena were first oh served by Dr. S. Weir Mitchell. I have lately been study ing the effect of irritants on the skin of pigeons, and the seat of the phenomena produced. I found that ether, alcohol, chloroform and nitrite of amyl were powerless to produce the effects seen after the application of rhigolene. If, however, bisulphide of carbon was dropped on the skin of the back of the neck, then all the phenomena produced by rhigolene ensued in a marked manner. Thus a single drop of the bisulphide of carbon applied to the back of the neck of the pigeon caused him to retrograde and to pass into states of quietude. When bisulphide of carbon is applied to the skin of the neck in pigeons, the birds run forward as if no agent was acting on them, but sud denly they commence to run backwards, it being quite evidently against their will, as they seek to overcome the tendency. During the period ot'quietude, the body sinks down somewhat, the head being drawn in close to the body and bent towards the ground to a considerable ex. Tent. That these phenomena are due to a simple irrita tion of the nerves, is proved by an experiment where I attached a small bulldog forceps to the skin on the back of the neck, when similar retrograde movements ensued, followed by a period 01 quietude. As remarked by Dr. Mitchell, these phenomena are re ex in their nature. Here the mechanical irritation of the sensory nerves is re ected94 retrograde and lateral movements with hypnotism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical News, 1880, Vol. 13: Vol. IX, New Series Suppose a person has a perforation in the membrana tym pani, and suppose the action of the atmosphere should irri tate and cause an in ammation of the mucous membrane, wherein lies the danger? As we have already stated, the roof of this cavity consists of a thin septum of bone, which lies in juxtaposition with the membranes of the brain upon one side, and the mucous membrane of the tympanum on the other. An in ammation of the latter membrane may continue until it \destroys or perforates this septum, and then produce meningitis or cerebral abscess with fatal results; or, the in ammation may extend to the mastoid cells and then destroy the septum, the latter being more prolific of cerebral trouble. In some cases, this in amma tory action may continue for months and years without producing anything more than an annoying otorrhoea. The formation of pus is due to a modification and pro liferation of the cellular elements, the amount produced being dependent upon the vascular supply and the degree of stasis. As fast as this proliferation takes place, it is thrown Off in the shape of an otorrhoea. This corrects the false premise referred to in the first part of this arti cle. This process may continue indefinitely, progressing no further than a chronic otorrhoea, and the patient finally be carried off by intercurrent trouble alter the lapse Of years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical News, 1888, Vol. 21 I can give no encouragement to the glittering proposition to deal with this disastrous guest of the blood during his life within the blood-vessels. It is very natural to look to those agents that are known to have a peculiarly destructive effect upon the lower forms of life for aid to put an end to so formidable an affection, in a purely rational manner. It must, however, be berne in mind that the power of a sep tieide depends upon its state of concentration; that is to say that all destroyers of the lower forms of life may be rendered entirely inert by dilution. It matters not how many bacteria are to be dealt with, for an amount of the destroying agent suflicient to kill one animalcule in a given quantity of fluid will kill all, and the whole question of the amount of the antiseptic required depends upon the amount of fluid in which the bacteria float. Let us apply this question to bacteria in the blood. We estimate the amount of blood in a person weighing 160 pounds at 20 pounds. The amount of commercial alcohol required to cause the movements of bacteria to cease in this amount of fluid would be over two and a half pints, which may be considered to be entirely impracticable. The amount of thymol necessary to accomplish the same object would be nearly 140 grains, which amount in the circulation at one time would doubtless destroy the individual. Of carbolic acid it would require at least three ounces regarding which nothing more need be said. So far as is known to-day, there is no agent that can safely be introduced into the cir culation at one time that has the least influence upon bac teria therein. And now what may be considered very important, all clinical experience has demonstrated that the theoretical propositions here advanced are sustained in practice.
