Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Triumphant If the Bible be thus inspired, the Holy Spirit having been the controlling agent in the selection of ideas and the use of material, and the final authority in the choice of words, figures, phrases, and forms used, then a most rigid scrutiny of the (original) text in its symbolism, its construction, and its verbal elements, will surely repay richly for all the labor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Formation and Growth of the Reformed Episcopal Church, 1873-1902 This book is called forth by a strongly-felt need for some gathering together of the various threads of the history of the Reformed Episcopal Church during its twenty-five years and more of existence. Many and able have been the pamphlets and articles written, but no connected account has been recorded. The years are passing, and already some of those who bravely, for con science' sake, faced hardness as soldiers of Jesus Christ, yielded up position, friends, wealth, not counting even their lives dear unto themselves, have joined the Church Triumphant. For this reason, the call came, while many of those earnest laborers were yet with us, for some one to weave into one golden thread, their recollections of our early days, that there might be left in the hands of the workers in years to come a clear and accurate history of the reasons for the founding of our Church, and its for mation and history during its first quarter of a century. Such a book is of necessity largely a compilation, a transcript of the thoughts of others. And many thanks are due to those whose kind assistance and encouragement has made such a work possible. Among them also were some of those valued friends who are to-day rejoicing in the presence of the Lord. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Month of Mary, Conceived Without Sin Every age of the Church is, in a certain sense, more glorious than any of 'the ages which have preceded it. It is true that there have been special ages in which God has magnified the Church more visibly than in others, and has been pleased to illustrate it with peculiar splendor and these Special ages have by no means followed each other in chronological succession. But on the whole, the glory of the Church increases with its age. It be comes more famous by its very vicissitudes. Every trial through which it passes is a fresh illumination of its divine origin and its unearthly character. It grows more honorable by the mere force of time, because of the increased number of dangers which it has surmounted, of hostile predictions which it has belied, and of grand human institutions which it has outlived. Moreover the number of the saints in the Church triumphant multiplies yearly, . And cannot be, according to St. Paul's law of sym pathy, without influence on the Church militant. Thus the past, as it departs, is forever adorning the Church with beautiful monuments and interesting memorials, while the present, as it reinforces the multitudes of heaven, is forever infusing fresh vigor, joy and liberty into the body upon earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Index to the Expositor's Bible We are in the first place, confronted by the fact of the permanent and inextinguishable life of the Bible. N o engrossment of the general mind with secularities, no change in the methods of thought, no discovery of science, and no achievement of literature puts the Bible out of court. It and it alone ministers to the perma nent and universal cravings of our being. Sir Thomas Browne puts it well: Men's works have an age like themselves, and though they outlive their authors, yet have they a stint and period to their duration. This only is a work too hard for the teeth of time, and cannot perish but in the general ames when all things will confess their ashes. The words are as true as when they were written, and they will be as true at any future period, however long this frame of things may last. We will not even quarrel with the thought that the Bible itself will come to be no longer needed, for we shall in the end be content to have no Scripture but the Living Word Himself. Now it is this which sharply distinguishes the Bible from every other book. There are, said one, three classes of books. There is. But in the application of the Prophecies contained under these Seals, Trumpets, and Vials, as well as in. Other parts Of the Apocalypse, we have frequently deviated from the above-named writers, to substitute what we thought a more genuine expli cation. It must then be Observed, that an age and a century must not here be taken for synonymous terms; but by an age in this history we shall understand one Of the seven divisions of time above-mentioned; neither are these divisions of time equal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Churches: Or, the Papacy and the Temporal Power; An Historical and Political Review As it is possible this book may fall into the hands of many but little acquainted with the claim which the Author has upon the attention of the learned in every country, it has been deemed advisable to collect some materials respecting his antecedent biography. The life of an author is to be found in his works; and it will be seen by the subjoined narrative that the years of Dr. Dollinger have been crowded with events; and that each of these reflects honour upon him as a theologian, a scholar, and an historian, as a man of deep research and of original thought. Dr. Dollinger was born at Bamberg, on the 28th February, 1799, and educated at Wurzburg. After several years passed, first at a curacy in Franconia, and as Professor at the Ecclemastical Seminary of Aschaffenberg, he was, in 1826, appointed one of the Faculty of Theology in the new University of Munich. The results of the French Revolution were felt in the youth and early manhood of Dr. Dollinger. Rationalism was everywhere predominant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heavenly Homage: A Sermon Occasioned by the Death of Mrs. Martha Vinal Hooker Recently one' Of the Oldest members of this church was transferred to the church triumphant. Her earthly pilgrimage measured eighty-seven and one half years. I need not say that while she had long been loved and honored for her own sake, she has, during the last twelve years, been all the more tenderly regarded as the widow of Rev. Dr. Henry Brown Hooker, whose praise is in all our churches. This later period was spent amidst untiring assiduities, and the departure was perfectly peaceful. Morning2 came clear and calm, yet not more SO than the scene in that chamber Of quietness. Its win dows look toward the rising sun. Eight months had passed Since she could come below stairs. Her hand was for a good while on the latch Of another door; and at length it opened inward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One-Hundredth Anniversary of the Organization of the First Presbyterian Church, Springfield, Illinois: Sunday, January Twenty-Ninth to Sunday, February Fifth, 1928 This booklet is the product of no one, but rather of a Century of time and an organization of people. Without a splendid tradition, a loyal, and earnest congregation it could never have been written. Indeed, the best of the Centennial Celebration can never be committed to writing. It was rather seen and felt. Not only the church but the city responded to the occasion. The program as outlined elsewhere was car ried through without a hitch. The church was thronged with people not only for the announced public events, but at all hours for the week. Each speaker made a distinct contribution and each event was complete and inspiring. There was no single occurence to mar what was surely a great celebration. But we missed many who could not return. Some had joined the Church Triumphant, and we felt their interest and presence. Others we thought of and heard from; that was no small part of the pleasure of the week. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
