Book Synopsis Who Will Provide? The Changing Role Of Religion In American Social Welfare by : Mary Jo Bane
Download or read book Who Will Provide? The Changing Role Of Religion In American Social Welfare written by Mary Jo Bane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading scholars examine how the church, community organizations, and the government must work together to provide for America's poor in the aftermath of welfare reform. . Who will provide for Americas children, elderly, and working families? Not since the 1930s has our nation faced such fundamental choices over how to care for all its citizens. Now, amid economic prosperity, Americans are asking what government, business, and non-profit organizations can and can’t do and what they should and shouldn’t be asked to do. As both political parties look to faith-based organizations to meet material and spiritual needs, the center of this historic debate is the changing role of religion. These essays combine a fresh perspective and detailed analysis on these pressing issues. They emerge from a three-year Harvard Seminar sponsored by the Center for the Study of Values in Public Life that brought together scholars in public policy, government, religion, sociology, law, education, and non-profit leadership. By putting the present moment in broad historical perspective, these essays offer rich insights into the resources of faith-based organizations, while cautioning against viewing their expanded role as an alternative to the government’s responsibility. In Who Will Provide? community leaders, organizational managers, public officials, and scholars will find careful analysis drawing on a number of fields to aid their work of devising better partnerships of social provision locally and nationally. It was named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book of 2001..

Book Synopsis Faith-Based Organizations and Social Welfare by : Miguel Glatzer
Download or read book Faith-Based Organizations and Social Welfare written by Miguel Glatzer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to understand the role and function of religious-based organizations in strengthening associational life through the provision of social services, thereby legitimizing a new role for faith in the formerly secular public sphere. Specifically, we explore how a church in a postcommunist setting, during periods of economic growth and recession in the wake of transitions to capitalism, and with varied numbers of adherents, might contribute to welfare services in a new political regime with freedom of religion. Put another way, what new pressures would be placed on the secular welfare state if religious organizations (Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, others) simply stopped offering their services? By examining public perceptions of the church, changing dynamics of religiosity, and church-state-civil society relations, the volume places these issues in context.

Book Synopsis Irish Social Policy by : Dukelow, Fiona
Download or read book Irish Social Policy written by Dukelow, Fiona and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first edition of Irish Social Policy was published in 2009, Ireland's enduring economic crisis was only beginning to emerge. In the time since, nearly all areas of Irish social policy have been significantly affected, as policy makers have sought to combat the numerous, multifaceted social challenges posed by Ireland's economic downfall. Retaining the first edition's original structure and the same highly accessible style, this second edition of Irish Social Policy is fully updated and revised to reflect these dramatic shifts. Needs and risks associated with recession and economic precarity have escalated, while social services have simultaneously been forced to cope with significant cutbacks and restructuring. Changes in the landscape of policy making processes and policy drivers are also occurring, as are shifts in the politics and ideas underpinning Ireland's social policy. Particularly timely in light of these ongoing changes, this imperative book offers a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to social policy in the evolving Ireland of today.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy by : Michael L. Coulter
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy written by Michael L. Coulter and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two original volumes of the Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy were published in 2007. Those two volumes included 848 entries from nearly 300 contributors and included a wide range of entries in three general categories: entries exploring Catholic social thought at a theoretical level, entries reflecting the learning of various social science and humanistic disciplines as this learning relates to Catholic social thought, and entries examining specific social policy questions. This third, supplemental volume continues the approach of the original two. First, the volume includes entries that explore Catholic social thought at its broadest, most theoretical level; for example, an entry on Pope Benedict’s important social encyclical Caritas in Veritate. Second, the volume includes entries that discuss recent social science research that bears on issues important to Catholic social thought; for example, an entry on the social costs of pornography draws on recent research on the topic. Third, the volume includes entries discussing specific issues of social policy that have become increasingly important in recent years; for example, an entry on embryo adoption and/or rescue. This third volume contains 202 entirely new entries from over 100 contributors. The contributors include distinguished scholars such as Father Robert John Araujo, S.J. (Loyola University of Chicago), Father Kevin L. Flannery, S.J. (Gregorian University), Robert P. George (Princeton University), William E. May (John Paul Institute and the Culture of Life Foundation), D. Q. McInerny (Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary), and Michael Novak (Ave Maria University). The work will appeal to anyone who is looking for a clear and accurate introduction to Catholic social thought.
Book Synopsis Religion and Social Policy by : Paula D. Nesbitt
Download or read book Religion and Social Policy written by Paula D. Nesbitt and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of religion in creating the rules of society? What should religion's role be? Religion in industrialized countries often appears as a private, personal matter while issues of social justice are worked out in a secular public sphere. But increasingly both policymakers and religious leaders are becoming aware of the role religious values play at the local, national and international levels. Religion and Social Policy explores how religious concerns influence those who shape and those who are shaped by policies. It queries the social teachings of global denominations and local congregations, as well as the implicit religious stances taken by national governments and international NGOs. Broad issues such as religious tolerance, globalization, multiculturalism, gender roles and economic inequality are carefully grounded with practical examples. For students of religion, sociology, politics or public policy, Religion and Social Policy offers an excellent overview of how the sacred and the secular mix in both the theory and practice of creating a just society. Book Synopsis Social Justice and the Churches by : John D'Arcy May
Download or read book Social Justice and the Churches written by John D'Arcy May and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social justice is not just a matter of applying well-known 'first principles' shared by all Christian traditions. As these papers by representatives of seven Australian Churches show, Christian approaches to social justice are star- tlingly distinctive, both in their starting points and in the positions arrived at on urgent matters of human rights, sexual ethics and economic justice. Led off by the well-known Jesuit human rights advocate, Professor Frank Brennan, the book includes contributions by: Fr Max Vodola (Roman Catholic), Revd Gerard Rose (Churches of Christ), Revd Geoff Pound (Baptist), Revd Raymond Cleary (Anglican), Mark Zirnsak (Uniting Church), Major Jenny Begent (Salvation Army) and Fr Shenouda Boutros (Coptic Orthodox Church), with concluding reflections by Margaret Coffey (ABC Radio National). This book is the work of the Yarra Institute for Religion and Social Policy, an independent ecumenical organisation promoting scholarship and research on Christian social traditions as they bear on current concerns. Launched in 2009 by Professor Brian Howe, the Yarra Institute is committed to engag- ing with our broader culture collaboratively to promote human wellbeing. The authors of these chapters come from seven of the Christian traditions which have theological Colleges comprising the University of Divinity in Melbourne.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Edition of Social Policy and Social Change is a timely examination of the field, unique in its inclusion of both a historical analysis of problems and policy and an exploration of how capitalism and the market economy have contributed to them. The New Edition of this seminal text examines issues of discrimination, health care, housing, income, and child welfare and considers the policies that strive to improve them. Book Synopsis Religion, Class Coalitions, and Welfare States by : Kees van Kersbergen
Download or read book Religion, Class Coalitions, and Welfare States written by Kees van Kersbergen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book radically revises established knowledge in comparative welfare state studies and introduces a new perspective on how religion shaped modern social protection systems. The interplay of societal cleavage structures and electoral rules produced the different political class coalitions sustaining the three welfare regimes of the Western world. In countries with proportional electoral systems the absence or presence of state–church conflicts decided whether class remained the dominant source of coalition building or whether a political logic not exclusively based on socio-economic interests (e.g. religion) was introduced into politics, particularly social policy. The political class-coalitions in countries with majoritarian systems, on the other hand, allowed only for the residual-liberal welfare state to emerge, as in the US or the UK. This book also reconsiders the role of Protestantism. Reformed Protestantism substantially delayed and restricted modern social policy. The Lutheran state churches positively contributed to the introduction of social protection programs.
