The burden of repairing the chancel, in the absence of a custom to the contrary, rests of common right on the rector; but so also the parishioners are bound of common right to repair the body of the church;8 but as this confers no right on the parishioners to oust the jurisdiction of the ordinary, so neither does it confer a similar right in the rector. CHAPTER VI.--APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION. No one acquainted with history is likely to deny that the Christian Church, in a condition more or less pure, has existed in the world since the great Pentecost recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and that one generation of Christian ministers has succeeded another since the fishermen of Galilee became "fishers of men." It is no less true that every generation of ministers has, with few exceptions, been formally invested with office by others who held the office before them. It is alike scriptural and becoming, that those about to take upon them the important charge of feeding the flock and of watching for the souls of men, should be duly and publicly set apart to office by those who have authority to do so. The rite of ordination is still maintained in every important section of the Church visible, many thinking it right to conform to the precedent presented in Scripture, and some thinking that without it the continued existence of the Church could not be maintained. It is natural in itself, as well as desirable for other reasons, that those who themselves teach what is right and true should be satisfied that the same sound principles are held by their successors, and that they should communicate to them that public designation and sanction which they themselves derived from their predecessors. But the most solemn appointment derived from human hands does not enable a minister to dispense with that inward call which comes from God. Church officers, whose one object is to perform the duties of their office and to be useful, will not, so far as the manner of appointment is concerned, trouble themselves with more than this, that they have received the inward call, and have been set apart to office in...

And "Rev." M. A. Gault, of the National Reform Association, in the Christian Statesman, Sept. 25, 1884, said: --"This railroad the Chicago and Rock Island has been running excursion trains from Des Moines to Colfax Springs on the Sabbath for some time, and the ministers complain that their members go on these excursions." It is not necessary to add any more statements; they are all in the same line. They all plainly show that the secret and real object of the whole Sunday-law movement is to get the people to go to church. The Sunday train must be stopped, because church-members ride on it, and don't go to church enough. The Sunday paper must be abolished, because the people read it instead of going to church, and because those who read it and go to church too, are not so well prepared to receive the preaching. It was precisely the same way in the fourth century concerning the Sunday circus and theater. The people, even the church-members, would go to these instead of to church; and even if any went to both, it must be confessed that the Roman circus or theater was not a very excellent dish--"What a melange!"--to set down before a man to prepare him for hearing the word of God. The Sunday circus and theater could not afford to keep open unless they could get a great many spectators, and so break up a great many congregations. And as they hurried the spectators fast on to perdition, they had to be shut on Sunday, so as to keep "a great many congregations" out of perdition. It is exceedingly difficult to see how a Sunday circus in the fourth century could hurry to perdition any one who did not attend it; or how a Sunday train in the nineteenth century can hurry to perdition any one who does not ride on it. And...
