Book excerpt: "Military dictators who held Nigeria to ransom for a total of 28 of the 42 years of independence were not only notorious for denying the citizens their fundamental human rights but also for destroying the Nations Educational System. The Catholic Church in Nigeria, represented by the bishops, has to act here as the conscience of the State by means of critique and work for the respect of the fundamental rights of the citizens and the well-being of the human person"--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religion and the Making of Nigeria, Olufemi Vaughan examines how Christian, Muslim, and indigenous religious structures have provided the essential social and ideological frameworks for the construction of contemporary Nigeria. Using a wealth of archival sources and extensive Africanist scholarship, Vaughan traces Nigeria’s social, religious, and political history from the early nineteenth century to the present. During the nineteenth century, the historic Sokoto Jihad in today’s northern Nigeria and the Christian missionary movement in what is now southwestern Nigeria provided the frameworks for ethno-religious divisions in colonial society. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960, Christian-Muslim tensions became manifest in regional and religious conflicts over the expansion of sharia, in fierce competition among political elites for state power, and in the rise of Boko Haram. These tensions are not simply conflicts over religious beliefs, ethnicity, and regionalism; they represent structural imbalances founded on the religious divisions forged under colonial rule.

Book excerpt: The contemporary conflict scenarios are beyond the reach of standardized approaches to conflict resolution. Given the curious datum that culture is implicated in nearly every conflict in the world, culture can also be an important aspect of efforts to transform destructive conflicts into more constructive social processes. Yet, what culture is and how culture matters in conflict scenarios is contested and regrettably unexplored. The Handbook of Research on the Impact of Culture in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding is a critical publication that examines cultural differences in conflict resolution based on various aspects of culture such as morals, traditions, and laws. Highlighting a wide range of topics such as criminal justice, politics, and technological development, this book is essential for educators, social scientists, sociologists, political leaders, government officials, academicians, conflict resolution practitioners, world peace organizations, researchers, and students.

It suggests that Scottish Presbyterian educationalists were usually less at ease with British colonialism than with preparing for a politically independent Nigeria.

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine’s creative and allegorical thought, in his City of God, on social life is one that provides citizens of the earthly cities, especially Christians, an opportunity to understand why and how they should contribute positively to public life through faith and social responsibility. Believing that human life is social, our human social existence must transcend and go beyond social, religious and political affiliations. This requires that individuals be good and upright in their social engagements as religious and political citizens. It also entails individual rights, duties and obligations, without excluding the fight against injustice, social vice, exploitation and power abuse within human society. These sets of values and the positive outcome thereof can only be achieved through love. This love is the driving force to social peace, a love which must promote order and justice within societal life. Irrespective of its heavenly orientation, these teachings are significantly context-bound, like every theological and philosophical endeavour that concerns and connects the human person to its earthly realities. Contextualising these concepts within human existence flows from a social, religious and political assessment. It tends primarily towards moral benefits and social norms that must not lose sight of the spiritual reality, which enlightens and build good moral conscience that impacts virtues and values in society.

Book excerpt: With the prevailing violent conflict situation of our world, perpetuated sometimes even in the name of religion, humanity today faces extinction. To reverse this ugly trend, humanity has no choice than to build a society where every tribe and tongue can coexist in peace. This work analyzed the violent conflicts from anthropological, behavioral, politico-philosophical, and theological perspectives, and makes a demand on humanity to save herself through proper education and dialogue with all men and religions. Lotanna Olisaemeka is a researcher in Missiology affiliated with the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule, Vallendar, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our time the study of law and religion is emerging as a wide-ranging and vital academic discipline, with increasingly urgent implications for society at large. Lying at the intersection of a variety of other disciplines ? law, theology, religious studies, political science, sociology and anthropology, to name only the most obvious ? the field of law and religion is generating a burgeoning volume of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research and study. The current volume is proof of this. The discussion of the relationship between law and religion, as seen from a variety of perspectives in Africa, underscores the critical importance of the issues involved in the everyday life of all citizens. It is accordingly vital for governments to take note of the scholarly results that are produced. We hope that this volume will contribute to this aim.
