Book excerpt: "Much of the inside story of American industry building its first great monopoly and its largest corporation is to be found in the unpublished papers of the key men in the development of the telegraph industry. This wealth of source material is here made the basis of a history of the telegraph in the United States during its first thirty years--from the time when a portrait painter built his canvas stretcher into a crude invention called the "magic wire" to the time when Western Union's great wave of consolidation swept over the last of the independent telegraph companies. The book is primarily an economic history which traces, behind the breathless race of uncoiling wire, the strategy of ledger and lawsuit that carried the American telegraph industry in two decades from a total capitalization of a few thousand dollars to one of more than $40,000,000. It follows the trend toward monopoly from Amos Kendall's original plan for organization of Morse patentees, through Henry O'Rielly's dream of a democratic council, to Hiram Sibley's famous Six Party Contract, and analyzes the delicate negotiations by which the "irrepressible conflict" between Western Union and the American Telegraph Company was resolved. Because the book's emphasis is economic, it has implications beyond the history of a specific industry. It reveals the general pattern of all industry in the United States in the nineteenth century and gives fresh insight into the whole problem of private versus government enterprise."--Dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by Jeremy Moyle When Hegel described the Americas as an inferior continent, he was repeating a contention that inspired one of the most passionate debates of modern times. Originally formulated by the eminent natural scientist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and expanded by the Prussian encyclopedist Cornelius de Pauw, this provocative thesis drew heated responses from politicians, philosophers, publicists, and patriots on both sides of the Atlantic. The ensuing polemic reached its apex in the latter decades of the eighteenth century and is far from extinct today.Translated into English in 1973, The Dispute of the New World is the definitive study of this debate. Antonello Gerbi scrutinizes each contribution to the debate, unravels the complex arguments, and reveals their inner motivations. As the story of the polemic unfolds, moving through many disciplines that include biology, economics, anthropology, theology, geophysics, and poetry, it becomes clear that the subject at issue is nothing less than the totality of the Old World versus the New, and how each viewed the other at a vital turning point in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in 1939, the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) was one of the largest government-sponsored vocational education programs of its time. In To Fill the Skies with Pilots, Dominick A. Pisano explores the successes and failures of the program, from its conception as a hybrid civilian-military mandate in peacetime, through the war years, and into the immediate postwar period. As originally conceived, the CPTP would serve both war-preparedness goals and New Deal economic ends. Using the facilities of colleges, universities, and commercial flying schools, the CPTP was designed to provide a pool of civilian pilots for military service in the event of war. The program also sought to give an economic boost to the light-plane industry and the network of small airports and support services associated with civilian aviation. As Pisano demonstrates, the CPTP's multiple objectives ultimately contributed to its demise. Although the program did train tens of thousands of pilots who later flew during the war (mostly in noncombat missions), military leaders faulted the project for not being more in line with specific recruitment and training needs. After attempting to adjust to these needs, the CPTP then faced a difficult and ultimately unsuccessful transition back to civilian purposes in the postwar era. By charting the history of the CPTP, Pisano sheds new light on the politics of aviation during these pivotal years as well as on civil-military relations and New Deal policy making.
