Book excerpt: John Brinsley (1600-1665), the younger, was a Presbyterian puritan divine who was a powerful Reformed Gospel preacher and writer. This work is a biblical masterpiece on Romans 6:5, "For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection." Brinsley sets into view the Christian's union and communion with, and conformity to, Jesus Christ. He shows that it is a union, communion and conformity applied to the believer in Christ's death and resurrection. Believers are "planted together" with Christ in a mystical implantation; they are converted by faith in Him, have unity in Him, have a blessed communion in Him, while at the same time being nourished, show forth growth, bear fruit, and have sustenance through Christ's Spirit. After establishing the union, communion and conformity believers have in Christ, he teaches how Christ's death and resurrection apply to believers as they are grafted into the life-giving root of the Savior. He covers how believers die to sin, what it means to mortify sin, and how to live in righteousness through the power of the resurrecting Spirit of Christ. Such a resurrection is not only first in this life through regeneration, but also the hope which Christians have in the blessed return of the Savior who will resurrect them ultimately in glory hereafter.

Book excerpt: This work on Practical Religion, which centers on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, was Kettlewell’s first work ever published, and was eminently popular. Its purpose was to take basic Christian doctrine and make it exceptionally practical in the life of a believer. In this work he expanded his sermons into 5 discourses or chapters. The first discourse states the notion of the Christian's salvation, and shows it chiefly to consist in a deliverance from our sins, centered on Matthew 1:21, “Thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.” The second discourse shows that this deliverance, and entire obedience, is neither impossible, nor extremely difficult, if sincere Christians set about it as they should, centered on Phil. 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” The third discourse shows how to form such a purpose of sincere repentance, and entire obedience which will be effectual for this purpose, centered on Acts 11:23, “And exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart, they would cleave unto the Lord.” The fourth discourse shows how to take the truest wisdom of worldly men in their managements, and apply it with admirable use and advantage in the improvement and perfection of holy obedience, centered on Luke 16:8, “For the children of this world are wiser in their generation, than the children of light.” The fifth discourse shows how Christians ought to think about the return of their prayers, or when they may, and when they may not, promise themselves the particular things they ask for, centered on Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask and it shall be given you; for every one that asketh, receiveth.” This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the health of the body can be defined by its functioning parts and systems, the health of the person is more complex. To flourish, we need to understand health in the context of God’s intent. A Theology of Health presents a Christian understanding of the very concept of health, both the health of the body and the health of the person. Preeminent scholar Tyler J. VanderWeele argues that health can be understood as wholeness as intended by God and that sin—whether individual wrongdoing, societal injustice, or the fallenness of creation—causes ill health. VanderWeele explains that restoration and fulfillment of health is salvation, pointed toward in the life of Jesus Christ, to be lived out through the work of the Church, and for which we await final completion. VanderWeele also demonstrates the broader relevance and implications of his insights to all who seek to understand health, well-being, and the ultimate ends of human life. A Theology of Health is an essential theological exploration that seeks to promote health, healing, and flourishing of the whole person.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritually there is a great hunger today for contemplative and more satisfying experiences with God. Puritanism might seem to be an unlikely source for this, yet few groups in the history of Christian spirituality have written more extensively or wisely on the subject. Isaac Ambrose (1604-64), a relatively forgotten English Puritan, developed a theological foundation for the spiritual life based upon the Christian's intimate union with Christ, which the Puritans often called "spiritual marriage." Schwanda demonstrates that this vibrant relationship of union and communion with Jesus, inspired by the Holy Spirit, was manifested in a deep contemplative piety of gazing lovingly and gratefully upon God. At the same time, Ambrose did not neglect loving his neighbors. This study reveals how heavenly meditation was one of the significant practices engaged by Ambrose to cultivate spiritual intimacy and enjoyment of God. Further, his experiential reading of Scripture, in particular the Song of Songs, provided him with a language of ravishment and delight in God. This book provides a distinctively Protestant foundation for recovering the contemplative life while recognizing the significant contributions of the Western Catholic tradition.

Book excerpt: Christianity is not just a set of moral commands. It is not just belonging to a church. It is not just remembering its founder of long ago! It is all of these, but far more, it is a vital relationship with a living and loving God! And it is the Holy Spirit, third Person of the God-head, who makes this happen. "Vinculum amoris" is Latin for "bond of love", which describes the essential activity of the Spirit. Because the Spirit links us to God, he saves us, guides and empowers us. He enlivens our worship, such as in baptism and the Lord's Supper. He stimulates our praying, and gives gifts to deepen the quality of our lives and service to God. Because he links us to God, we are linked to each other in a deeper way. Enriching? yes! And the more that we understand how the Spirit does it, the deeper this enriching will be. The author's prayer is that this book will do just that for God's people and for his Church.

This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Forbes will show you that the house of God should be ordered by God’s rules. In this it should be seen as wholly appropriate that God’s "people" are to be ordered by God’s rules. Such worship should show reverence, piety, love, desire, and joy in God, and it should be structured and ordered according to God’s holy principles. Worship for the Christian should be an expression of God’s heart back to God filtered through his congregation. We ought to reflect back to God how wonderful and most blessed He is in pure and undefiled worship. Mr. Forbes demonstrates from 1 Timothy 6:13-16 that it is impossible to worship God by human invention. It is equally impossible to worship God by human ingenuity. And, it is impossible to worship God in an atmosphere that has not been structured and ordered by God and His word. The Regulative Principle expresses clearly that God alone determines the manner sinners are to approach him in worship. Such a doctrine, such a concept, should not be placed by the way side because we and our contemporary culture are more fascinated and captivated by being entertained rather than by God’s truth. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Fesko reflects on the person and work of the Holy Spirit in the application of Christ's work for the salvation of sinners. Through a combination of biblical, historical, and theological study, Fesko illuminates the blessing of God's presence with his people. Written from a confessionally Reformed perspective in dialogue with the great creeds of the church, The Giver of Life provides a thorough and trustworthy guide to the Holy Spirit's role in salvation.
