The technical phrase is not well chosen: theology, in any proper sense of the word is not connoted by it. It deals with the work of the Christian pastor and the Christian church. Its subject is applied Christianity. It is concerned with the ways and means by which the truth of the Gospel of Christ is brought to bear upon the lives of men, in the administration of the local congregation. It seeks to show the pastor how he may order his own life and the life of his flock so that their joint service may be most effective in extending the Kingdom of God upon earth. It is not wholly a matter of methods and machinery, for the spirit in which the work is done is the main concern; but it is a study of the life of the church as it is manifested in the community where it is planted. The forms of this life greatly vary as civilization changes. New occasions teach new duties. Ethical standards are purified and elevated; the emphasis of the teaching is altered; modes of address, methods of administration that once were effective are no longer practicable; the work of the church must be adapted to the conditions by which it is surrounded.
