Some believe that the focus of Christian mission is evangelizing and 'saving souls'. Others emphasize global justice issues or relief and development work. Is either view correct on its own? John Stott's classic volume, first published forty years ago, presents an enduring view of Christian mission that is just as needed today. Newly updated and expanded by Christopher J. H. Wright, Christian Mission in the Modern World provides a biblically based approach to mission that addresses both spiritual and physical needs. With his trademark clarity and conviction, Stott illuminates how the Great Commission itself not only assumes the proclamation that makes disciples, but also teaches obedience to the Great Commandment of love and service. Wright has expertly updated the original book and demonstrates the continuing relevance of Stott's prescient thinking. This balanced approach to mission encourages current and future Christians to embrace an unconflicted and holistic model of ministry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age IT is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time, says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has re solved itself into a gchaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted With confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter im predicability. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Service and the Modern World These messages have been given to the School of Theology of Southwestern University, the Biblical Institute of Vanderbilt University, the School of Theology at Fayette, Mo., and on other similar occasions. They have been prepared in such time as could be taken from those administrative duties which necessarily limit both adequacy of thought and literary preparedness. These utterances are not set forth as comprehensive of the Gospel message. They are limited to only one or two aspects of that message or to one or two expressions. The author had once preached a sort of trial sermon before the students in the chapel of the Theological Seminary, and was rebuked by one of his fellow-students, who stated that the sermon had not discussed the Atonement and several other cardinal doctrines which he proceeded to name. The answer of the embryo preacher was that he expected to preach several more sermons. The author has, however, in this instance, in previous volumes considered certain primary and constitutional features of Christian faith and experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The publisher of this volume has been anxiously desirous to promote, by such means as his position might place in his power, the habit of reading for direct religious edification. He has believed that, both in the private chamber and in the family circle, especially when any are deprived, wholly or partially, of the privileges of the sanctuary, no other books will quite supply the place of printed sermons; and he has regretted that, in our country, so few volumes of this class are offered to the public. In the hope that the taste of thoughtful persons may not be yet at settled variance with what was formerly esteemed so favourable to the growth of individual and domestic piety, he determined to enter on the publication of several volumes from living preachers of the Church, if their consent could be obtained, and if the first results of the enterprise should not be mere discouragements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Life in the Community Leadership, the management of and participation in great movements, and the kind of service that touches roots and causes, appeal to men and women today. It is significant that no one can make a study of the Church, such as is here presented, without being impressed over and over again that such work, more than anything else, characterizes the essential nature of the Church's life at the present time. This course seeks to enlist men and women in that noble fellowship of service. The call is urgent. Those with the spirit of the Crusaders will not fail to respond. Under the "Suggestions for Study, Investigation, and Practice Work" a Scripture reference is always placed first. These passages are not cited as proof texts. But our inspiration to service comes largely through the Bible, and the suitability of these passages as a background for our thinking will, it is hoped, be apparent. Suggestions to students throughout the course ought to be followed conscientiously. Not one of them has been made except under the conviction that it would be of real help. The aim is to arouse personal interest and induce independent thought and investigation. The study will have failed of its purpose if the students do not get into closer personal touch with the local conditions affecting human welfare and develop a more sympathetic understanding of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the World Today The aim of these studies is to seek in and through the mind and experience of Jesus Christ the way of life for individuals, churches, classes, and nations that shall lead toward a solution of our present problems. We believe that Jesus Christ is the hope of the world; the studies assume this belief and attempt to analyze its implications for the world today. They do not attempt, how ever, to present an economic or political program. We believe that such programs are very definitely the concern of Christians, but intelligent discus sion of programs must follow a clear analysis of our personal share in social wrongs and of the kind of relationships we should try to express in our economic and political life. Just as the preparation of these studies was begun, The Untried Door, by the Reverend Rich ard Roberts, came to us. We read it with a deep sense of agreement and gratitude. We must ex press our indebtedness, also, to the late Walter Rauschenbusch whose Christianity and the Social Crisis translated for us several years ago the hope of the Kingdom into terms of modern life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostle Paul and the Modern World: An Examination of the Teaching of Paul in Its Relation to Some of the Religious Problems of Modern Life On the other hand, a not less Significant transition is to be Observed in the habit of mind now pre vailing in the modern world. Never before, per haps, in Christian history was religion regarded with SO strange a mingling of indifierence and re sponsiveness, of abandonment of dogma and desire for faith, of reaction from formalism and passion for reality, of neutrality toward institutional Christianity and loyalty to Jesus Christ. This temper of the present time has been for the most part expressed in a new attitude toward the person of Jesus, as the Master Of souls rather than the source of dogma, as Claiming Obedience rather than definition, and as welcoming a discipleship not of intellectual conformity but of moral transfor mation. An unembarrassed and spiritual loyalty is, it is now generally agreed, the only type of Christian fellowship which is likely to commend itself to the mind of the modern world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Life OF jesus and christianity. - But history does not stand alone in being unable to refuse the task of giving a scientific account Of the life of Jesus. The execution of the work is imperatively demanded by the Christian religion itself. The great interest which the person Of Jesus, his public ministry, and his fate, possess for Christianity is as clearly as possible shown by this fact, that of all its sacred writings, the four Gospels are unquestionably the best known and the most popular throughout the whole Christian world.1 The early Christian community might have rested satisfied with these four written Sources. It read in them how the life of Jesus was passed and from the fact that the Church handed down these writings from generation to generation as her sacred treasure, it might be regarded as an act of piety to believe in them in the smallest matters as well as in those of great importance without further question. But such an attitude can no longer be taken at the present day, and for these reasons. On the one hand, scholars have diligently applied themselves to the study of the Biblical writings, and more especially the Gospels. On the other hand, we know also, at least with approximate exactness, how it was that the New Testament arose. Thus it is now an established fact that.
