This book was released on 2009-03-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Dale Allison addresses ongoing historical-theological questions concerning Jesus Christ. What should one think of the modern quest for the historical Jesus when there is such enduring discord among the experts, and when personal agendas play such a large role in the reconstructions? How much history is in the Gospels, and how much history does Christian theology require that there be? How does the quest impinge on conventional Christian beliefs, and what might it contribute to contemporary theological reflection? --From publisher's description.

Book Synopsis The Concept of Time and Historical Experience by : Mihai Popa
Download or read book The Concept of Time and Historical Experience written by Mihai Popa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the question: does the event from which we extract historical experience acquire this status at the moment it occurs, or later as it is remembered through the generations? Historical experience is not a concept that facilitates the ascent of the historian to the fact – it is closely related to the fact. This does not make it easier to handle, because the fact itself is retractable; it hides its social (cultural) essence and meaning in time. The present of the historian (narrator) restores, as in an incessant change of perspective, the diachrony of the fact, looking for the present of the past fact. The experience suddenly becomes a relationship between two temporal actualities that seek their own cultural identity. From this perspective, history moves with us. The weight of the conceptualization of a past reality is given by the comprehensive weight (impossibility) of the fact (experience). The work is about the philosophy of history. It is addressed to students, historians, and researchers in the field of the theory of history.

Book Synopsis The Varieties of Historical Experience by : Stephan Palmié
Download or read book The Varieties of Historical Experience written by Stephan Palmié and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers how history is not just objectively lived but subjectively experienced by people in the process of orienting their present toward the past. It analyses affectivity in historical experience, examines the digital mediation of history, and assesses the current politics of competing historical genres. The contributors explore the diverse ways in which the past may be activated and felt in the here and now, juxtaposing the practices of professional historiography with popular modes of engaging the past, from reenactments, filmmaking/viewing and historical fiction to museum collections and visits to historical sites. By examining the divergent forms of historical experience that flourish in the shadow of historicism in the West, this volume demonstrates how, and how widely (socially), the understanding of the past exceeds the expectations and frameworks of professional historicism. It makes the case that historians and the discipline of History could benefit from an ethnographic approach in order to assess the social reception of their practice now, and into a near future increasingly conditioned by digital media and demands for experiential immediacy.
Book Synopsis Jesus Christ in History and Scripture by : Edgar V. McKnight
Download or read book Jesus Christ in History and Scripture written by Edgar V. McKnight and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ in History and Scripture highlights two related bases for the current revolution in Jesus studies: (1) a critically-chastened world view that is satisfied with provisional results and (2) a creative (or "poetic") use of the sources of study of Jesus. The first part of the book shows that "precritical, " "critical, " and "postcritical" epochs and attitudes (all alive today) support different sorts of knowledge concerning Jesus (historical reconstructions; historic memory and appropriations; imaginative, poetic, and artistic creations; and theological formulations) and that the Gospels themselves Support different sorts of knowledge and approaches. The Gospels were composed by Christians who combined historical information and historic memory in imaginative ways to present a Jesus who was relevant to their congregations as he was to the earliest disciples. The creative contribution that readers of the Gospels make in their reconstructions of Jesus is a recapitulation of the creative activities of the earliest evangelists. The central section of the book provides a philosophical rationale for correlating the historical-critical methods of biblical scholars and the rationalist methods of theologians and for correlating these" modern" Enlightenment modes of knowledge with feeling, lived experience, and praxis. It also traces the attempts to do justice to the historical Jesus with particular attention to the different philosophical and theological presuppositions supporting the different attempts. A final section discusses the values of non-foundationlist hermeneutical approaches for the broader questions of the use and authority of the Bible. In the end, ecumenical ratherthan divisive approaches are advocated. Different ways of doing church and different ways of discovering and creating truth demand an ecumenical approach.

Book Synopsis The Ministry of the Word, Vol. 26, No. 03 by : Various Authors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of The Ministry of the Word contains the first eight of the sixteen messages given during the fall 2021 term of the full-time training in Anaheim, California. The general subject of this series of messages is "Chapters Five through Eight of Romans--the Kernel of the Bible." These first eight messages and the subsequent eight messages (published in an upcoming issue) will focus on Romans 5 and 6. This general subject will then be continued in the messages of the spring 2022 term and will focus on Romans 7 and 8. The life and death form two contrasting lines in chapters 5 through 8, showing that man is at the center of a triangular situation between God and Satan, that is, between life and death. The tree of life and the tree of knowledge (the tree of death) issue in two lines--the line of life and the line of death--that run through the entire Bible and consummate in the book of Revelation. The line of life begins with the tree of life in Genesis 2 and issues in the New Jerusalem in Revelation 22 as the city of the water of life with the tree of life, the light of life, and the glory of life. Similarly, the line of death begins with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Genesis 2 and ends with the lake of fire in Revelation 20. The kernel of the Bible is that Christ has been revealed into us as life and that we live, have our being, and exist by Christ as the divine life. God put us into Christ with the desire that we would be transformed and conformed to the image of His Son so that we might be thoroughly one with Christ. In this way we are built up together as the living Body of Christ to contain and express Christ for the Father's glory and for our glorification in Christ. Romans 5 reveals that the result of our justification is the full enjoyment of God in Christ as our life.
Book Synopsis Philosophising Experiences and Vision of the Female Body, Mind, and Soul: Historical Context and Contemporary Theory by : Musingafi, Maxwell Constantine Chando
Download or read book Philosophising Experiences and Vision of the Female Body, Mind, and Soul: Historical Context and Contemporary Theory written by Musingafi, Maxwell Constantine Chando and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of the world, our societies, and ourselves rests on theories and knowledge generated predominantly by men of certain nationalities and economic classes. This male-dominated and culturally specific theorizing and knowledge have generally resulted in the exclusion of women and other groups from the process of formal theorizing and knowledge building. Feminism argues that the male-dominated knowledge represents a skewed perception of reality and is only partial knowledge. Feminism is a generalized, wide-ranging system of ideas about social life and human experience developed from a woman-centered perspective. It treats women as the central subjects in the investigative process and seeks to see the world from the distinctive vantage points of women in the social world. The best way to empower women and better the situation for women is to take women’s daily experiences and their informal theorizing into account and, on this basis, adopt feminist approaches to building theory and knowledge. Philosophising Experiences and Vision of the Female Body, Mind, and Soul: Historical Context and Contemporary Theory provides an overview and introduction to the study of feminist theory and practice in the social sciences. This book provides a starting point for further and more advanced study of the nexus of feminism, gender, and development and translates feminist theory and concepts into practice. The chapters investigate, in a historical context, mainstream and contemporary theories of feminism and gender studies. This book is ideal for post-graduate students of social science; researchers of development management, business management, public governance, and gender and development; activists; feminists; and practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in feminist theory and knowledge building.

Book Synopsis The Color of Christ by : Edward J. Blum
Download or read book The Color of Christ written by Edward J. Blum and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that in America the image of Jesus Christ has been used both to justify the atrocities of white supremacy and to inspire the righteousness of civil rights crusades? In The Color of Christ, Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey weave a tapestry of American dreams and visions--from witch hunts to web pages, Harlem to Hollywood, slave cabins to South Park, Mormon revelations to Indian reservations--to show how Americans remade the Son of God visually time and again into a sacred symbol of their greatest aspirations, deepest terrors, and mightiest strivings for racial power and justice. The Color of Christ uncovers how, in a country founded by Puritans who destroyed depictions of Jesus, Americans came to believe in the whiteness of Christ. Some envisioned a white Christ who would sanctify the exploitation of Native Americans and African Americans and bless imperial expansion. Many others gazed at a messiah, not necessarily white, who was willing and able to confront white supremacy. The color of Christ still symbolizes America's most combustible divisions, revealing the power and malleability of race and religion from colonial times to the presidency of Barack Obama.
