Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A READY lexicon of interest to students and scholars of Indian languages. The work is the most comprehensive and exhaustive study of the Chinook jargon in existence to-day, comprising a complete grammar and dictionary, with nearly three thousand specimens of colloquial and narrative phrases, with English translations, etc. It is intended to afford a complete lexicon for the use of students and scholars, as well as an attractive and characteristic souvenir of the Alaskan-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. The Chinook jargon is the prevailing medium of intercourse between the whites and the natives, and is spoken by about thirty thousand people in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, and in some parts of Alaska. It is one of the most curious specimens of a "mixed language" which philologists have had the opportunity of analyzing, and has been termed a genuine “international speech,” which “may well serve, if not as a model, at least as a finger-post to direct us to some higher invention for sub-serving the larger uses of an advanced civilization.” —Publishers Weekly, Volume 75, [1909]

Not illustrated. 1909 Excerpt: ...Example: Mamook tamahnous, --to conjure; "make medicine." Masahchie tamahnous, --witchcraft or necromancy. Mr. Anderson restricts the true meaning of the word to conjuring. Halo yaka mitlite tamahnous, --he has no guardian spirit. "'Klale Tah-mah-na-wis, ' the name of the secret society of black magic."--Phillips. "There were four kinds of tamahu-a-wis, sometimes spelled ta-mahno-us, or spirit practices in vogue among the Twanas as there were among the great family of Selish Indians in Washington. The word ta-mahn-a-wis may be and was used in the sense of a noun, an adjective or a verb. As, a noun it means any kind of a spirit in the spirit world from the Sahg-ha-lie Tyoe, or supreme being, to the klail ta-mahn-awis, or devil, literally, black spirit. As an adjective a ta-mahn-a-wis stick, stone, person, etc., is a thing or individual with a ta-mahn-a-wis or spirit either of good or evil in it. As a verb It Is used in the sense of invoking the aid of spirits, as 'mah-mok ta-mahn-awis.' The four kinds of ta-mahn-a-wis of the Indians of the Twana tribe at least are: The ta-mahn-a-wis over the side, ' the incantations of the medicine men; the 'red ta-mahn-a-wis, ' the 'black ta-mahna-wis, ' and the 'spirit land tamahn-a-wis.' The sick ta-mahn-a-wis was only practiced for the healing of the sick. The red, or pill ta-mahn-a-wis, was an assembling together, an invocation, in short, of the spirits for a good season the following summer. It lasted three or four days and consisted of singing, dancing, the beating of tom-toms, drums and the decoration of the face and limbs and body invariably with streaks and spots of red paint. The black, or klail ta-mahn-a-wis, was the free masonry of the Twanas and was without doubt the one great religion of all ...

Book excerpt: Skookum, cultus, hyack, saltchuck, klahowya, tillicum: It is in words like these that the last vestiges of a lost British Columbian language remain. It was known as Chinook. Its use today is mainly confined to colloquialisms, and place names like Boston Bar, Canim Lake, Illahee Mountain, Snass Creek, and Skookumchuck. It began as a trading jargon, but it soon evolved into a distinct West Coast tongue. Down through the years, as many as a quarter of a million people relied on it. Chinook was an everyday necessity.A Voice Great Within Us consists of an introductory essay by Glavin exploring the development and spread of Chinook throughout the West Coast, and the place it continues to have in our history; the Chinook poem, Rain Language; Lillard's own essay on the part that Chinook played in his own life and exploration of British Columbia. In addition, A Voice Great Within Us includes a lexicon containing hundreds of Chinook words and expressions and a map and gazetteer of British Columbia, showing eighty Chinook place names in this province.A Voice Great Within Us is Number 7 in the Transmontanus series of books edited by Terry Glavin.

Book excerpt: The moment of contact between two peoples, two alien societies, marks the opening of an epoch and the joining of histories. What if it had happened differently? The stories that indigenous peoples and Europeans tell about their first encounters with one another are enormously valuable historical records, but their relevance extends beyond the past. Settler populations and indigenous peoples the world over are engaged in negotiations over legitimacy, power, and rights. These struggles cannot be dissociated from written and oral accounts of "contact" moments, which not only shape our collective sense of history but also guide our understanding of current events. For all their importance, contact stories have not been systematically or critically evaluated as a genre. Myth and Memory explores the narratives of indigenous and newcomer populations from New Zealand and across North America, from the Lost Colony of Roanoke on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States to the Pacific Northwest and as far as Sitka, Alaska. It illustrates how indigenous and explorer accounts of the same meetings reflect fundamentally different systems of thought, and focuses on the cultural misunderstandings embedded in these stories. The contributors discuss the contemporary relevance, production, and performance of Aboriginal and European contact narratives, and introduce new tools for interpreting the genre. They argue that we are still in the contact zone, striving to understand the meaning of contact and the relationship between indigenous and settler populations.
