Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: First Reader The american school first reader is planned as the children's second reading book. It assumes that they can read the usual vocabulary of a good primer, either of this series or of any other. It is, however, closely related to the American School Primer. The children and their pets, whose acquaintance was made in that book, appear again here, with new experiences, in the earlier pages. But the keynote of the book is children's lore. The characters of the primer appear less and less frequently and finally drop out altogether. The latter part of the book contains children's literature only. The authors believe that this literature is of so excel lent a quality that it will intensify the interest of chil dren in the reading book, and hence in learning to read, and will also implant the seeds of good literary taste. Carefully organized lists of words for phonic drill are given on pages 135 - 137. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is a significant, as well as a beautiful fact, that our poets have been so noble and true that we are glad to have the children learn of them. They have manifested, too, such a love of innocence and childhood in their home lives, that the little ones who never have had the privilege of looking into their faces may yet understand this beautiful relationship, and so, being drawn closer to their lives, appreciate and love their poems. In introducing the poets Longfellow and Whittier into the following pages the author has not undertaken any comprehensive account of their lives; but the purpose has been to picture them to the children in such a way as to make them real personages, and also to lead up to such of their poems as appeal to the little ones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Classics First Reader Children come to a First Reader after the Primer know ing a few hundred common words, and able to make out, by phonic analysis, some new words of simple form. That is, they have read a little, and acquired the power to read a little more. The problem of the First Reader is to stimulate in the children further interest, to increase their list of known words, and their command of the phonic elements, to quicken their pace and strengthen their confidence in their reading, and so enlarge their powers and add to their pleasure. For this, as for the other books of the series, the editors have chosen, from the established children's classics, prose and verse which all are expected to know. Much use is made of stories of the repetitive type. Not only do chil dren like the repeated form, but they get from it the most pleasing and effective kind of drill, and a stimulating sense of achievement. The poetry, the fables, and the other stories present ideas that are simple and congenial to young minds. New words are introduced very slowly at first, and are systematically repeated. Sure and immediate control of words is the right foundation for reading. In the illustrations the artists have not only helped to interpret the literature, but they have satisfied the sense of beauty and the sense of humor. Except for the word list at the end of the book, all teaching apparatus, helps and suggestions for the teacher, are excluded. These are given in the Manual written to accompany the text. He sat where the arbor cast a pleasant shade, and he could smell the fragrance of the flowers that he himself had planted. At times, he would forget his book while listening to the music of the birds, or gazing at the peonies and tulips, but he would soon think again of his lesson, and commence studying with new zeal. He was to recite in an hour, so he had wisely chosen a comfortable place, and bravely resolved to -conquer his lesson as soon as possible. All at once the yellow cat, which had been watching on the wall, sprang at a beautiful red bird and tumbled down with it at Henry's feet. He started and caught. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's First Book of Poetry We hear much nowadays about the decline of poetry. No one reads poetry any more. Poets cannot make a living. The world has ceased to express its ideals in verse. The novel and the short story, rather than the epic or the lyric, furnish our instruction and our inspiration. The magazine and the newspaper are our substitute for a library; and these print verses only to fill out a column or a page. In short, we are living in a reflective, a scientific, a prose age. So we are told. Like most generalizations about the complex phenomena of modern life, this is only partially true. Every year brings new volumes of dramatic, narrative, and lyric poetry of high merit. Yeats, Synge, and Phillips; Noyes, Masefield, and Gibson; - these and scores of other names come to mind to prove that the gift of song has not fled the earth. Nor are the old poets forgotten. Do you wonder why the books were given this name This is the reason: children all over the United States helped in the making of these books. Thousands of children let the authors know what questions they would like best to have answered. After the questions were answered in story form, they were printed in a book, together with other interesting selections. Then children from the North, from the South, from the East, and from the West read the books and decided which stories they liked best and which they liked least. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story Hour Readers Revised: Book Two During the last few years, the teaching Of reading has been exhaustively studied from many angles, and the current trend towards simplification of material in the early grades is very marked. The Story Hour Readers Revised are in harmony with these recent tendencies. They attack the easiest problems first, employ a simple though relatively extensive vocabulary, and secure the children's interest through variety of content. In Second Year First Half of the revised series, the method used in the earlier books is adapted to the teaching problems of this grade. The child's phonetic power is developed in dealing with new words; dramatiza tion and oral reproduction continue to be important features Of the language work; and silent reading, begun in First Year Second Half, is here extended to the observation and discrimination of thought groups. Content. The material used in the Revised Second Year First Half has a wide range of interest, including simple legendary and historical narratives as well as folk tales and fanciful stories. Mechanical features. This book preserves in the earlier stories the phrase grouping which was a feature ofthe Primer and Book One, but the lines throughout have been skillfully kept to normal length. Through this ar rangement the child derives from the phrase grouping the assistance which he requires, and at the same time becomes accustomed to a normal page of type. After the first four stories the rigid phrase grouping is step by step abandoned. An important mechanical aid in the use of the book for Silent reading is supplied by the blank lines that mark the divisions of all thought groups which do not end with the page.
